Dune is one of the standout films of this decade. The film is an immaculate adaptation of Frank Herbert’s novel of the same name, and Denis Villeneuve proved his genius once more with this production.
The technical aspects of the film are very intriguing, contributing just as much to the finished product. Ultimately, the results are glorious, from the more obvious features, such as acting and direction, to the more mechanical facets, such as sound production and editing.
Dune and its sequel are as much a visual treat as they are an auditory delight. Moreover, a legendary Jamaican dub reggae artist inspired the team to create some of the most chilling scenes ever seen on a screen.

The 2022 Oscar winners have been revealed! A whopping 276 films were eligible to be voted on by members of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, but only 120 entries made the final cut across 23 categories. "Dune" cleaned up six wins for best sound, best original score, best production design, best film editing, best cinematography, and best visual effects. Will Smith took home to award for best actor in a leading role, and Ariana DeBose won for best actress in a supporting role for "West Side Story" - making history as the first Afro-Latina to win an acting Oscar.
Despite its 12 nominations, "The Power of the Dog" only snagged an award for best directing. "Belfast," which tied with "West Side Story" for seven nods, only won for best original screenplay. But overall, Netflix was this year's powerhouse, racking up 27 total nominations.

Denis Villeneuve was not nominated for Best Director, but his sci-fi epic “Dune” swept the Oscars Sunday night with six wins — the most of any film. Most quick to point out this disparity were Villeneuve’s below-the-line collaborators, who headed backstage after accepting their trophies with a common refrain: It’s all thanks to Villeneuve.
“Denis is the man,” Best Cinematography winner Greig Fraser said. “Every article or everything that is written about ‘Dune’ must start with the words ‘Denis Villeneuve.'” During his televised acceptance speech, the Australian Dp referred to Villeneuve as “Master Denis.”
“Dune” also won awards for Visual Effects, Production Design, Editing, Original Score, and Sound. It was also nominated for four other awards, including Best Picture.

It was a “Dune” crafts celebration Sunday at the Oscars, with Denis Villeneuve’s sci-fi powerhouse from Warner Bros. grabbing six out of eight wins for cinematography, production design, editing, original score, sound, and visual effects.
“Dune” was the big screen event of the season, ushering in the reopening of theaters after the pandemic with its heady mix of politics and religion wrapped around a hero’s journey in the desert. It only came up short in costume design and makeup and hairstyling, where it got overshadowed by three-time Oscar winner Jenny Beaven’s ’70’s punk look for Emma Stone in “Cruella” (Disney), and the transformation of Best Actress winner Jessica Chastain into the infamous televangelist for “The Eyes of Tammy Faye” (Searchlight Pictures).

Dune won the Oscar for Achievement in Sound, in one of tonight’s category outcomes that had been widely predicted.
The statuette was one of eight being handed out in a non-televised series of announcements leading up to the main broadcast. While the decision to cut the categories from the main telecast has drawn a fierce backlash, the recipients’ 45-second speech did not include any mention of the controversy.
Theo Green, one of the five specialists cited by the Academy, thanked director Denis Villeneuve in edited remarks shown during the Oscar broadcast. “You, sir, were like the spice flowing through our brains, turning our humble ideas into your imaginary world.” He also thanked composer Hans Zimmer and editor Joe Walker, who also won Oscars for their work on Dune and “treated us as fellow artists. Powerhouse “Dune” (Warner Bros.) took the early lead, grabbing four out of five craft Oscars after the controversial pre-taped ceremony of eight categories an hour before the ABC broadcast at 8 p.m. Et/5 p.m. Pt. They were presented by “Dune” co-stars Josh Brolin and Jason Momoa in an unprecedented move to tighten the show and boost sagging ratings, and will appear in an edited version throughout the broadcast.
Denis Villeneuve’s sci-fi epic “Dune” won editing, production design, original score, and sound. Ahead of the 2021 Oscars, the academy made the decision to merge the Best Sound Editing and Best Sound Mixing categories into one. The films vying for the second annual Best Sound prize are “Belfast,” “Dune,” “No Time to Die,” “The Power of the Dog,” and “West Side Story.” Our current odds indicate that “Dune” (31/10) will be victorious, followed in order of likelihood by “West Side Story” (39/10), “No Time to Die” (4/1), “The Power of the Dog” (9/2), and “Belfast” (9/2).
The craftspeople included in the current lineup have collectively amassed a staggering 86 previous nominations and 16 wins for their sound work in 57 films. Those responsible for the largest chunks are Andy Nelson and Gary Rydstrom, whose shared bid for “West Side Story” brings their respective individual totals to 22 and 19. Rydstrom has collected seven trophies over the years, including two each for “Terminator 2: Judgment Day” (1992), “Jurassic Park” (1994), and “Saving Private Ryan” (1999) and one for...

