Martin Scorsese followed up his three-and-a-half-hour epic “Killers of the Flower Moon” with a 30-second commercial. The Super Bowl spot, an ad for website builder Squarespace, stars the director as he gets stuck in traffic during an alien invasion.
As extraterrestrials descend upon the Earth in giant UFOs, everyone is too busy staring at their screens to even notice. One woman scrolls past a video captioned “Proof of Extraterrestrials” to a clip of a cat unraveling toilet paper, as she smiles while a UFO hovers overhead. A dog barks at the sky while its owners are glued to their phones eating a meal. A flying saucer visits a corporate board meeting, but the employees are too tapped into their laptops to realize.
The aliens catch people’s attention when they hijack their screens with a website titled “Hello Down There,” which prompts everyone to finally look up. That includes Scorsese,...

Martin Scorsese’s directorial debut for the Super Bowl has arrived.
In the cinematic Squarespace ad titled “Hello Down There,” released on Wednesday, the auteur tackles society’s excessive consumption of technology with a sci-fi twist. Extraterrestrials have arrived to Earth, but people are too glued to their devices to realize there’s an UFO flying above them. To get humans’ attention, the aliens create a website with the help of Squarespace.
The filmmaker makes a cameo at the end, as he finds himself trapped in traffic during the alien invasion. “I told you to take Broadway. This always happens!,” he tells his driver.
The tagline for the Squarespace Super Bowl campaign is then revealed onscreen: “A website makes it real.”
The commercial was primarily filmed in New York City, which is both home base to Squarespace and Scorsese.
“At my age, it’s a stretch finding a directorial debut.

As you may have heard, the 2023 San Diego Comic-Con International was not the usual Sdcc experience.
On July 14, the American actors’ union SAG-AFTRA joined their writing counterparts in the WGA by going on strike and picketing the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP) for its refusal to grant them a fair deal. Since the details of the strike preclude actors and writers from promoting their union-backed films and TV shows, many of the planned panels, promotions, and guests at Comic-Con had to bow out.
The end result was a Con that very much resembled the event’s earlier days before it became a action item on the calendar for big studios like Marvel, DC, and others to showcase their upcoming blockbusters. And you know what? It was all still pretty cool!

New Delhi, June 29 (Ians) Three years after retiring from tennis, 2018 Australian Open champion Caroline Wozniacki on Thursday announced that she will make her return to tour this summer.
Former World No.1 Wozniacki — the first player from Denmark to win a major — retired in January 2020 after a third-round loss in Melbourne. A diagnosis of debilitating rheumatoid arthritis was a factor in her decision.
Wozniacki, a mother of two who turns 33 in a few weeks, and husband David Lee, a former NBA player, are parents to 2-year-old Olivia and 8-month-old James. Since last year, Wozniacki has served as an analyst as well.
Wozniacki plans to start playing in Montreal to regain her form. She and her team will then move to New York. After this, she has set aside two months to prepare for the Australian Open. She has left her plans open after that but notably mentioned the Paris Olympics as a key goal.

Ahead of the 2021 Oscars, the academy combined their Best Sound Editing and Best Sound Mixing categories into one. The films vying for the third annual Best Sound prize are “All Quiet on the Western Front,” “Avatar: The Way of Water,” “The Batman,” “Elvis,” and “Top Gun: Maverick.” Our current odds indicate that “Top Gun: Maverick” (16/5) will be victorious, followed in order of likelihood by “All Quiet on the Western Front” (19/5), “Avatar: The Way of Water” (9/2), “Elvis” (9/2), and “The Batman” (9/2).
The 23 craftspeople included in the current lineup have collectively amassed a whopping 72 previous nominations and 16 wins for their sound work. The one responsible for the largest chunk is Andy Nelson, whose dual bids for “The Batman” and “Elvis” bring him to a record-fortifying career total of 24. To many people – and that includes many academy members – there might be something esoteric about the Best Sound category at the Oscars. And yet it might be one of the most important technical crafts involved with filmmaking. If you don’t understand what the actors are saying, then it’s harder to connect with them or what the filmmaker was trying to achieve. A movie’s score and sound effects also need to be properly recorded and balanced to make any film as much a sonic experience as a visual one.
There are also useful precursors for the category, such as the Cinema Audio Society Awards and the Motion Picture Sound Editors’ Golden Reel Awards, which give a clearer picture of which of the five Oscar nominees are considered the best by their direct peers.
As with some of the other below-the-line crafts categories, this doesn’t always have a direct correlation with Best Picture,...

Kochi, March 6 (Ians) Olympic Champion and Bengaluru Torpedoes Head Coach David Lee has admitted that his team was a “little bit apprehensive” in the finals of Prime Volleyball League (Pvl) against Ahmedabad Defenders here at the Regional Sports Centre.
Ahmedabad Defenders clinched the trophy in the second season of Pvl with a 15-7, 15-10, 18-20, 13-15, 15-10 win over the Bengaluru Torpedoes on Sunday. It was Ahmedabad’s second consecutive final, having lost the first one against Kolkata Thunderbolts last season.
The Bengaluru Torpedoes Head Coach feels Ahmedabad Defenders had an edge over his side because the team from Gujarat was playing its second final.
“Experience of playing the final gives an edge, my guys were little bit apprehensive, a little bit scared at times and that was little bit apprehensive at times in the finals,” David Lee told Ians.

