Dale Dickey as The G. Karl R Hearne: 'The idea for me was to take something that very easily could be a documentary or a social realist sort of drama but instead to put that as the context for a film that is genre and a little more fast paced' Karl R Hearne’s The G focuses on a gran (Dale Dickey) who refuses to go quietly after a corrupt legal guardian (Bruce Ramsay) steals her life out from under her and targets those she loves. Stuck in a carehome, she starts to take steps towards revenge as her granddaughter Emma (Romaine Denis) also starts to try to work an angle to get her tough-talking gran back. The film premiered at Tallinn Black Nights Film Festival, where we spoke to Canadian director Hearne about the inspiration of the film, those who target the old and the portrayal of female sexuality as a radical act.

Last year, we wrote about the pleasure of finally seeing character actor Dale Dickey - so memorable in roles in films including Hell And High Water and Winter’s Bone - finally get her teeth into a lead character, with Max Walker-Silverman’s gentle drama A Love Song. Now she’s back in a very different role, in Karl R Hearne’s The G, as foul-mouthed, no-nonsense gran Ann, who has vengeance on her mind after a corrupt legal guardian (Bruce Ramsay) steals her property and targets her loved ones. Spirited away to a care home, she begins to take matters into her own hands as her granddaughter Emma (Romaine Denis) also sets about trying to liberate her gran - who she calls “The G” - leading to a taut and enjoyably complex thriller.

“If you let your anger out, you live longer.” This growled assessment could be the life motto of Ann Hunter - or as her step-granddaughter Emma (Romane Denis) calls her “The G”. Played with a fierce intensity by Dale Dickey, who continues to shine in leading roles after years playing memorable character support, Ann is not your average gran.
Inspired by genuine real-life cases and the forceful personality of his own gran, Karl R Hearne’s taut and enjoyably complex thriller outlines a legal scam that sees Ann and her sick husband Chip (Greg Ellwand) branded incapable of looking after themselves and thrust into a care home under the instruction of a “guardian”, who is convinced that the couple have a secret stash of assets.
That Ann is essentially a tough-talking, permanently smoking, heavy drinking old boot, who hates most people but also cares deeply, and for, Chip, makes it.

As the Black Nights Film Festival in Tallinn, Estonia, prepares for its 27th edition, Variety spoke with artistic director Tiina Lokk about its ambitions and coming highlights.
“If you see the festival like a big building, then all the walls are in and the building is ready, but some rooms are not furnished yet,” Lokk says, before adding philosophically. “I don’t believe that festivals can ever be completely ready. Because at the moment when I say, ‘Yes, now everything is ready,’ I’ve become like a stone and festivals, like show business in general, have to be always in the moment, changing.”
Tallinn boasts an impressive program this year featuring 117 world and international premieres. The opening film “The Guardians of the Formula,” directed by Dragan Bjelogrlić, is a co-production featuring a number of countries which are part of the “Focus” program, highlighting work from Serbia and South East Europe countries,...