Updated March 21: “Dune” got two big boosts with Mpse and Cas wins, bolstering its Oscar chances on Sunday. The sci-fi epic took feature effects/foley at the virtual 69th annual Mpse Golden Reel Awards on March 13, and then live-action sound mixing at the 58th annual Cinema Audio Society Awards at the InterContinental Los Angeles Downtown.

However, the sonic power and complexity of Denis Villeneuve’s “Dune” is going to be hard to beat. Its great achievement is creating a grounded reality that is both innovative and believable. The most shocking snub of this year’s Oscar nominations was Denis Villeneuve’s omission from the best directing category for his science-fiction epic “Dune.” “It’s better to be in that position than the opposite,” Villeneuve tells Variety’s Awards Circuit Podcast. “I prefer people say you should have been there instead of ‘what the hell are you doing there?’ I’m not making movies to get awards recognition. If you do that, you’re not walking the right path. I make cinema because I love the art form of cinema. I love making movies. If you had told me a year ago that we would get 10 nominations, including best picture, I would have laughed and said, ” You are out of your mind.”
On this episode of the award-winning “Variety Awards Circuit Podcast,” double Oscar-nominee Villeneuve discusses his passion for creating the world of “Dune” and that best director snub.

“The worm was a challenge. But it wasn’t just the worm, it was the worm and the sand,” reveals “Dune” visual effects supervisor Paul Lambert. He recently scored an Oscar nomination for bringing the harsh, sand-covered world of Arrakis to life in Denis Villenueve’s sci-fi epic. The key to delivering photoreal digital effects in the film was to find the right real world references to make this far away world believable. Watch the exclusive video interview above.

“Dune” was the big winner at the 2022 BAFTAs with five wins in the craft categories. Jane Campion’s “The Power of the Dog” won the coveted best film BAFTA and best director.
However, Campion could not be present at the awards, and her lead Benedict Cumberbatch collected the award on her behalf. Another notable absentee was Will Smith, who won best actor for “King Richard.” Both Campion and Smith were in Los Angeles attending the Critics Choice Awards, where they also won.
The evening was otherwise star-studded, with a full house at London’s Royal Albert Hall. The awards were hosted by Rebel Wilson, who was at her irreverent best. Her targets included the Royal family and 10 Downing Street.
The ongoing war in Ukraine was also acknowledged on at least three occasions during the awards evening. Wilson, while introducing Emilia Jones’ performance of Joni Mitchell’s “Both Sides Now” from “Coda,...

Updated with winners list: Netflix’s The Power of the Dog was named the Best Film on Sunday at the Ee British Academy Film Awards. The victory in BAFTA’s marquee category, along with a win by Jane Campion as Best Director, helped cement the Western as a front-runner in the race for the Oscar.
The in-person ceremony at Royal Albert Hall in London and hosted by Rebel Wilson saw Warner Bros’ Dune dominated in the crafts categories, finishing with a leading five trophies: for Production Design, Special Visual Effects, Cinematography, Sound and Original Score. No other film had more that two wins.
Dune, thought, lost out to Dog in the Best Film race that also included Focus Features’ Belfast, which won the Outstanding British Film award tonight; Licorice Pizza, which took the Original Screenplay prize for Paul Thomas Anderson; and Netflix’s satire Don’t Look Up.

BAFTA award winners Tom Cross and Elliot Graham have decried the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences’ decision to cut eight different Oscar categories, including film editing, from the live telecast.
Although “No Time to Die” is not nominated for best film editing at the Oscars, the duo said they were unhappy with the Academy’s decision to remove craft categories from its live awards broadcast during the BAFTA winners press conference after picking up their award.

