Swiss-American actress Dominique Devenport believes in luck. “I was having a beer with a friend of mine in a canteen in Munich and talking about how I felt a connection to Sisi,” she explained to Variety in a one-on-one conversation.
“What I didn’t realize was that the next day, he was meeting the film’s casting director. He told her about me, and she called.”
Word had spread that the six-hour period drama was in the works in acting circles, and Devenport studied acting in Munich at the Otto Falckenberg Schule. She originally got into acting through singing, she explains. “I was one of two little girls asked to run across a stage for a director and I thought it was really cool,” she said.
As for “Sisi”: “I auditioned and was cast but it takes even more luck than that because then it has to work with the actor cast opposite Sisi,...

Event series ‘Sisi,’ a new take on Empress Elizabeth of Austria from Rtl, Beta Film and Story House Productions, sets itself apart from the very get-go.
Romy Schneider’s ‘50s cult movie trilogy turned a historical icon into a decorous pop legend. Kicking off in 1854, “Sisi,” the new series, delivers scenes of gobsmacking glamor, as when the camera slowly rises to expose the grandeur of Sisi’s home, a lakeside chateau.
But its realism – sexual, political and psychological – brings an edge to such period money shots. A declaration of intentions, Sisi begins with the heroine (Dominique Devenport) as a teen, stealthily pleasuring herself in her bed until her sister barges in through the door. After a family dinner scene, cut to the dashing young Emperor Franz Josef (Jannik Schümann) astride a horse, riding – a reverse shot reveals – to a scaffold where he will personally authorize the public hanging of Hungarian rebels,...

Producer Gian-Piero Ringel, Oscar nominated for Wim Wenders’ “Pina,” and writer-director Sven Bohse, who directed true crime miniseries “Dark Woods,” a ratings hit last year in Germany, will be presenting their political thriller “Hinterland” this week as part of the European Film Market’s Co-Pro Series program. They spoke to Variety about the eight-part series, which has been acquired for international sales by Global Screen.
In “Hinterland,” former Neo-Nazi Andreas has started a new life in Berlin with his girlfriend and their daughter. He is “a man with a good heart who needs to feel needed in order to stay strong. When he feels weak, his dark side emerges,” says Bohse, whose directing credits also include Annette Hess’ 1950s-set miniseries “Ku’damm 56” and “Ku’damm 59.”

Production has started on German crime drama “Dark Woods,” based on the real-life 1989 disappearance of a woman who was the sister of a high-ranking German police officer. It will star Matthias Brandt (“Babylon Berlin”), Karoline Schuch (“Hanna’s Journey”), and August Wittgenstein (“Das Boot”). Silke Bodenbender (“Vater Mutter Morder”) and Nicholas Ofczarek (“Pagan Peak”) have also been cast in the series, which is for free-tv channel Das Erste.
Global Screen has international rights and will distribute the six-part drama. Bodenbender plays Barbara Neder, who went missing in Lower Saxony. Shortly before, two couples had been cruelly murdered in nearby woodlands.
The scripted series follows the efforts of her brother, a former senior police officer, to find her. Because the disappearance takes place outside his jurisdiction, he cannot officially investigate, but he sets out to solve the case, a quest for justice that continues past his retirement and ultimately sees him tracking a suspected serial killer.

Global Screen has picked up international distribution rights to spy thriller “1989 – A Spy Story,” as the 30th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall approaches. Inspired by true events, it tells the story of a female Stasi agent, placed in the U.S. embassy in the 1980s. When the Berlin Wall comes down, she expects to be uncovered any moment, but in a cat-and-mouse-game, she tries to escape detection.
Alexandra Heidrich, head of TV sales and acquisitions at Global Screen, said the show is “fast-paced, highly atmospheric and features a top-notch cast.” She added: “Knowing that several real-life Stasi spies live unexposed among us, makes the plot all the more relevant and intriguing.”
The series is produced by Moovie, a subsidiary of Constantin Film, in co-production with Rbb and Ard Degeto, supported by Mbb and Fff Bayern. It is set for a primetime broadcast on Ard Das Erste around...
