One of the more striking details of Jeff Rowe's new animated film "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem" is that -- for the first time in the franchise's decades-long history -- the central turtles are actually played by teenage actors. Micah Abbey, who played Donatello, was only 15 at the time of recording. Brady Noon (Raphael) was only 16, while Nicolas Cantu (Leonard) and Shamon Brown, Jr. (Michelangelo) were only 17 or 18. The filmmakers also insisted that the four lead actors all be allowed to record their lines together, capturing a certain kind of sloppy spontaneity that only real teenagers possess.
In animation, younger characters -- especially those on long-running TV shows -- are typically played by adults, usually adult women. Bart Simpson, as we all might know, has been 10 years old for 35 years, and is played by actor Nancy Cartwright. Bobby Hill from "King of the Hill" was played by Pamela Adlon.

This interview contains major spoilers for "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem."
"Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem" is in theaters now, and it's another home run from director Jeff Rowe, who made waves in animation during the pandemic with the Netflix release of "The Mitchells vs. The Machines," which just so happened to be my favorite movie of 2021. So when the teaser trailer for "Mutant Mayhem" revealed another stunning display of visually unique and groundbreaking animation that promised to refresh and innovate one of the pinnacles of my childhood, needless to say I was buzzing with anticipation. So you can imagine the great satisfaction of seeing the movie in theaters and being totally floored by the innovation on screen.
Not only does "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem" bring mesmerizing animation to theaters with undeniable style, but it gives the beloved franchise a makeover by actually hiring real teens to voice the titular heroes.

Ghostface takes Manhattan in Scream VI, the latest installment in the slasher franchise. The home video release includes an informative audio commentary with directors Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, writers James Vanderbilt and Guy Busick, and executive producer Chad Villella.
Here are 12 things I learned from the Scream VI Blu-ray commentary…
1. Samara Weaving was the first and only choice for the opening scene.
Samara Weaving, who starred in Radio Silence’s Ready or Not, was the first and only choice to play Laura, the ill-fated film studies professor that serves as the opening kill. The actress has stated it’s the closest character to herself she’s ever played.
Gillett says, “We were walking to dinner in Montreal when we were like, ‘Let’s just call her and see if she’s game.'” They did so, and “she was super, super game to come and hang out with us for a few days.

Editors note: Alexis Allen Winter began her casting career in North Carolina in 2007 on One Tree Hill, and moved to L.A. in 2012 where she has worked in the offices of Laray Mayfield, Rich Delia, Courtney Bright and Nicole Daniels, Tamara Notcutt, Gail Goldberg and Sheila Jaffe, winning an Artios in 2020 for her work on To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before. Deadline asked her to weigh in on the current autition controversy involving self-tapes and how it is impacting her business.
I, like most of the casting community, have spent time reading over the latest articles on the current state of casting (and the comments on those articles). It has been gut-wrenching to read and try to digest, especially as someone who learned this industry in the Southeast, where self-tapes have been the prominent form of auditions since I started in 2007 working as a casting assistant and in extras casting.

Rebecca Hall’s “Passing” was the second most-nominated film, landing nine nominations, and Maggie Gyllenhaal’s “The Lost Daughter” scored eight.
“2021 has been a surprisingly great year for films, especially for female-directed films, as is indicated by AWFJ’s Eda Award nominees,” said AWFJ and Eda Awards founder Jennifer Merin. “Our list of eligible films exceeds 700, and we’re thrilled to see so many of them directed by women and femme-centric. No one else on this planet has accomplished what Venus and Serena Williams have. For the Williams sisters, their unmatched success in tennis is just the tip of the iceberg. And even that seems as if it should never have happened: for a pair of Black girls growing up in Compton, California, an elite sport that requires copious amounts of money, access, and time — in addition to plain old talent — shouldn’t have even been on their radar.
But as the crowd-pleasing new drama “King Richard” suggests, Venus and Serena’s parents were determined to give them (and their sisters) a better life and all the opportunities that comes with it. That drive and ambition, along with the family’s shared worth ethic, helped launch the pair into superstardom at a young age, ensuring that they will forever go down as two of the greatest athletes ever to live.