In conjunction with Hans Zimmer’s inventive score, the innovative sound design of “Dune” helps drive the mystical journey of Paul Atreides (Timothée Chalamet) on the desert planet Arrakis, where he bumps up against the unshakable force of nature. Indeed, score and sound blend together seamlessly into an organic soundscape, steered by editor Joe Walker, contributing mightily to Denis Villeneuve’s sensory experience. No wonder “Dune” is the frontrunner for score, sound, and editing.
“Denis wanted the sound to be gritty and realistic, and if you landed on Arrakis this is what you’d hear or what a documentary crew might’ve captured,” said supervising sound editor/designer Mark Mangini, who reunited with the Oscar-nominated “Blade Runner 2049” team of supervising sound editor/designer Theo Green and re-recording mixers Doug Hemphill and Ron Bartlett. “That initial framing of his goals informed everything that we subsequently designed and created and that Ron and Doug would mix.

The hustle and bustle of awards season is nearing an end, with Oscar voting getting underway on March 17. So naturally, every contender is looking to gain an advantage, and the BAFTA and Critics Choice ceremonies, which take place March 13, provide that opportunity.
At Cca, Kenneth Branagh’s “Belfast” and Steven Spielberg’s “West Side Story” lead the tally with 11 nominations apiece, including best picture. Still, with a group of more than 500 North America-based broadcast journalists and writers doing the voting, we shouldn’t expect either to triumph unequivocally.

At BAFTA, “Belfast’s” six-nom tally isn’t as robust as Focus Features would have liked, but prospects look strong for the film to pick up wins for original screenplay, outstanding British film and possibly supporting actor Ciarán Hinds, who is a legend across the pond. “Denis is unique in that he encourages us to use sound as vital a narrative storytelling tool as sound can be,” explains “Dune” supervising sound editor Mark Mangini of director and writer Denis Villenueve. Mangini recently earned an Oscar nomination, along with sound designer Theo Green. The pair praised the collaborative atmosphere which Villeneuve created, an extension of their successful partnership on “Blade Runner 2049.” “We knew that we were all invited to throw ideas around,” says Green. Those ideas informed not just the sonic elements of “Dune,” but connected to the story as a whole. Watch the exclusive video interview above.
The duo was intent on creating a soundscape that contained narrative components, and few pieces of sound were as important to the story as “The Voice.” In Frank Herbert’s original novel, this is a power of persuasion which humans can develop with the right training and focus,...

The best picture Oscar race is in a dead heat, with any number of paths to victory. But there’s another fierce competition, years in the making, to be the first streaming giant to win the Academy Awards’ most coveted honor.
On the television side, Netflix and Amazon each made a play to become the first streamer to win the Emmy Award for either of the top series categories, but Hulu shattered the glass ceiling with “The Handmaid’s Tale” in 2017. On the film side, could Apple Original Films be the surprise streaming giant to take home the Oscar statuette for best picture with the delightful family drama “Coda”?

The most shocking snub of the Oscar noms was Denis Villeneuve’s omission from the best directing category for his science-fiction epic “Dune.”
The film’s 10-nomination haul includes best picture and adapted screenplay, the latter perceived to be its most difficult to attain. Yet, Villeneuve’s lack of recognition for directing could rally widespread support from Academy voters and result in the film tying or surpassing a 50-year record held by “Cabaret” (1972).
Bob Fosse’s classic adaptation of the Broadway stage musical set a record at the 45th Academy Awards for the most Oscars received without winning best picture. Fosse’s film took eight trophies: for directing, actress (Liza Minnelli), supporting actor (Joel Grey), sound, art direction (now called production design), cinematography, film editing and the now defunct score adaptation and original song score. Francis Ford Coppola’s “The Godfather” walked away with three major prizes at the ceremony: picture,...

The mighty “Dune” (from Warner Bros.) affirmed its craft dominance on Tuesday by grabbing eight out of a possible nine Oscar nominations (original song wasn’t in play). Thus, Denis Villeneuve’s sweeping and heady sci-fi ran the field with everything else: cinematography, costume design, editing, makeup/hair, original score, production design, sound, and visual effects. Historically, that puts “Dune” right behind “The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King” and “Titanic,” which both had nine craft noms.
The closest competitors with four noms were Jane Campion’s Netflix western, “The Power of the Dog”, and Steven Spielberg’s “West Side Story” remake at Fox/Disney — which was two shy of the 1961 original. Landing three noms were Guillermo del Toro’s “Nightmare Alley” at Searchlight/Disney and Daniel Craig’s James Bond finale, “No Time to Die,” at MGM/UA.

