The New Pornographers are gearing up to share their new album Continue as a Guest on March 31st, and they’ve shared another preview of what’s to come today with the single “Angelcover.”
Driven by an uptempo beat and suspenseful instrumentals, “Angelcover” finds vocalist A.C. Newman wrestling with perfectionism and the challenges of conveying your emotions through a creative medium: “Angels on the edge of my bed, been there half of the night/ Looked around, asked ‘You made this hell yourself? Well it’s real nice,'” goes the track’s tongue-in-cheek first lines.
“I pictured this one as a weird little George Saunders-esque sketch, a snapshot,” Newman said in a press release. “I found myself a lot more concerned with performance and/or delivery, changing melody and phrasing to get a better performance, less concerned, less precious about the original melody or lyric that I wrote.”
Newman continues: “With that in mind,...

Canadian indie rock vets the New Pornographers unveiled a new song, “The Surprise Knock,” off their upcoming album, In the Morse Code of Brake Lights, out September 27th via Collected Work/Concord Records.
The track boasts a ramshackle energy as the drums skip with a heavy thump and the relentless rush of guitars is balanced by a line of choral “ahh”’s that ping-pong across the mix. “Drive off the map ‘til the horizon bleeds,” A.C. Newman sings, before Neko Case helps him complete the line in perfect harmony, “Didn’t need a war,...

As the year winds to a close, Soundtracking looks back at the ten best moments, songs and trends that made 2014 a great year for music on screen.
10. Guardians of the Galaxy
It’s the only way to kick off this list. If the 21st Century truly believed in cassettes, most copies of this soundtrack would be worn out by now. The first ever back catalogue-only soundtrack to hit Number One on the Billboard charts, Awesome Mix Vol. 1 was a masterpiece in Am Radio curation. But you already knew that. Cue the Star-Lord strut:
9. The F Word
Michael Dowse’s rom-com wins the Canadiana Award for 2014 thanks in large part to an original score by New Pornographers founder A.C. Newman and a dappling of Patrick Watson throughout the film. Ironically, the most memorable track from the film comes courtesy of southern duo The Parting Gifts.

Every week, members of the Vulture staff will highlight their favorite new songs. They might be loud, quiet, long, short, danc-y, rawkin', hip, square, rap, punk, jazz, some sort of jazz-punk-rap fusion — whatever works for the given person in that given week. Read our picks below and please tell us yours in the comments. Enjoy!Gilbert Cruz (@GilbertCruz): The New Pornographers, “Brill Bruisers” Normally, if I heard a song that started with the lines, “Bo ba, bo ba ba bo, Bo ba, bo ba ba,” I would run far, far away on the chance that it was about to go into full a capella mode. But this is the first track from the New Pornographers' upcoming album, Brill Bruisers, and there are few things I want more in this world than more songs from A.C. Newman and Co. It may have gotten lost in all the meeting-the-mother mythology, catchphrases, slaps and recurring gags, but How I Met Your Mother was an incredibly musically-minded sitcom. Look no farther than its stupidly catchy theme song, a 12-second excerpt of "Hey Beautiful," written and performed by the Solids a.k.a. the band of Himym creators Carter Bays and Craig Thomas. Not only did the show feature a bevy of pop stars — Britney Spears, Jennifer Lopez, Katy Perry, Enrique Iglesias, to name a few — the show had some truly catchy original tunes,...

CBS’ How I Met Your Mother is as synonymous with music as it is with questions about Ted’s future wife.
From Robin Sparkles to “You Just Got Slapped,” the show has served up plenty of its own original songs. But it’s also made smart, clever use of popular tunes to create many unforgettable, emotional scenes.

The members of The New Pornographers are a busy bunch, yet the group hasn’t put out an album together since 2010’s, uh, Together. Since then, of course, Dan Bejar’s Destroyer released Kaputt in 2011, and Kathryn Calder put out Bright And Vivid that year as well. A.C. Newman’s Shut Down the Streets came out last year, and Neko Case has a new album, The Worse Things Get, the Harder I Fight, the More I Love You, due this September. But in a recent interview with Billboard, Case revealed that the New Pornos crew is back ...

