As you've probably figured out over many years of FEARnet music reporting, extreme horror metal is a pretty cluttered landscape, so it takes a long time to sift through thousands of bands to find those dark gems that make it to the top of our playlist. But the day I came in contact with indie label Razorback Recordings, I knew I'd hit paydirt when it came to brutal gore grind, horror metal and Italian-style retro synth music – with a roster that includes Sweden's Anima Morte, a must-listen for fans of vintage Euro horror, and last year's Halloween pick Orloff, whose doomy, gothic-tinged death metal comes wrapped in grindhouse nostalgia. This year, the label comes through again with another unique and talented metal outfit: the trio Howling, who make their full-length debut A Beast Conceived tomorrow, have two traits that hooked me: first, as their name and fantastic promo art suggests,...

This October, Idw launch the second volume of Eternal Descent, the epic fantasy saga that portrays the classic battle between heaven and hell with a unique twist: rather than spandex clad superheroes, the characters in Eternal Descent originate from the world of heavy metal, and instead of web shooters or adamantium claws they wield guitars that are capable of unleashing devastating energy. Dean Threadgold got a chance to chat with series creator Llexi Leon about the book, the fusion of metal and comics and his plans to turn Eternal Descent into a multimedia property.
Eternal Descent might not have Superman and Batman in it but, in their place, it has something that is equally iconic. The series features cameos from famous metal guitarists such as Wayne Static (Static X), Gus G (Firewind, Ozzy Ozbourne), Dan Jacobs (Atreyu) and Jon Donais (Shadows Fall), with some of them appearing as brave heroes...

Arch Enemy star Angela Gossow was so taken aback when her pal Adam Darski aka Nergal was diagnosed with cancer this summer, she rushed to the doctor's surgery to undergo a health check-up.
The frontwoman has been rocked by the recent deaths of rockers including Ronnie James Dio, Slipknot's Paul Gray, former Stereophonics drummer Stuart Cable and Avenged Sevenfold's Jimmy Sullivan aka The Rev. Gossow was left further devastated when Behemoth's Darski revealed he was suffering from a life-threatening form of leukaemia in August - but the sad news was the wake-up call she needed to ensure she takes better care of herself.
Gossow tells Britain's Kerrang! magazine, "It's been a terrible year for metal. Everyone (in the rock world) is starting to look at their own consumption of alcohol and cigarettes, what kind of food they eat and just how much touring their body can take. It's a genuine concern for me.
