Chris Mortensen, an award-winning veteran reporter for ESPN, died Sunday morning, the network announced. He was 72 and no cause was given, but he had been battling cancer during his life.
“Mort was widely respected as an industry pioneer and universally beloved as a supportive, hard-working teammate,” ESPN chairman Jimmy Pitaro said in a statement. “He covered the NFL with extraordinary skill and passion, and was at the top of his field for decades. He will truly be missed by colleagues and fans, and our hearts and thoughts are with his loved one.”
Mortensen took a leave of absence from ESPN in 2016 after being diagnosed with Stage 4 throat cancer, which later spread to his lungs. He left ESPN in 2023 after joining the network in 1991.

Sports Illustrated‘s stunning mass layoffs Friday, which cast doubt on the future of the 70-year-old media stalwart, have prompted waves of emotional reaction across social media.
The Arena Group told the entire staff their jobs were being eliminated after Authentic Brands Group, which licenses the Si name, suspended that license to publish due to a missed payment of about $3.75 million.
It isn’t yet clear what the ultimate fate of Si will be, but it has been thrown into uncertainty. Sports Illustrated Union and The NewsGuild of New York issued a statement vowing to fight for the workers. “We have fought together as a union to maintain the standard of this storied publication that we love, and to make sure our workers are treated fairly for the value they bring to this company. It is a fight we will continue,” Mitch Goldich, NFL editor and unit chair at The NewsGuild of New York said.

Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes is confirming a rumor about his game day superstition…he has worn the same pair of red underwear every game of his career.
The revelation was actually made earlier this year by former Chiefs quarterback Chad Henne, who shared on an ESPN podcast, “There’s things that I’ve seen that nobody else has seen.”
ESPN’s Adam Schefter responded, “So he signs this half a billion dollar contract and he’s still wearing the same pair of underwear throughout his entire career?”
Well, on Monday (November 13), Peyton and Eli Manning asked Patrick about this superstition on the ManningCast, which airs during the Monday Night Football game.
Patrick said about the underwear, “First, my wife Brittany got them for me. So I’m not throwing y’all down, but I have to wear them. At the same time, I threw them on that first...

The NFL is serious about expanding the American version of football’s influence to the international market. So serious, it’s seriously thinking about a Super Bowl in London
Commissioner Roger Goodell spoke to a fan forum in London last week to promote the Baltimore Ravens/Tennessee Titans regular season game in the city. While admitting such a move is not happening soon, he said it has been considerered.
ESPN’s Adam Schefter first reported the news.
“It is not impossible, and it is something that has been discussed before,” Goodell said.
The next three Super Bowls are slated for Las Vegas, New Orleans and Santa Clara. But after that, it’s wide open, even though the league prefers to support cities with existing NFL franchises. The league has done regular season games in London, Germany and Mexico, and is said to be considering Spain and Brazil. A league official...

One NFL insider voice that ESPN viewers will not be listening to as the new season kicks off is Chris Mortensen as the football analyst has announced his retirement from the network.
Mortensen had quietly quit the sports network earlier this year and ahead of the start of the NFL season has made it public to all of his fans.
“Excited about another season but it’s time to reveal after my 33rd NFL draft in April, I made a decision to step away from ESPN and focus on my health, family and faith,” he shared on X, the social media platform formerly known as Twitter.
Luckily for fans who have been following his career for 33 years, he’s still going to be giving his hot takes on the NFL.
“The gratitude and humility is overwhelming. It’s not a classic retirement. I’ll still be here talking ball. It’s just time.

The New York Jets and their high-profile new quarterback, Aaron Rodgers, will be the focus of this year’s installment of HBO’s long-running Hard Knocks, according to multiple media reports.
The show, which documents a month of training camp action both on and off the field in the runup to the start of the regular season in September, last centered on the Jets in 2010. Jdrf, the leading global type 1 diabetes (T1D) research and advocacy organization, is thrilled to announce the 2023 Jdrf Children’s Congress, a three-day Washington D.C event that will bring children living with T1D face-to-face with lawmakers and top decision-makers.
Youth delegates from across the country, as well as Jdrf’s five international affiliates, will be joined by celebrity advocates to call on congress to renew the Special Diabetes Program (Sdp) and advocate for policies to ensure insulin is available at an affordable and predictable price.
The Sdp has accelerated the pace of T1D research through a long-term investment of funding at the National Institutes of Health. The program has led to significant scientific breakthroughs, including Tzield, the first disease-modifying treatment for T1D, which can delay the onset of the disease by over two years. Without Congressional action, the Sdp will expire at the end of September.

Aaron Rodgers’ weekly slot on Pat McAfee’s YouTube show is often a newsmaking draw, but Wednesday’s edition reached a whole new level as the quarterback confirmed his “intention” to play for the New York Jets.
The daily show drew just shy of 500,000 concurrent live viewers today, an audience several times the size of that for ESPN or other cable TV networks on a typical weekday. During the NFL’s free agency period, the destiny of Rodgers has been a major storyline as the 39-year-old kept the sports world and New York City in suspense for weeks about whether he would head to New York, stay with the Green Bay Packers, or just retire. Some have compared Wednesday’s silence-breaking interview with LeBron James’ widely hyped revelation in 2010 that he would “take his talents to South Beach” and play with the Miami Heat, a move famously packaged for TV as The Decision.

