To independent filmmaker Derek Ting, Hong Kong is the place that made his dream come true. It is the city where he and partner Joyce Yung began a decade-long ride in filmmaking and production with the founding of Random Art Workshop, which has produced three narrative feature films and a range of creative content.
A decade into navigating Asia and the West throughout a globe-trotting filmmaking journey, the company strives to grow bigger with greater ambition to turn future projects into new vehicles that would allow the company’s founders to give back to the city while supporting international productions from a global perspective.
“We want to be the global leader in telling universal impactful stories by guiding creators to maximize a project’s vision and potential leveraging technology and adaptability to optimize workflow,” Yung tells Variety.
“I understand the Western taste and I also have the sensitivity towards the Eastern culture.

Directed by George Nolfi (The Adjustment Bureau), this account of a life-changing real-life fight between kung fu superstar-in-waiting Bruce Lee and martial arts grandmaster Wong Jack Man is less a of biopic and more of a fictionalisation based on a true story. Taken on those terms, it’s a lot of fun, though it’s likely to frustrate Bruce Lee aficionados looking for a more faithful approach.

2017-08-24T14:15:38-07:00Box Office Preview: Another Quiet Weekend on the Way
According to The Hollywood Reporter, this weekend is shaping up to be even quieter at the box office than last week was.
Via The Hollywood Reporter–
The dog days of August are just that at the U.S. box office.
This weekend, a trio of smaller offerings enter the fray — The Weinstein Co.'s animated Leap!, martial arts pic Birth of the Dragon and All Saints, a faith-based film from Sony's Affirm label that is only opening in 700-plus locations. Even if they do solid business in their own right, tracking shows Leap! grossing the most of the three, or $4 million-$5 million, as summer revenue slips even farther behind from last year.

"Sooner or later, gunna have to fight him." Bh Tilt has just unveiled a brand new trailer for Birth of the Dragon, a fictional feature based on the true story of the legendary Bruce Lee. This film is controversial because it's not an accurate depiction of the events or history of Bruce Lee, and had a white main character but this new edit is apparently much better. Starring Philip Ng as a cocky, young Bruce Lee living in San Francisco training and teaching his kung fu skills. He is confronted by a legendary Shaolin monk named Wong Jack Man, played by Yu Xia, who is upset that he is sullying the art and spirituality of kung fu. The main white guy is played by Billy Magnussen, with a cast including Jin Xing, Jingjing Qu, and Simon Yin. The publicist is keen to point out that this is a brand new cut of the film,...

I was a huge fan of the first film in what now looks to be a burgeoning new martial arts film franchise. The Man With the Iron Fists was everything I love about martial arts movie and was obviously a labour of love for its star and Wu_Tang Clan member RZA. Sadly, despite the out-pouring of love from wuxia fans and internet geeks like myself, the film did not perform as well as I’m sure the studio would’ve liked. But that doesn’t stop the franchise from continuing as a direct-to-market series – and so we have The Man With the Iron Fists 2.

When RZA – co-founder of Wu-Tang Clan – stepped behind the lens for the first time back in 2012, he introduced the moviegoing audience to a pulse-pounding actioner in the form of The Man with the Iron Fists. Fast forward a little over two years and we’re now standing on the verge of the sequel’s arrival on DVD and Blu-Ray, and We Got This Covered has an exclusive clip to share with you for The Man with the Iron Fists 2.
Picking up the pieces from its predecessor, the martial arts follow-up will once again center around Thaddeus (played by the aforementioned RZA), who finds himself drawn into battle once more despite his best efforts to put his violent past behind him.
Rounding out the international ensemble are Dustin Nguyen (22 Jump Street), Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa (47 Ronin), Eugenia Yuan (Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon: The Green Legend), Pim Bubear (Ninja: Shadow of a Tear...

Scott Screened at: Review 1, NYC, 7/18/12 Opens: August 10, 2012 When the British left their Hong Kong colony in 1997, they got a promise from the People’s Republic of China that Hong Kong’s capitalist system would be untouched for at least fifty years. While Hong Kong residents were right to be fearful that China would break the promise, something interesting happened. Instead of China’s communizing Hong Kong, Hong Kong capitalized (if you will) the mainland. Today cities like Shanghai and Beijing could actually be mistaken for [ Read More ]...

Can you really go wrong with zombies in bikinis? I mean, really? Before you answer that seemingly simple question, I implore you to watch the trailer for director Simon Yin’s “Zomb’asians: Thongs of the Dead”, a motion picture that shall be presented in the glory of “Triple D”. That’s clever, right? Anyway, if the idea of watching a flick that incorporates the word “Thongs” into its title is appealing to you, then you may find the embedded video more than a little amusing. Two words: Tongue decapitation. I’ll let you process that for a moment. Check out this synopsis: A group of hormonally charged teenagers are trapped on an a mysterious island when their teacher goes missing. They turn to the islands only resident, a strange ghost busting taoist monk, for help. He tells them of the island’s undead curse and his constant struggle with...

Director Simon Yin understands what boys want from their splatter films. They want hot women in bikinis. They want a liberal dosing of blood. They want more hot women in bikinis. And if you can throw in the occasional double entendre, goofy vocal overdub and a catchy theme song or two that's good, too. And Yin aims to give all of this and more to audiences with the upcoming Zombasians.A group of hormonally charged teenagers are trapped on a mysterious island when their teacher goes missing. They turn to the islands only resident, a strange ghost busting Taoist monk, for help. He tells them of the island's undead curse and his constant struggle with evil as the lone protector of humanity on the island....

Yes, you heard right people we said Triple D! Zomb'asians: Thongs of the Dead is a horror/comedy fresh in the works. The film is being directed by Simon Yin from a screenplay by Russell Wait from an original idea by Russell Wait and Gary Gibbons. This sounds like a lot of glorious boobified fun and I can't wait for more news on this flick!

Here in Hong Kong, news has just surfaced of an upcoming independent film project that immediately caught my eye, not least because it claims to prominently feature legions of ample-chested undead as well as plentiful gore and comedy kung-fu hijinks.
While Zomb'asians: Thongs Of The Dead is still very much in the pre-production phase (no cast members have yet been named), the official website states that the script is finished and they will soon be running camera tests and looking to begin shooting a concept trailer "in the next few days." The film is to be directed by Simon Yin, who has been making quite a name for himself in Hong Kong over the past few years, helming a number of short films, music videos, TV commercials and the like, while friend of the site Mike Leeder is on board as one of the film's producers.

Jennifer Thym is a Hong Kong filmmaker with a genre-bending web series she defines as ‘magical realism’. Lumina features a female lead in a strangely sci-fi modern world where mirrors lead to romance and corporate greed, and a supernatural force called The Mirrorati that are to be feared. Thym developed her web series with some immersive storylines, deep back stories, and a long-term plan that could include a feature film, graphic novelizations, and a Mmorpg (massively multiplayer online role playing game.)
“In TV terms, I think it's closest to Lost,” says Thym about Lumina's genre, “a serial thriller interwoven with fantastical elements and real world conspiracies...”
Lumina as a series is unlike anything else out there right now on the web or on television, despite having similarities to Lost. And the name ‘Lumina’ for her lead character is unorthodox as well. Maybe that’s because it is something Thym heard in a dream.
