Dead Shack
This is a decent zombie horror-comedy from multitalented director Peter Ricq. While on vacation, three kids discover a nearby neighbor is harboring her undead family who need to be fed, and they have to save their unsuspecting parental guardians. It’s kind of a tourist trap led up by Lauren Holly as the neighbor. There’s some good humor from the father Roger (Donavon Stinson) who’s got good timing even if those around him don’t. He was the highlight for me, while the kids were all decent as well.
This is a fun little zombie flick, offering up cute comedy and decent gore effects, but it doesn’t bring anything new to the table. The biggest problem for me was a tonal shift; what’s relatively lighthearted for 90% of the movie is heavily marred by a shockingly grim finale. Worth a look for fans of the genre,...

10 years ago this June, I (Andy Triefenbach) started Destroy the Brain as a solo horror film podcast back when there were only a handful of podcasts talking about the genre. For three-and-a-half years, 78 episodes were released in a format that was dubbed “Season 1”. “Season 2” started with co-host Michael Haffner which lasted 47 episodes for 11 months. New contributors started writing for Dtb and we picked up where “Season 2” left off, effectively starting “Season 3”. Since the show has evolved hosts and formats, we have collectively made the decision to retire the show known as “Destroy the Brain” or “The Destroy the Brain Podcast” and reboot it, since that’s the hot thing to do, as a newly named show. The podcast will now be known as We Need To Talk About Horror.
Myself, Jeremy Jones, Joseph Burge and Mike Hassler will be filling your ear holes with discussions about the horror genre. We will be talking about films,...

I know that I’ve gone on record with saying that Fantastic Fest in Austin, Texas has to be one of the best film festivals our country has to offer. Sadly, there is not enough time to catch all the films I wanted to see. One film was called Men & Chicken which starred Mads Mikkelsen. It was a comedy and that meant that it went down the priority pole when it came to covering the festival for a “horror-centric” website like Destroy the Brain. However, our contributor, Mike Hassler, saw it and told me that while he thought the movie was okay, the short that was before it seemed to steal the show. The short film that preceded Men & Chicken was something called The Chickening. Mike couldn’t explain what it was nor did I think he want to. He thought that I would get maximum enjoyment seeing the short...

In two weeks, Mike Hassler and I will be in Austin, Texas to cover 8 days of genre madness. We are covering the festival by posting our written reviews of the films we see as well as, hopefully, some daily recaps. I say hopefully because covering a film festival, even with two people, is crazy. Typically hour days are from 8am to 2am every day. In the past, I think the most amount of films I saw at Fantastic Fest was 24.
Written reviews will be a given but we would like your input on how to spice things up. Should we use social media like Instagram & Facebook to give you pictures and video from the festival or even Periscope to give our raw reviews/reflections on films we see throughout the day?
If you feel so inclined, fill out the survey below and we will share the results next week!

Mike Hassler got to see this at Fantastic Fest last year and I’ve been jealous since. Now, we finally get a trailer and a release date.
In the heat of the summer lays a lonesome house in the countryside where nine year old twin brothers await their mother’s return. When she comes home, bandaged after cosmetic surgery, nothing is like before and the children start to doubt whether this woman is actually who she says she is. What ensues is a terrifying observational struggle with fatal consequences.
Goodnight Mommy will be released in theaters on September 11, 2015 via Radius TWC. Read Mike’S Review Of The Film Now! What do you think about the trailer, leave a comment below!

Full Admittance: This post was supposed to be published last week. Sorry for the late notice. Because of this, we have made the rules/hoops light.
Mike Hassler saw it at Fantastic Fest and raved about it, now you have the opportunity to check out Nightcrawler before it hits theaters on Friday. Gotta say, I’m personally very interested to see this as Prisoners, while not horror per se, was one of my favorite films of last year. If you live in the St. Louis area and are free tomorrow night, read below on how to score tickets.
Nightcrawler is a pulse-pounding thriller set in the nocturnal underbelly of contemporary Los Angeles. Jake Gyllenhaal stars as Lou Bloom, a driven young man desperate for work who discovers the high-speed world of L.A. crime journalism. Finding a group of freelance camera crews who film crashes, fires, murder and other mayhem,...

Who doesn’t love a good revenge flick? John Wick stars Keanu Reeves and all I have been told is that he shoots people point blank in the face. I’ve heard nothing but good stuff on this flick and while we already have a review from when Mike Hassler saw it at Fantastic Fest, I haven’t read the review because I want to see it fresh. Wanna see it for free prior to the release? Read on for the details!
When a retired hit man is forced back into action by a brutal Russian mobster, he hunts down his adversaries with the ruthlessness that made him a crime underworld legend in John Wick, a stylish tale of revenge and redemption set in a brilliantly imagined New York City and starring World Stunt Award-winner Keanu Reeves.