It's been a strange week for Stars singer Torquil Campbell. On Monday he realized the group would be scheduled at this year's Ottawa Blues Fest at the same time Icelandic singer Bjork was performing.
Tuesday morning was spent consoling bassist Evan Cranley on the Toronto Maple Leafs unprecedented playoff collapse to the Boston Bruins.
This morning Campbell is railing against the provincial election results in British Columbia, even creating his own "movingtoamerica" hashtag in protest while stating the country "is going to shit."
Yesterday the singer tweeted the following: "saying a prayer today for the end of the corrupt, incompetent campbell/clark dynasty in my beloved BC today. let's lose the losers people!"
After results yesterday showed the Liberals winning a majority, but Liberal leader Christy Clark losing her own seat, Campbell paraphrased the late writer and journalist H.L. Mencken by saying "nobody ever went broke underestimating the stupidity of the british columbian public.

The Hood Internet -- Aaron Brink, or Abx, and Steve Reidell, or Stv Slv -- have spent the better part of the last five years creating unlikely mashups of artists like Rick Ross and Wilco. The Chicago duo's music has long been a staple at parties where the beer might not be the coldest and the attendees look comfortable in vintage denim jackets.
But on Feat, a forthcoming project on Decon, The Hood Internet graduates to all-new, sample-free production. And they've recruited plenty of friends: A.C. Newman (of The New Pornographers), Tobaxxo, Psalm One, Class Actrees, Show You Suck and many more make appearances on the album.
Feat is interesting because though it's sonically quite diverse, the entire album has a decidedly Hood Internet-feel to it. Maybe that's because they spent so long playing with pastiche, drawing from the catalogues of artists who were cool for being retro (say, Genesis,...

Cult rockers The New Pornographers have been forced to scrap a college gig in Michigan - because of their name. The group, fronted by acclaimed singer/songwriter A.C. Newman, was scheduled to perform at Calvin College on October 15 but the school's Christian officials have vetoed the gig.
A statement from the college reads, "After weeks of discussion and consideration, the irony of the band's name was impossible to explain to many. The band's name, to some, is mistakenly associated with pornography. Consequently, Calvin, to some, was mistakenly associated with pornography. Neither the college nor the band endorses pornography."
Calvin student activities director Ken Heffner, who books concerts for the college, said the cancellation is a "peaceful parting of ways" between the school and the band. Refunds for those who have bought the tickets would be issued starting Tuesday, September 14.

Margaret Cho lost her voice over the weekend and is very sweetly describing her new and first comedy music hybrid album “Cho Dependent.” She gushes on the “warmth and love” there was between her and her famous collaborators like Andrew Bird, Fiona Apple, Jon Brion, Tegan and Sara, Ani Difranco and the New Pornographers’ A.C. Newman, who worked on music to her lyrics. It’s fielding a balance, she said, between being known as a comedian but have great standards for a musical output. On Jaill’s Sub Pop debut That’s How We Burn, Milwaukee’s preeminent slacker-rock band combs its hair, puts on a clean shirt, and remakes itself as a sleek, savvy engineer of guitar-pop should-be hits. Tightening up the casual, stoner-guy approach taken on previous releases—even transforming the tossed-off 5-year-old song “Everyone’s Hip” into a jumpy new-wave jam that A.C. Newman might want to consider plagiarizing—Jaill has built That’s How We Burn on a solid foundation of sinewy hooks and mile-a-minute bon mots tumbling from Vinnie Kircher’s jittery vocals. I was surprised to find out that making this list wasn't as easy as I thought it would be. A lot of the music I listened to had been from late '08 or stuff I've been revisiting. Anyway, here's what I came up with (in no particular order).

Yes, the second album (which is sort of the re-release of the first album until it wasn't — I got confused too) is much more cohesive, has better singles ("Bad Romance" and "Monster" trump "Poker Face" and "Just Dance...
