It’s hard to believe that another South by Southwest Film Festival is almost upon us, and this year’s lineup is yet another stellar collection of indie films, shorts, documentaries and experiential projects from all over the world. As we prepare to bring our readers extensive coverage over the next week from Austin, here’s a look at the 11 genre-related films and TV shows we’re excited to check out during the festival, which begins on Friday, March 11th.
[Writer’s Note: During Sundance 2016, this writer had the privilege of covering two great genre films: Under the Shadow from Babak Anvari and Mickey Keating’s Carnage Park. Since I had the chance to catch both of these films back in January, I decided it wouldn’t be fair to include them here in my preview piece (however, genre fans attending SXSW should definitely check out both films during the fest, as they are equally incredible).]
In a Valley of Violence (Director/Screenwriter: Ti West)
Festival Synopsis: From Blumhouse, the film tells the story of a drifter named Paul who arrives in a small town, seeking revenge on the thugs who murdered his friend. Sisters Mary Anne and Ellen, who run the town’s hotel, help Paul in his quest for vengeance. Cast: Ethan Hawke, Taissa Farmiga, James Ransone, Karen Gillan, John Travolta (World Premiere)

Congratulations are in order! Nashville's Nick Jandl is engaged to wardrobe stylist Regalia Thomas, E! News can exclusively reveal. The two celebrated their engagement at a private house in Los Angeles, where they posed for several gorgeous photos. Both the future bride and groom glow as they pose for their celebratory pics, which also show off Regalia's huge ring! Nick and Regalia met in the summer of 2010 at the behest of their mutual friend Mike Doyle, despite Nick being a New England Patriots fan and Regalia a New York Giants fan. The two agreed to meet on a blind date at their friend Lenore Douglas, who is now serving as the co-matron of honor. Adorably, Nick arrived nervous, but Regalia almost...

Last night's finale gathering was slightly epic, so excuse my tardiness with this recap. I viewed the Final Rose Ceremony with a host of Broadway and TV favorites, including Andrew Rannells, Mike Doyle, Nikki James, Zuzanna Szadkowski and Colin Donnell, as well as some non-actor friends who are willing to put up with my obsession and still come over to hang out.

‘Jersey Boys’ movie review: Great music fails to save Clint Eastwood-directed film version of the 2005 Broadway musical (photo: John Lloyd Young as Frankie Valli of the Four Seasons in ‘Jersey Boys’) Clint Eastwood’s semi-historically accurate biopic of Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons, Jersey Boys, is based on the hit 2005 Broadway musical — and it is a crushing bore. But we shall start with the positive: In Eastwood’s film, the music and the performances of the music (which are not the same thing) are great. That is to be expected, as the Jersey Boys movie cast is mostly composed from cast members of the stage show, including Tony winner John Lloyd Young, who happens to look a lot like Frankie Valli and who has a four-plus octave range. Lucky boy. Lloyd Young is also a serviceable actor with a number of (mostly stage) credits that did not require a piercing falsetto.

It’s hard to describe Clint Eastwood’s late-period directorial output without using the same words that apply to the hardboiled and callused gunslingers that made him famous. Stoic, steady, and assured are all useful qualities for someone looking to make staid historical dramas like J. Edgar, or a throwback like Gran Torino. But words like “spirited” and “energetic” are often strangers to Eastwood’s cinematic vocabulary, so asking him to make a musical was going to be a challenge from the start. When that musical happens to be Jersey Boys, a Broadway smash ill-suited for a film adaptation, both Eastwood’s and the source material’s limitations layer over one another like Frankie Valli’s voice on an 8-track, harmonizing into a 2-hour-plus slog through a dusty record collection.