Halloween is coming and we thought with all those kids that are out trick or treating, dressing up to be grown ups, that we would give these halfstacks their due, children can be creepy as well. The staff has got together and compiled thirteen films where children are to be feared.
The Children From The Children
Tom Shankland’s film shares themes in common with a couple other “youth gone mad” films of the past, but these kids are terrifying in their own way. A virus of some sort is turning the children into blodthirsty, malevolent creatures. They still look sweet, but they’re ready to kill, kill, kill. The scary imps in Cronenberg’s The Brood are spooky, but nothing freaks me out more than a normal looking child becoming violent. Kids toys become tools of murder here, and a parent’s worst nightmare is born. This well directed...

We are three weeks away until Fantastic Fest. Kind of amazing to think about. This year, I am blessed to bring Mike Hassler with me. We will be seeing as many films as our eyeballs will see and writing as many reviews as our fingers will allow us. Take a look at the second wave announcement below and don’t forget to look at the first wave and my predictions of what might play at the fest (I didn’t fare well with the Second Wave). As before, I have included the trailers for all the films, if available, announced in this wave.
From the Press Release
Austin, TX – Wednesday, August 27, 2014 – Celebrating its 10th anniversary, Fantastic Fest is excited to announce the second wave of events, special guests and film programming. Fantastic Fest 2014 takes place September 18-25th in Austin, Texas at the newly reopened Alamo South Lamar and Highball.

It’s another 13th of the month. Here’s our top 13 list of unconventional murder weapons. All contributions are by the staff and listed as such.
Deadly Friend Death by Basketball
by Mike Hassler
Deadly Friend is not a good movie. At all. Wes Craven’s really hit or miss, in case you didn’t already realize this — for every Last House on the Left there’s a Vampire in Brooklyn, and for a Nightmare on Elm Street there’s a Shocker. His 1986 cheese-tastic gem Deadly Friend is quite a fun watch just for it’s terrible nature. The preposterous plot is of a young man implanting a computer chip into the girl next door’s brain which then gives her superpowers and causes her to go homicidal. The best moment? When our cybernetically altered hottie Samantha (Kristy Swanson) chucks a basketball at Anne “Mama” Ramsey’s head, which literally...

It’s Friday the 13th and a full moon tonight so we let the crazies loose and are bring back one of our favorite staff posts, The Thirteen! If you aren’t familiar with The Thirteen, it was initially conceived to be a Top 13 list of films about a certain topic. Sadly, we started it last September and it fell by the wayside. Read our past two posts:
13 Songs Used in Films That Take On a Haunting Feeling
13 Female Villains & Anti-Heroes in Film
Xtro
contribution by Jeremy Jones
A young boy sees his dad abducted by some unseen force. Three years later a meteor hits in the middle of the woods and brings something icky. Written, directed and scored by Harry Bromley Davenport, Xtro is a demented labor of love. The first twenty minutes are the most chunk blowing worthy moments. Including perhaps the grossest thing ever, walking in on your parents having sex.

With the remake of Carrie being released in a few days, we celebrate this month’s The Thirteen column with our top 13 female villains and anti-heroes! I have culled the staff together and picked the best of all the names given. Caution: There may be spoilers.
Angel Blake from the film ‘The Blood on Satan’s Claw‘ Played by Linda Hayden
I first saw 1971’s “The Blood on Satan’s Claw” a couple of years ago, as an assignment for a long-running podcast that had a knack for uncovering cinematic, oddball gems. I remember saying that Satan’s Claw is like watching a 90+ minute car crash; impossible to look away from. But let’s get to what makes Angel Blake a great villain.

This Friday the 13th, we are proud to bring you a new column called The Thirteen! The Thirteen will be a Top 13 list of a topic that we choose and the column will run every 13th of the month! The Thirteen is a collaborative column where we all decide on entries that fit said topic.
The topic this month: regular songs that have now taken on a haunting feel thanks to a film that used it in a unorthodox way. Now, every time we hear the song, we not only think of the film it was featured in but also get the heebie jeebies from it as well. It was inspired by Tiny Tim’s song Tiptoe Through the Tulips which was used in the film Insidious. With Insidious: Chapter 2 in theaters now, what better way to introduce this topic.