“The NFL continues to be in regular contact with the medical team caring for Damar Hamlin, and also the Bills and Bengals organizations and the NFL Players Association. After speaking with both teams and Nflpa leadership, NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell informed the clubs today that the Bills-Bengals game will not be resumed this week,” the league said in a statement.

Buffalo Bills’ defensive back Damar Hamlin had to be taken off the field on a stretcher on Monday in a frightening incident that lead to the game against the Cincinnati Bengals being suspended until further notice.
During the first quarter of Monday’s match-up, Hamlin tackled Bengals wide receiver Tee Higgins, and both men appeared to be uninjured following the tackle. However, shortly after, Damar appeared to stumble and collapse on the field.
Medical personnel rushed out onto the field with a stretcher to get Hamlin out of the stadium to receive medical treatment. An ambulance was driven onto the field to attend to Hamlin, and medics were reportedly forced to give the 24-year-old athlete CPR.
He was then placed on a stretcher, given oxygen and taken to the hospital via ambulance.
Players from both teams appeared to be deeply shaken, with many on the Bills moved to tears by the frightening incident.

As Elon Musk‘s second week running Twitter comes to a close, the social network is tilting toward outright anarchy.
The most visible problem arose from Musk’s harebrained idea of selling verification badges for 8 a month through the premium subscription Twitter Blue — without a mechanism for confirming the user’s identity. For years, you could trust that a blue check next to, for example, the name “Rudy W. Giuliani” indicated that the account was controlled by the former mayor of New York. Field Yates thinks fantasy football is catching up in popularity to the real thing.
“If you watch ‘SportsCenter though to the end, I’d bet if you put on an hour, there’s a pretty good chance, better than 50-50 you’re going to see at least one segment of fantasy sports,” he says in a recent interview.” I think it’s reflective of the appetite fans have for this type of content.”
ESPN has signed Yates to a new multi-year deal, ensuring he’ll be around to host both the daily “Fantasy Focus Football Podcast” as well as “Fantasy Football Now,” while contributing NFL analysis across several ESPN programs.

Colin Kaepernick, who last played football in 2016, the same year he started kneeling during the national anthem to protest racial injustice, is scheduled to work out this week for the Las Vegas Raiders, league sources told ESPN.

John Clayton, the longtime ESPN football reporter nicknamed “The Professor” for his breadth of knowledge about the NFL, died Friday in Washington state after a brief undisclosed illness, his family told ESPN.

Clayton’s five-decade career began when he was still a senior at Duquesne University, hired by the Pittsburgh Press to cover the Steelers. But he rose to prominence in his 20-plus years at ESPN, where his bespectacled appearance and encyclopedic knowledge of football won him wide admiration.

Update: Tom Brady’s mother, father and agent have weighed in on his alleged retirement plans following an ESPN report that the great quarterback will call it a day.
NBC Bay Area said the reports were incorrect. “I think his family would know first. I’m not sure where it (retirement story) all got started,” said Brady’s mother, Galynn Patricia Brady.
Brady’s father, Tom Brady Sr., also sent a text message to ESPN. “Tommy has made no such determination” on retirement. He went on to tell NFL Network that any reports of a retirement decision are “absolutely wrong.”
Brady’s agent, Don Yee, capped off the denials with an ambiguous statement to ESPN Adam Schefter, who was one of the reporters who broke the original story.

This The Simpsons review contains spoilers.
The Simpsons Season 33 Episode 11
After a three-episode, one of them a two-parter, rally of undisputed heavyweight wins, The Simpsons fail to cover the spread. Season 33 episode 11 “The Longest Marge,” is loaded with cynicism, bad sportsmanship, and subversive scrimmages, but the usually reliable, and equally economical, Monty Burns is shaving points. This is what earned Burt Reynolds the bad rep which preceded his character Paul “Wrecking” Crewe in the prison football classic comedy The Longest Yard, and it costs the installment the game ball.
The premise is solid. Mr. Burns backs a rookie football bad boy, Grayson Mathers, voiced by Beck Bennett, as the perfect spokesman to turn his sipping brandy into a guzzling brandy in an effort to increase sales. The hard-living image destroys the player on the field, and only Marge feels sorry enough to take care of him. Hilarity should ensue. It...

ESPN reporter Adam Schefter, under fire for giving an NFL team a pre-publication look at his story and investing with potential news sources, has responded with a statement,
Schefter, one of the top reporters on the National Football League for the network, is being criticized for sending an email containing a full draft of a story on the league’s collective bargaining agreement to former Washington Football Team president Bruce Allen, asking for a fact-check.
He called Allen “Mr. Editor” and asked for suggestions on potential changes in the story. Both tactics are considered taboo by reputable journalists.
Schefter’s email came to light after emails from the NFL’s investigation into the Washington Football Team’s culture emerged. The emails were part of an estimated 650,000 uncovered during the investigation, but only a handful were released to media.

