Kate Winslet went all in for her portrayal of war correspondent and photographer Lee Miller.
As the lead star and producer of the eponymous biopic “Lee,” Winslet dedicated herself to embodying Miller’s tenacity both onscreen and off. Oscar winner Winslet personally paid the crew’s salaries for two weeks during the indie film shoot, with the feature being helmed by former collaborator and famed cinematographer Ellen Kuras.
“Lee” charts a pivotal decade in the life of American war correspondent and photographer Lee Miller (Kate Winslet) including her work during WWII. The film shows how Miller lived her life at full-throttle in pursuit of truth, for which she paid a huge personal price, forcing her to confront a traumatic and deeply buried secret from her childhood.

One of the breakout hits of SXSW 2024 was “Magpie,” a tense thriller that stars Daisy Ridley as a woman who begins to spiral after her young daughter is cast in a movie, and her husband becomes enamored with the actress playing her onscreen mother.
The neo-noir was a passion project for the actress and producer, who conceived the idea after forming a close bond with a child star playing her own onscreen daughter and began to imagine how a similar relationship could drive a wedge between a family. She took the idea to her husband Tom Bateman, who wrote the script that ultimately became “Magpie.” Hours after the film’s SXSW premiere, Ridley and her collaborators sat down with IndieWire to discuss crafting the film that gave her one of the meatiest roles of her career.
“I was on set for ‘The Marsh King’s Daughter,’ and I had a little girl in it.

Daisy Ridley took a moment during the post-premiere Q&a for her indie thriller “Magpie” at SXSW on Saturday night to reflect on the journey of bringing the film to life.
“I remember the first day on set when I saw the trailers saying ‘Oh my god, we’re making a film.’ Now, I feel like, ‘Oh my god, we’re here,’ ” Ridley said after “Magpie” had its world premeire at the State Theater in Austin, Texas. “Magpie” hails from Bateman’s Werewolf Films, 55 Films and Align.
Ridley conceived the premise that drives “Magpie” and she produced the movie in addition to limning the central role. Ridley plays Annette, a tightly wound woman with two young children who struggles while watching her creepy husband (Shazad Latif) descend into an affair with an actress (Matilda Lutz) after the couple’s daughter is cast in a movie.

Danny Perkins made waves in the British film industry back in 2018 when he left his long-time position as CEO of StudioCanal UK — a tenure that had seen him oversee major and beloved hits including Paddington 1 & 2, Tinker Tailer Soldier Spy and Shaun the Sheep Movie — to set up his own film and TV production company.
Elysian Film Group, which he launched with producer Kate Solomon (United 93), in early 2020 unveiled its distribution arm, backed by minority investment from CAA (the giant’s first investment in a U.K. distributor). The timing wasn’t great, however, coming less than a month before the first pandemic lockdown.
It was, understandably, a slow start on both the production and distribution front. But 2023 has seen the company — a nimble operation of just four staffers, including Perkins (who brings partners on board for big releases) — make some major noise. First up, it’s biggest in-house film to date,...

Kate Winslet’s latest role in “Lee” sees her collaborating with legendary cinematographer Ellen Kuras to tell the story of Lee Miller, a former fashion model who became one of America’s most important photographers on the frontlines of World War II. Winslet wasn’t afraid to get down and dirty to embody Miller and the horrors she photographed, but her involvement in the film went far beyond her performance.
In a new interview with Vogue (the same magazine that published many of Miller’s photos), “Lee” producer Kate Solomon explained that Winslet was extremely involved in the business and creative aspects of the film as a producer. In addition to helping the film obtain financing, the profile revealed that Winslet personally paid the crew’s salaries for two weeks during the shoot.

The remarkable life of war photographer Lee Miller has been a little-known tale of courage and determination, one that deserves the treatment given it by Kate Winslet, who plays the title role at the Toronto Film Festival with nuance and flair.
Miller, a photographer for Vogue in London in the 1940s, fought for the right to go to the front lines of World War II with the Allied troops, determined to bear witness to the realities of war.
But those realities were much harsher than she could have imagined and Miller ended up capturing up-close images of heartrending moments of suffering and survival – including some of the first shocking images of the death camp, Dachau.
Winslet, who also co-produced the film, plays Miller as the American-in-Europe free spirit she was, opening with a nude lunch among painter and artist friends (including Marion Cotillard) in the south of France in the late 1930s.

The red carpets and lavish afterparties that send the media flocking to the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) will be a lot less star-studded this year. That’s a necessary consequence of the actors and writers strikes that are roiling the movie business, leaving major studios and streamers without the kind of celebrity heat they typically rely on to give their awards contenders a flashy launch. But TIFF isn’t just a place to debut a film; it’s also a market for movies looking for distribution. And sales agents are divided on whether or not studios will be as willing to make a deal with all the labor turmoil.

Exclusive: Here’s the striking first official image of Kate Winslet as Lee Miller in feature Lee.
The image, shot during filming on location in Croatia, shows Oscar winner Winslet as the pioneering American photographer who covered WWII in Europe for British Vogue.
Filming is ongoing on the directorial debut of respected cinematographer Ellen Kuras (Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind).
The film is not being called a biopic by Winslet and the producers, but it does explore the most significant decade of Lee Miller’s life. As a middle-aged woman, she refused to be remembered as a model and male artists’ muse and defied expectations by travelling to Europe to report from the frontline. There, in part as a reaction to her own well-hidden trauma, she used her Rolleiflex camera to give a voice to the voiceless. What Lee captured on film in Dachau and throughout Europe was shocking and horrific.
