“I am built like a brick shithouse,” Hannah Gadsby tells me over tea in a Hollywood cafe. “Solid, solid human.” She’s explaining how she survived being struck by five cars in the span of seven years. It would be a miracle for anyone else, but Gadsby, who’s been plagued by catastrophe her entire life, takes it more or less in stride. When she was nine, she crashed her bike and needed 56 stitches. When she was 15, she developed gallstones. After high school, she got a job at a supermarket,...

There's a new website offering comedy web series, and one of its first offerings is bringing a few big names to the platform. SnagFilms' Thundershorts is home to Teachers Lounge, which has arrived just a few days after its creators successfully completed a Kickstarter campaign. We wrote about Teachers Lounge a week ago, when it had just two days to raise the $5,000 it needed to reach its $50,000 crowdfunding goal. Sure enough, creators Ted Alexandro and Hollis James managed to reach their mark just under the wire, and they immediate released the first of four previously-shot episodes via Thundershorts. The big appeal of the Teachers Lounge Kickstarter was the promise of big name guest stars, who Alexandro was able to recruit thanks to his ties to the New York City stand-up comedy scene. Sure enough, the first episode includes an appearance from Jim Gaffigan, who plays a school nutritionist who runs...

Sometimes, it's nice to have a reminder that for every Daniel Tosh rape joke that gets made, there are thousands of alternatives that we can see on TV nearly every night. And this week was a good one for stand-up: Not only did we see the likes of Todd Barry and Ted Alexandro do stand-up on CBS, we got some great panel from Louis C.K., Marc Maron and Jen Kirkman.
Plus, Sebastian Maniscalco performed on "Conan" to promote his upcoming Showtime special, and newcomer Cristela Alonzo did great on "Conan," too.
Finally, the second season of "John Oliver's New York Stand-Up Show," Comedy Central's new show showcasing some of the funniest stand-up comedians in America, debuted this week as well. What a week!

Comedy Central announced the nominees for the second annual Comedy Awards earlier today and it was no laughing matter.
"Bridesmaids" and "Crazy, Stupid, Love." are about to face off in a two-way race for the most lauded flick, as each landed five nominations in the film categories.
"Midnight in Paris" followed with four nods, while "The Artist" and "Horrible Bosses" were close behind with three nominations each.
Considering its massive box office and award season success, the nominations for "Bridesmaids" — which include Comedy Film, Comedy Director - Film (Paul Feig), Comedy Screenplay and two nods in the Performance By an Actress - Film category (Kristen Wiig and Melissa McCarthy) — are no surprise. At least, not as big a surprise as someone pooping in a sink.
Despite critical acclaim, however, "Crazy, Stupid, Love." failed to gain much traction, making its haul of five nominations, including one in every non-animation category, even more impressive.

School's in session at Comedy Central with today's launch of online classes devoted to the art of stand-up comedy.
"Crash Course in Comedy" features 10 broadband video classes designed and instructed by comedian Ted Alexandro ("Comedy Central Presents") that aim to engage and educate hopeful comics.
Alexandro will give users tips on stage presence, joke development and how to write humorous material while illustrating his points with clips from the Comedy Central archive featuring comedians like Dave Attell, Lewis Black and Greg Giraldo.
"By and large, it's a real opportunity to engage our audience in a two-way street," said Lou Wallach, senior vp original programming and development. "We can talk about and show stand-up and give our audience a chance to be proactively involved."
The site's comic curriculum allows users to build their own avatars and customize it through voice, clothes and accessories. Online users can use this virtual comedian to read their own recorded jokes aloud.
"Unlike traditional curriculums, 'Crash Course in Comedy' was created to give our students the tools to perform, act up and cause mass hysteria," Wallach quipped.