“Dune,” “Nightmare Alley,” “No Time to Die” and “Spider-Man: No Way Home” are among the nominees for this year’s Golden Reel Awards, presented by the Motion Picture Sound Editors (Mpse).
“Dune,” a frontrunner in the Oscar race for best sound, leads the way with three nominations for outstanding achievement in sound editing including feature effects/foley, feature dialogue/Adr and feature underscore.
“It’s been a fantastic year for sound, and we look forward to celebrating the incredible work sound editors have performed for movies, television, games, documentaries and other creative media last year,” said Mpse president Mark Lanza. “We are excited this year to recognize Ron Howard with our Filmmaker Award and Chic Ciccolini as our Career Achievement recipient. Building on the success of our first-ever virtual ceremony last year, we are planning an even more spectacular night of fun, surprises and great achievements in sound.”

Sound is one of the most important and misunderstood elements in filmmaking, and sound for sci-fi films adds another degree of difficulty.
“Dune,” directed by Denis Villeneuve, boasts two supervising sound editors, Mark Mangini and Theo Green, who worked on the film for 18 months.
“Science fiction is always complex,” says Mangini. “Theo and I called it ‘universe building.’ It’s a blank slate because nothing — people, machines, technology — exists, so all of it has to be invented. In the ‘Dune’ universe, we have ornithopters, dream sequences, the Voice, this palette of unknown things that make sound, which we had to invent from scratch.
“Denis’s mandate was to ground it in an organic reality. He didn’t want it to feel science-fiction-y. He wanted you to watch film and feel those sounds existed in acoustic reality. Theo and I had a philosophy: Fdr, or Fake Documentary Realism.”

In the ever-growing list of awards shows, American Cinematheque is throwing its clout behind a new one they call Tribute to the Crafts, an in-person celebration of the artisans behind the scenes who don’t get nearly the attention during the season that their above-the-line colleagues seem to. The ceremony, which will try to rectify this oversight, is set for Wednesday January 26, at the Cinematheque’s Aero Theatre in Santa Monica.
The new show will “honor those who are at the very heart of filmmaking, and have exhibited extraordinary work behind the camera, over the past year.” The evening will celebrate individuals in fourteen categories covering all aspects of filmmaking and will showcase clips from each of their respective films. The audience for this invitation-only event will be composed of members from AMPAS, PGA, WGA, DGA, SAG-AFTRA, BAFTA and Critics Choice.

"Denis expects you to bring your A-game." SoundWorks Collection has debuted a new 30-minute making of featurette / short doc exploring the Sound Design of Dune. This is made & edited by Michael Coleman and features interviews with director Denis Villeneuve, plus many members of his crew: sound editor & sound designer Mark Mangini, sound editor & sound designer Theo Green, re-recording mixer Ron Bartlett. They discuss the creative benefits of early collaboration with Denis, the process of crafting Dune's unique soundscapes including: Arrakis desert, sandworm, ornithopter, spice, voice of the Bene Gesserit. There's So many fascinating revelations: the sound crew's early work with Denis, not just in post; Denis approached it as a documentary; they went and actually recorded sand in Death Valley (inspired by "singing sand dunes"). It all makes sense, of course, because this is Dune! I'm expecting this team to land an Oscar nom next year. Thanks to Michael...

IndieWire lists Denis Villeneuve’s “Dune” as a frontrunner to land an Oscar nomination for Best Sound this awards season, and it’s all thanks to the film’s lead sound team: Mark Mangini, Theo Green, and Ron Bartlett. The three gentlemen recently joined Villeneuve on Dolby’s “Sound + Image Lab” podcast to break down the soundscape of “Dune.” The hourlong conversation revealed one of the sounds in the film Villeneuve is most proud of: The Ornithopter. It took a “crazy recipe” of individual sounds mixed together to create the vehicle’s soundscape.
“I was terrified,” Mangini said when he learned creating the Ornithopter sound was his responsibility. “It’s an unknown method of transportation and it uses wings and we don’t even know what the propulsion is. We embarked on an extensive experimentation process of trying to find the individual elements. What could we make wings out of?...

This is the year of musicals and that means sound design and sound mixing is sweet music to one’s ears. From “In the Heights,” to “Tick, Tick … Boom!” and “Dear Evan Hansen,” and the yet-unseen “West Side Story,” sound teams worked finessed audio tracks recorded on set, pre-records and studio-recorded vocals. In addition, sound mixers seamlessly took environmental sounds to match what audiences saw on screen.
Take Vanessa’s entrance in “In the Heights.” Melissa Barrera struts down Washington Heights in black studded heels, which tap to the beat of the song, and her vocals flawlessly match the emotion as she tries to negotiate her down payment with a landlord.
“Dune’s” sound is a master class in itself of crafts, not only visually but also sonically as Hans Zimmer’s score weaves in with the sound of the desert and sand. Sound folks Mark Mangini and Theo Green...