If Hollywood blockbusters are currently crippled by fear of the unknown, Broadway musicals – an ever-increasing number of them based on Hollywood blockbusters – are hardly less guilty. The jukebox musical is, if you will, the Great White Way's superhero reboot: their safest gambit, removing the greatest variable in a genre that has, after all, always been reliant on existing story material. Who needs composers when perfectly good popular discographies are there for the taking? “Jersey Boys” was a swift hit when it opened on Broadway in 2005; credit zesty staging or a tidily structured book if you will, but it's a show that owes its pull to one of the most buoyant American songbooks in Top 40 history. Those creamy harmonies, those tightly syncopated choruses, that unearthly falsetto: Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons hadn't the artistic reach of contemporaries like The Beatles, nor the cool strut of the Detroit acts to which...

There are a lot of blockbuster hopefuls coming out this summer, but perhaps none of them are more risky than Clint Eastwood’s song-and-dance musical Jersey Boys, a star-studded adaptation of the Broadway play of the same name. As Rob Marshall, whose ambitious musical Nine flopped at the box office, and Adam Shankman, whose Rock of Ages only faired slightly better and never recouped its budget, can attest, movie musicals are very tough to do.
Honestly, I don’t think that Eastwood’s Jersey Boys is going to fare much better than Nine or Rock of Ages at the box office, but hopefully it will at least do a solid job of communicating the fascinating story of popular ’60s musicians Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons.

We’ve been telling you that ABC‘s new series 666 Park Avenue is dark, creepy goodness, but we have a lot to learn about the show, even after screening the pilot. Word is that we’ll be seeing a number of people moving in and “out” of the luxurious digs throughout the season.
TV Guide is reporting three of those names on the register: Aubrey Dollar, Mili Avital, and Mike Doyle. Ms. Dollar will be playing Annie, an obituary writer who wants to move beyond that niche, and whom we will be seeing in Episode 4. Mili Avital will be playing a woman who is longing for romance but has a dark secret. Ooo!
Mike Doyle is reportedly playing a character who is “a powerful adversary” to Terry O’Quinn‘s Gavin. He’ll debut in the second episode and will be a recurring character. Oh dear. We’re imagining having...

Title: Union Square Director: Nancy Savoca Starring: Mira Sorvino, Tammy Blanchard, Mike Doyle, Daphne Rubin-Vega, Michael Rispoli, Patti Lupone A half-sketched tale of familial floundering, Nancy Savoca’s “Union Square” is a suffocating and pantomimed sisterly drama that makes an unconvincing and headlong dive into sentimentality for its finale, wasting a lot of effort and investment from lead actress Mira Sorvino. The “Mighty Aphrodite” Oscar winner stars as Lucy-from-the-Bronx, a self-involved, perpetually frazzled Loud Talker who, with Thanksgiving looming, hits New York City proper for some shopping and a rendezvous with a guy she believes to be her boyfriend. Spurned repeatedly over the phone, Lucy nearly undergoes a nervous breakdown, and shows up at the apartment of her estranged sister [ Read More ]...

You’d think that the festival would start to slow down now, but it really isn't! The stars who have to get back to L.A. for the Emmy's still have tons of time to spare! Red-eye flights are all part of the gig!
Spotted yesterday looking gorgeous at the Intercontinental on Front is mom-to-be Jennifer Garner. She produced and stars in the flick Butter and has become a fan fave at the festival. She's been here several times over the past few years - in 2009 for the Invention of Lying with Ricky Gervais and in 2010 to support her hubby Ben Affleck when his movie The Town opened as a Gala. I’m lucky to have interviewed Jennifer Garner on many occasions and she's the most honest actress. She doesn't pretend to do it all and is extremely grateful for her support team. She admits that, yes, she has a...

A pair of actors very familiar with Jack Bauer will soon get to know Jim Powell.
Rick Schroder and Annie Wersching, both of whom played key roles on seasons of 24, will guest star on an episode of No Ordinary Family in early 2011.
Look for Schroder, who played CTU agent Mike Doyle on season six of the former Fox drama, to play a man whose life is saved by Michael Chiklis' powerful character on this ABC series. Wersching will portray his wife.
The latter has been keeping busy since 24 went off the air in May. She recently guest-starred on CSI and will soon be seen on an installment of NCIS.