One of the biggest “revenge” games in NFL history takes place tonight, as Tom Brady of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers returns to New England to take on the Patriots. NBC’s Sunday Night Football will televise the game, starting at 8:00 Et/5:00 Pt. Brady, as most know, left the Patriots as a free agent after 20 years and six Super Bowl victories. He subsequently cemented his reputation as the Greatest Of All Time by leading Tampa Bay to a Super Bowl victory last season. Now, he confronts his old coach, Bill Belichick, who is hoping to spoil the homecoming. Belichick saw the Patriots devolve last year into a 7-9 mortal team, and the flinty coach was blamed for Brady’s departure amid reports of mutual animosity. ESPN NFL reporter Adam Schefter is known for his insider information and scooping the competition. But a Bloomberg report today raised questions on whether his recent investment in a gambling app would compromise his journalism.
Schefter, along with New England Patriots owner Robert Kraft and others, recently invested in Boom Entertainment, a creator of sports and casino gambling apps, including NBC Sports Predictor.
Bloomberg raised the question on whether a journalist who relies on inside connections can be counted on to potentially undermine his own financial position with his reporting.
“Viewers, and Schefter’s 8.5 million Twitter followers, might end up wondering whether he will shade his opinions or bury important information if he directly or indirectly has money riding on games and athletes,” the Bloomberg story said.
It also wondered aloud whether his association with Kraft will shade his New England Patriots coverage.

President Trump has had a rough go of it since inciting a deadly mob to storm the Capitol and overthrow democracy last week.
He’s been suspended from Twitter, he’s staring down a second impeachment, and his approval rating is at an all-time low. He’s “gutted” by the move, reported Maggie Haberman of The New York Times.

New England Patriots coach Bill Belichick is the latest onetime ally to back away from Donald Trump in the wake of the assault on the U.S. Capitol last week by the president’s supporters.
In a statement obtained by ESPN Monday night, Belichick declined to receive the Presidential Medal of Freedom from Trump. The legendary coach singled out “the tragic events of last week” for his decision, apparently referring to the acts of insurrection by Trump supporters.
Belichick won six Super Bowls with the Patriots after he took over as coach in 2000. He is the NFL’s winningest active head coach and third on the all-time list.

This year in sports can’t be summed up with Top 10 lists and reels of game clips. So ESPN is going to try some different tactics.
ESPN plans a three-hour primetime event to bid farewell to year in sports that often involved events that took place well off the field. The show, “SportsCenter Presents: 2020 – Heroes, History and Hope,”will air as three one-hour programs and will kick off on Thursday, December 24 at 8 p.m. Jeremy Schaap and Lisa Salters. It will also be available on the ESPN mobile app

The 2020 Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade was a welcome — but atypical — sight. Though no crowd could be in attendance, 20.7 million TV viewers tuned in from 9 a.m. to noon, when it averaged a 5.3 rating among adults 18-49, according to Nielsen.
Those numbers made the Thanksgiving parade NBC’s highest-rated and most-watched entertainment broadcast of 2020.
The parade had 4.7 million YouTube streams, NBC said. An encore presentation of the parade got 3.5 million TV viewers and had a 0.9 rating in the key demo.
The year-ago 2019 parade, when people were still allowed to congregate in the New York City streets scored 22.11 million total viewers, the annual event’s smallest TV audience since 2008 (21.69 million viewers). This year’s eclipsed that mark (in the wrong direction).
See how the previous dozen Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parades have fared here. In 2013, the parade topped 25 million viewers, the largest sum of this grouping.

“We all loved Vaughn,” said John Pluym, senior deputy editor for digital NFL coverage at ESPN. “He had a heart of gold. He was so helpful to our reporters. The NFL will observe June 19, known as “Juneteenth” as an official holiday, closing its offices.
Juneteenth, also known as “Freedom Day,” is the yearly celebration that marks the end of slavery in the United States.
“The power of this historical feet in our country’s blemished history is felt each year, but there is no question that the magnitude of this event weighs even more heavily today in the current climate,” NFL commissioner Roger Goodell wrote in a memo Friday. “Juneteenth not only marks the end of slavery in the United States, but it also symbolizes freedom — a freedom that was delayed, and brutally resisted; and though decades of progress followed, a freedom for which we much continue to fight.”

Phew! On Thursday, Tom Brady gave Patriots fans quite the scare with a cryptic social media post. Keeping things simple, the pro football player shared a black and white photo of what appears to be him walking out onto a stadium. Between the photo's somber tone and Brady's lack of explanation, many fans speculated that it was the 42-year-old's way of announcing his departure from the New England Patriots, or worse, his retirement! Thankfully, it was a false alarm. Seeing Twitter's reactions to the post, ESPN Senior NFL Insider Adam Schefter took to Twitter to set the record straight to the best of his abilities. "Am told that this tweet is not related to Tom Brady's football future,"...