The 90th Academy Awards has concluded and I think a lot of movie geeks are happy with the way things played out! I couldn't be more excited to see Guillermo del Toro win Best Director and his film The Shape of Water win Best Picture of the year!
We also saw Gary Oldman win Best Actor, which he definitely deserved! Frances McDormand, took home the Best Actress Award and Sam Rockwell won for Best Supporting Actor for Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri. Then there was Jordan Peele, who won Best Original Screenplay for Get Out, which so freakin' cool!
Personally, the one film that I didn't think should have won was Call Me By Your Name for Best Adapted Screenplay. Molly's Game, Logan, Mudbound, and The Disaster Artist were all better films with better scripts!
Below you'll find a full list of the nominees with the winners bolded. Are you happy with the winners?...

“Dunkirk” is ahead to win Oscars for Best Sound Mixing and Best Sound Editing, and it’s no wonder since action-packed war movies often do well in audio categories. If the film indeed wins the award for its sound editing, it would additionally make history as Richard King would set a new record for the most wins in that category.
There is currently a six-way tie for the most Sound Editing wins. Ben Burtt, Charles L. Campbell, Per Hallberg, Richard Hymns, Gary Rydstrom and King have three victories apiece, including years when the prize was handed out as a special achievement award and not a competitive Oscar. King previously won his Oscars for “Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World” (2003), “The Dark Knight” (2008) and “Inception” (2010), and he earned additional nominations for “War of the Worlds” (2005) and “Interstellar” (2014). It was a clear victory for sci-fi sound editing Sunday night at the 65th annual Mpse Golden Reel Awards at the Westin Bonaventure. “War for the Planet of the Apes” was the surprise winner for Dialogue/Adr, splitting honors with “Blade Runner 2049,” which grabbed the Effects/Foley prize. The big loser was “Dunkirk” (which won the BAFTA sound award earlier Sunday). However, Christopher Nolan’s World War II survival epic took home the Music Score award and remains the sound editing Oscar favorite.
In addition, “The Greatest Showman,” “Coco,” “Loveless,” and “Jane” earned sound editing awards for Musical, Animation, Foreign Language, and Documentary. Sound editor Mark A. Mangini reveals that while he was inspired by the original “Blade Runner” (1982) for his work on Denis Villeneuve‘s followup, “Blade Runner 2049,” he didn’t want to copy it. “One of our early tasks was to understand what made the first film so rich and interesting sonically, and then find a way to deconstruct it and make it our own,” he explains. “We wanted to honor it in the way that it was so effective and so subversive in its use of sound.” By opening themselves up to a more musical and expressionistic style, Mangini and Theo Green reaped an Oscar nomination for Best Sound Editing. Watch our exclusive video interview with the duo above.

According to Green, Villeneuve wanted “a return to that universe,” but not a slavish reproduction.

When filmmakers talk about building the world of a movie, it is often in terms of its visual components – production design, special effects and cinematography – but necessarily not sound. But for a science fiction film set in the future, sound editors can’t rely on sound libraries or modern day sound effects; instead, they have to imagine and construct sounds based on how the world has changed, and in the case of “Blade Runner 2049,” how the dystopia Ridley Scott created in 1982 has evolved.
Most movies don’t really start dealing with sound design until post-production, but because of the demands and scope of the “Blade Runner 2049” soundscape, director Denis Villeneuve was able to put into practice an idea he had considered for a long time — bringing on sound designer Theo Green at the beginning of production, and supervising sound editor Mark Mangini just weeks later. Both men are...

The nominations for the 2018 Academy Awards are in and Guillermo del Toro's fantastic film, The Shape of Water, did pretty damn good as it leads the pack with thirteen of the nominations! Those include Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actress, Best Supporting Actor, Best Original Screenplay and more. This was one of my favorite movies of the year, so it was great to see it get a lot of love.
Christopher Nolan's Dunkirk ended up with eight nominations, including Best Picture and Best Director. Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri received seven nominations, including Best Picture, Best Actress, and Best Supporting Actor. Jordan Peele's Get Out also landed a few nominations including Best Director, which was cool!
As expected, James Franco and his film The Disaster Artist got snubbed amid sexual misconduct allegations surrounding the actor.