Although legendary musician Elvis Presley has been portrayed on screen numerous times in the 45 years since his death, his full life story had never been given the theatrical film treatment until the recent release of Baz Luhrmann’s “Elvis.” This artistically bold yet intimately honest depiction of the rock and roll icon’s ever-evolving relationship with his fame is now nominated for eight Academy Awards, including Best Picture. Following the losses of films such as “Ray” (about Ray Charles) and “Bohemian Rhapsody” (Freddie Mercury), it would make history as the first singer biopic to conquer the top Oscar category.

Kochi, March 3 (Ians) Defending Champions Kolkata Thunderbolts were stunned by Bengaluru Torpedoes with a score line of 15-10, 10-15, 15-13, 15-10 in the first semi-final of the second season of the Prime Volleyball League (Pvl) at the Regional Sports Centre, here on Friday.
Bengaluru went big right from the word go but handed over a couple of early freebies to the defending champions. On one hand skipper Ashwal Rai continued his sensational form for the Thunderbolts with his superb performance, Ibin Jose started making an impact for the Torpedoes.
The neck-and-neck battle saw the Torpedoes move an inch ahead with Tsvetelin Tsvetanov and skipper Pankaj Sharma’s attacks. Janshad kept setting up Ashwal to keep the Thunderbolts closer to the opposition. But Pankaj’s dominant show from the service line troubled Kolkata’s defence and Bengaluru took control.
Rahul put a block on Pankaj and made a thunderous super serve to make his presence felt.

Cheers is streaming in its entirety on Peacock and Paramount+, and a few seasons are still on Hulu. 11 seasons gives you 273 total episodes to watch, but let’s say you’ve already watched them all. At under 30 minutes each, it would only take you 136 hours, so less than a week if you don’t sleep. Anyway, here are five other shows you might like if you also like Cheers.

All Quiet on the Western Front made good on its record number of BAFTA nominations with a major haul of wins at the film awards ceremony on Sunday night.
At London’s Royal Festival Hall, Netflix’s German anti-war epic took the BAFTAs for best film, alongside best adapted screenplay and best director, and hoovered up most of the craft honors for a total of seven gongs (a BAFTA record for a film not in the English language).
Away from the Western Front, Martin McDonagh’s The Banshees of Inisherin won four awards, including half the performance honors, with Kerry Condon and Barry Keoghan landing supporting wins. Elsewhere, Austin Butler won leading actor for Elvis, and Cate Blanchett leading actress for Tar.

Austin Butler’s agent told him he would need to gain weight to play the older version of Elvis Presley in Baz Luhrmann’s “Elvis.” “I heard that Ryan Gosling when he was going to do ‘The Lovely Bones,’ had microwaved Häagen-Dazs and would drink it,” Butler tells Variety. “So I started doing that. I would go get two dozen doughnuts and eat them all. I really started to pack on some pounds. It’s fun for a week, and then you feel awful about yourself. But we were planning on shooting chronologically in the beginning. That quickly went out the window with Covid. It was just impossible.”
On this week’s episode of the Variety Awards Circuit Podcast, Butler sits down to discuss receiving his first Oscar nomination for best actor. He also discusses renting an apartment after the Warner Bros. corporate cards were shut off following the Covid shutdown.

The motion picture academy made it a little easier in 2021 to predict the winners by combining Best Sound Mixing and Best Sound Editing into one category: Best Sound. Both sound mixers and sound editors are recognized in the combined category. Up to six statuettes will be awarded to one production sound mixer, two supervising sound editors and three re-recording mixers. The inaugural winner of Best Sound was, appropriately enough “Sound of Metal.” Last year, this prize went to “Dune.”
The sound branch determines the nominees in two stages. First, members of the branch cast preferential ballots with the top 10 vote-getters, announced on December 21, moving on to the second stage. Members who attend screenings of excerpts from these 10 semi-finalists or attest that they have seen them cast preferential ballots and the top five films are nominated.
It can be difficult to differentiate the sound mixing of a film from the sound editing.

In the season of the spectacle, the Oscar craft nominations were pretty evenly split, led by “Elvis” and the late-surging “All Quiet on the Western Front” with six. Next in line with four nominations were “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever,” “Everything Everywhere All at Once,” and “Top Gun: Maverick.” Topping out at three nominations each were “Avatar: The Way of Water,” “Babylon,” and “The Batman.” “The Banshees of Inisherin,” “The Fabelmans,” and “TÁR” were nominated for two craft awards apiece. And “Bardo, False Chronicle of a Handful of Truths” and “Empire of Light” scored lone cinematography nominations for Darius Khondji (his second) and Roger Deakins (his 16th).
This was definitely the result of an unusually competitive field containing three sequels, a DC reboot (“The Batman”), a World War I actioner (“All Quiet”), a multiverse adventure (“Everything Everywhere”), an epic Hollywood comedy-drama (“Babylon”), and a musical biopic extravaganza (“Elvis”). “The big thing about working with Baz is that you know it’s not going to be a straight narrative,” says Wayne Pashley, sound designer and supervising sound editor for Baz Luhrmann‘s film “Elvis.” “I’ve worked with Baz for 30 years now. He tends to shoot conventionally, surprisingly enough, but a lot of the magic happens in post.” Pashley is joined by production sound mixer David Lee and re-recording mixers Andy Nelson and Michael Keller in our video interview above.
