The 4-part Skull Island: The Birth of Kong comic book series has provided fans of the new MonsterVerse more insight into the backstory of Kong. Part 2 of the series hit stores and Comixology yesterday.
Skull Island: The Birth of Kong takes place twenty years after the events of the film, the story gives a more in depth look at the origin of Kong, Skullcrawlers, and new monsters. It also shows how Kong grew into a larger and more dangerous monster who is worshipped by the Iwi natives. The first issue was intense and faced paced, which saw the team being attacked from all the different monsters on the island. The second issue is more methodical and reveals key details about the native tribe that lives on the island, the Iwi, and the origins of Kong became the last of his kind.

Although pitting gargantuan monsters against each other on film is nothing new, you have to tip your hat to The Avengers for the positive effect it had on modern American cinema. It seems like everyone is now getting in on the shared universe concept and, if you love Kaiju, it’s certainly an exciting time to be alive. With Kong: Skull Island now behind us, our attention turns toward 2019’s Godzilla sequel (fingers crossed for a Jet Jaguar appearance) and 2020’s Godzilla vs. Kong, which we’re guessing will be bereft of “Martha.”
But before those arrive, Legendary Comics intend to further flesh out the MonsterVerse with the four-issue limited series, Skull Island: The Birth of Kong, which is set to delve further into the mystery of the island itself as well as showing how Kong became king. I’m well aware that I just made it sound like a taut political thriller,...
