Documentary Master of Dark Shadows lovingly tells how Dan Curtis's cult hit changed TV horror.
Culture
Dark Shadows was an original. The first of its kind, there was nothing on TV like it when it first aired, and nothing on TV like it for a long time after the final stake pierced its ABC network heart. This is because the man at its center, Dan Curtis, was a madman, in the best possible way. Called the “King of TV Horror,” he also made Trilogy of Terror, Burnt Offerings, television adaptations of Frankenstein and Bram Stoker's Dracula, as well as the series Kolchack: The Night Stalker. Curtis defined TV horror for a generation.
Narrated by Ian McShane (Deadwood), the new documentary Master of Dark Shadows is more a tribute to the man who went on to make his mark with the ultra-expensive but super-successful Winds of War than the series itself.

Warner Bros did what any smart corporate giant would do when a remake of an old classic hits the big-screen and Blu-ray / DVD. They released the original films in its shadows. In this case, it was literally Dark Shadows.
It's common knowledge critics and moviegoers didn't care for Tim Burton's version of the 1960's gothic horror soap opera. From the outset, Warner Bros. had two potential ways they could go with cross-promoting the home video releases of the original House of Dark Shadows and Night of Dark Shadows movies with the new theatrical version.
If it was a hit at the box office they could say, "Look where the remake came from!" If it failed miserably, die-hard fans would want to see the originals again out of desperate nostalgia. Other audience members would be curious to see what they missed the first time around. Let's not forget guaranteed sales...

Cinderella (1950) Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment Blu-ray and DVD Available Now
The Walt Disney classic finally makes it high definition debut. Though it was made over half a century ago, Cinderella remains a timeless work of animation. Part of its lasting appeal can be attributed to the amazing concept art of Mary Blair, whose gorgeous backgrounds and unique color palettes help to define its iconic visual style. Though she was only credited with color and styling, her influence in the look and feel of the finished product cannot be denied. Another aspect that is often overlooked is the lovely vocal contribution by actress Ilene Woods. She brings a measured confidence to the beloved heroine and her singing voice is as gorgeous as the animation.

• Tangled Ever After Animated Short

In 1966 Kathryn Leigh Scott, fresh out of acting school and working part time as a Playboy bunny, was was cast as Maggie Evans the waitress-turned-governess on the ABC-tv cult serial Dark Shadows. In its prime, the Dark Shadows daytime series (which ran from 1966 to 1971) attracted 20 million viewers. The spooky, literate, romance and horror-driven show had universal appeal and came to be known as the program kids ran home from school to watch. Reruns and DVD releases of all 1,225 episodes have spawned new generations of Dark Shadows fans, who attend annual Dark Shadows Festivals where cast members reunite to celebrate the show’s unending popularity. During her tenure at the show, Kathryn Leigh Scott played several roles including Josette du Pres, the ghostly lover of Barnabas Collins (Jonathan Frid), who was killed at Widow’s Hill in the 18th-century flashbacks. When Jonathan Frid joined the gothic soap opera Dark Shadows in 1967, little did anyone know his portrayal of a tortured vampire Barnabas Collins would be catalyst that would launch the series into stratosphere of pop culture popularity and make the Hamilton, Ontario born actor a legend.
The actor passed away on April 14 at the age of 87 in his home town of natural causes.
Born in 1924, Frid served in the Royal Canadian Navy during World War II. He graduated from McMaster University in 1948, and the following year was accepted at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts in London. He moved to the United States in 1954, and received a Master of Fine Arts degree in Directing from the Yale School of Drama in 1957. Classically trained, Frid spent thirty years in live theater, starring in the first productions at the Williamstown Theater and stage productions in Canada, England and the United States, though occasionally working in television.

Jonathan Frid, star of the original "Dark Shadows," died of natural causes in Canada last Friday (April 13) at the Juravinski Hospital in Hamilton, Ontario.
Frid was best known for playing Barnabas Collins on gothic soap opera "Dark Shadows," which aired on ABC from June 1966 to April 1971. The character of Barnabas appeared a year into its run on TV and catapulted the show's popularity.
Frid did not do much acting other than in "Dark Shadows" and did not have an acting credit since the 1974 film "Seizure" until he filmed a cameo for the 2012 release "Dark Shadows," which features Johnny Depp as Barnabas.
Actress Kathryn Leigh Scott, who played Maggie Evans on the series, posted this message to Frid on her website:
"I am so grateful to have worked with Jonathan, and to have known him as the charismatic, entertaining, complex and plain spoken man that he was. What fun we had working together!

Dark Shadows, the gothic daytime drama that premiered on the ABC Television network in 1966, was distinguished from other soap operas by it’s presence of vampires, werewolves, witches, and ghosts. Helena in a recent interview had this to say about Dark Shadows, "a really bad, hilariously bad soap opera." Kathryn wrote a letter to the Dark Shadows News Page:"Lara Parker (Angelique) and I, who both play cameos in the new Dark Shadows film, are surprised by Helena Bonham Carter's comments because they do not at all reflect our wonderful conversation together on the set. She was eager to hear about Grayson Hall, who played Dr. Julia Hoffman, and we were only too happy to tell her about our old friend." "Helena and Michelle Pfeiffer...

For this writer one of the highlights of this past July's San Diego Comic-Con was the chance to sit in on the "Dark Shadows" panel, which included actress turned author Kathryn Leigh Scott, whose first fiction novel, Dark Passages, was recently released by Pomegranate Press. To coincide with the release, Dread Central interviewed Ms. Scott about not only her new book but also the time she spent working both on the "Dark Shadows" TV series and in the Playboy Club during its heyday. We also managed to garner a tiny bit more info on what's in store for fans of "Dark Shadows" in the upcoming Tim Burton film adaptation.
Dread Central: "Dark Shadows" began airing 45 years ago, and now all these years later there's a major motion picture based on the series on its way. How do you account for its continuing appeal to so many generations?

Fans will never forget Kathryn Leigh Scott's run as four different characters on cult-horror soap opera Dark Shadows during the show's run from 1966-1971 (Maggie Evans, Josette du Pres, Lady Kitty Hampshire and Rachel Drummond). The beloved actress will be appearing in the upcoming Tim Burton/Johnny Depp movie version of the cult soap as well. Aside from her acting career, and years as a Playboy Bunny, she's also written a number of nonfiction books and had huge success with her publishing company, Pomegranate Press.

Back in 1966, Kathryn Leigh Scott was cast as Maggie Evans in ABC's supernatural soap opera, Dark Shadows. She got to play several different roles over the course of the series and stayed with the show for most of its five year run.
Though Scott went on to act in numerous other television series, she certainly doesn't shy away from her "dark" past. She's remained active at Dark Shadows festivals and conventions, published and written books about the show, and has even authored a novel that's an homage to the series.
Scott's website describes Dark Passages as a "coming-of-age story encapsulating the romance and innocence of JFK's Camelot era and the tumultuous 'dark passages' of Meg Harrison. Arriving in New York City to pursue acting, Meg is a beautiful ingenue who also happens to be a vampire. She joins the cast of the cult...
