Clint Eastwood was already a notable movie star before directing his first film, "Play Misty for Me" in 1971. In 2021, Eastwood helmed his 40th film as a director, the gentle rescue movie "Cry Macho," in which he also starred. Eastwood would be a Hollywood legend even if he had never chosen to get into acting. Perhaps dismaying to the man's many fans, Eastwood recently announced that he will direct one final film before retiring for good. Eastwood's final film will be distributed by Warner Bros., the studio that has handled the director's entire filmography since "Gran Torino" in 2008. Eastwood's retirement is likely due to his age — he will be 93 in May — although one might hear the words of Warner Bros./Discovery CEO David Zaslav ringing in their ears when he was reported to say that he owes no filmmaker any favors and that Eastwood's films all tend to lose money.

Clint Eastwood redefines machismo in the trailer for his upcoming movie “Cry Macho,” out in theaters and streaming on HBO Max on Sept. 17.
The 91-year-old Eastwood directed the film and stars as Mike Milo, an ex-rodeo star and washed-up horse breeder who agrees to bring his former boss’ young son, Rafo (Eduardo Minett), home from Mexico. On their journey back to Texas, the pair takes backroads and encounters unexpected challenges, all while Mike forms an unlikely connection with Rafo and develops his own sense of redemption.
“This macho thing is overrated,” Eastwood says in the trailer. “Just people trying to be macho to show that they’ve got grit. That’s about all they end up with.”
“Cry Macho” also stars Natalia Traven as Marta and Dwight Yoakam as Mike’s former employer, Howard Polk. The cast also includes Fernanda Urrejola as Leta and Horacio Garcia-Rojas as Aurelio.

Clint Eastwood is planning to produce, direct and star in the adventure-drama “Cry Macho” for Warner Bros., sources have confirmed to Variety.
Al Ruddy and Jessica Meier are producing, along with Tim Moore and Eastwood at his Warner-based Malpaso production company. The project is based on the 1975 novel by N. Richard Nash, who wrote the script along with Nick Schneck.
The project was unveiled during the 2011 Cannes Film Festival, where the New York Times reported that Arnold Schwarzenegger was attached to star with Ruddy producing, Brad Furman directing and plans to shoot in New Mexico. Eastwood had once before intended to star and direct, but had put it aside in favor of 1988’s “The Dead Pool,” in which he portrayed his signature Harry Callahan character.
The Schwarzenegger project never materialized. “Cry Macho” tells the story of a washed-up horse trainer who schemes to make $50,000 by snatching a streetwise Mexican...

“Most overnight successes take about 10 years,” says Paul Walter Hauser as he sits down for one of his first major interviews after the film that has put his name on lips all over Hollywood, Clint Eastwood’s Richard Jewell, has screened for the first time. “That’s what they say. Clint Eastwood points a stern finger at FBI investigators and the media in the first trailer for his new fact-based drama “Richard Jewell,” which explores the security guard who reported finding an explosive device at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics — and then was falsely accused of planting it himself.
Paul Walter Hauser stars as Jewell, joined by Kathy Bates as his mother, Sam Rockwell as his attorney, Jon Hamm as the lead FBI investigator and Olivia Wilde as Atlanta Journal-Constitution reporter Kathy Scruggs.

Warner Bros. has given Clint Eastwood’s biopic “Richard Jewell” an awards season release date of Dec. 13.
The film stars Paul Walter Hauser as the real-life security guard whose life turned chaotic after he was listed as a possible suspect in the Olympic Park bombing during the 1996 Atlanta Olympics after having discovered a suspicious abandoned backpack. Jewell maintained his innocence throughout and was finally fully cleared by the FBI 88 days later, though his reputation was never restored and his health forever damaged. Jewell was never charged and died in 2007.
Sam Rockwell plays Jewell’s lawyer. Kathy Bates, Olivia Wilde and Jon Hamm also star. Jonah Hill and Leonardo DiCaprio had originally been attached to star (DiCaprio was originally on board to play Rockwell’s role), but are not in the movie, instead remaining on as producers. Billy Ray is writing the script.
Eastwood is directing and producing through his Malpaso production banner.

Billy Ray wrote the screenplay based on the 1997 Vanity Fair article from Marie Brenner that describes how Jewell, originally hailed by the media as a hero for alerting police to the presence of a bomb and helping evacuate the area, became linked as the FBI’s prime suspect in the Olympic Park bombing, completely upending his life in the process.

Sam Rockwell is in final negotiations to star in Clint Eastwood’s next drama “The Ballad of Richard Jewell,” sources tell Variety.
Eastwood is directing and producing through his Malpaso production banner. Tim Moore, Jessica Meier, and Leonardo DiCaprio’s partners Jennifer Davisson Killoran and Kevin Misher are also producing.
The film is a drama based on the real-life security guard whose world was turned upside down after law enforcement leaked to an overzealous reporter at the Atlanta Journal Constitution that Jewell was a possible suspect for the pipe-bombing at Centennial Park during the 1996 Atlanta Olympics.
From that moment on, Jewell went from a hero, who first discovered the suspicious abandoned backpack and saved hundreds of lives, to one of the most hated men in America.
As law enforcement asserted Jewell planted the bomb himself and then “found” it to make himself a hero, the city reopened the park and...

Clint Eastwood is headed back to his longtime home Warner Bros, which has picked up the director’s The Ballad Of Richard Jewell, the project that had been set up at Disney-Fox and that Deadline told you last month Eastwood was helming next.
The film is being produced by Appian Way’s Leonardo DiCaprio and Jennifer Davisson, who along with Eastwood have a deal at WB, making this shift in studios confirmed Friday less than a shocker. Jonah Hill and Kevin Misher are also producing along with Malipaso’s Eastwood, Tim Moore and Jessica Meier, and Misher Films’ Andy Berman.
Eastwood, who last directed Warners’ The Mule, will start shooting next month.
Hill was at one time attached to play Jewell, the security guard whose life was turned upside down after it was leaked by law enforcement to a reporter that he was a possible suspect in the Olympic Park bombing during the 1996 Atlanta Olympics.

Warner Bros. and Clint Eastwood are teaming up once again, as the studio has closed a deal to acquire the rights to “The Ballad of Richard Jewell” from Fox-Disney with Eastwood set to direct.
Eastwood has had his eye on “The Ballad of Richard Jewell” for some time, and was in talks to take on the project several years ago when it was at Fox before he eventually shifted his focus to another property. Following the success of his most recent drama, “The Mule,” the director began looking again for his next project and came back to “Richard Jewell,” which was now a part of Fox-Disney following the recent merger of the two studios.
There was a chance that the movie could have stayed at Fox-Disney, marking a reunion between Eastwood and Alan Horn, the current Disney Studios chief who worked with the filmmaker when he was the head of Warner Bros.

The story of disgraced Olympic security guard Richard Jewell has landed at Warner Bros.
Clint Eastwood, whose production company has called Warners home for decades, is on board to direct and produce the project, which he hopes to shoot later this year.
The untitled project had been set up at Fox since 2014, with Jonah Hill initially attached to play Jewell and Leonardo DiCaprio on board to play his attorney. The two remain connected to the film as producers. Tim Moore, Jessica Meier, Kevin Misher and Jennifer Davisson, DiCaprio’s partner at Appian Way, are also producing.