The inspiration for 2016’s low-budget sleeper hit “Don’t Breathe,” according to filmmaker Fede Alvarez, was to make a horror movie with an original storyline that used suspense in place of supernatural elements or excessive blood. In “Don’t Breathe 2,” the similarly deranged sequel, he has stayed true to those maxims, for the most part. There may be fewer truly gory moments in “Don’t Breathe 2” than in typical slasher fare, but they are just twisted enough to stick in the mind like a festering wound.
Once again employing the reverse home invasion tale, one in which the invaders hardly live long enough to wholly regret their choices, The movie’s grotesque twists may illicit more groans than gasps, but its slight sense of humor betrays a winking self-awareness. Alvarez, along with co-writer and director Rodo Sayagues, proves once again they know what genre lovers want — at least, a certain type of genre lover.

DC’s Stargirl is ready to shine on assorted screens, more than two decades after the young superhero made her DC Comics debut.
Geoff Johns, the veteran comic books scribe and screenwriter who recently served as DC Entertainment’s Cco for a stretch, created Stargirl aka Courtney Whitmore back in 1999, inspired by his late sister, who had died in the Twa Flight 800 explosion. With the character’s most prominent live-action incarnation, Johns’ vision takes on new meaning, in a series that is light, lively and abundant with star-spangled, family-friendly thrills.

"It: Chapter Two"; Cast: Jessica Chastain, James McAvoy, Bill Hader, Bill Skarsgard; Direction: Andy Muschietti; Rating: ** and 1/2
What happens when you have a wafer-thin story and want to stretch the narrative for nearly three hours? You would definitely land up with an incredulous plot with a subjective scheme.
This is exactly what Director Andy Muschietti has indulged in, in his latest, supernatural horror, "It: Chapter Two", which is based on the 1986 novel "It" by Stephen King.
Like its prequel, "Chapter Two", too is a popcorn flick built in an erratic, episodic structure with endless jump scares and chase sequences that at times work and at times feel forced. This would surely frustrate those who expect certain dynamics in drama and suspense. Nevertheless, the plot is engaging and it does quickly begin to feel like an inconsequential gauntlet that must be endured, rather than enjoyed.

The Stephen King evil-clown adaptation “It” was an unlikely blockbuster when it was released in September 2017, raking in $123 million in its opening weekend alone. That was an astounding number for a horror film with a $35 million budget, and it went on to gross $700 million worldwide. So of course there’s a sequel, which reunites the terrorized children decades later when they’re terrorized adults. But how does “It: Chapter Two” compare to chapter one?
I, for one, think it was a missed opportunity to not call the sequel “Its,” but that’s just me. As for critics, the film has earned a Metacritic score of 59 based on 43 reviews counted as of this writing: 21 positive, 19 mixed, and 3 negative. That’s a few points shy of the 69 received by the original film. Over on Rotten Tomatoes, which grades on a pass/fail scale, the sequel rates 67% fresh based on 173 reviews counted thus far,...

The promise of Andy Muschietti’s much-anticipated sequel “It Chapter Two” is in its tagline: “Witness the End of It.” It’s both the end of “It,” the eponymous alien being that took on the visage of a horrifying clown to terrorize the children in the fictitious town of Derry; and of “It,” a sprawling Stephen King-crafted nightmare that follows the plucky kids who organize to bring him down.
Despite some massive updates from the first film, including the addition of an entirely new cast of much-less-plucky adults and a vibe so dark it borders on the grotesque, this “It” is not so different than its predecessor. Still, much of the promise is held: It is the end of something, and a haltingly satisfying one at that.
Like the first film, Gary Dauberman’s script is mostly faithful to the heart of King’s story, though he and Muschietti...

Andy Muschietti’s return to Derry, Maine is accompanied by incomparable fanfare. It floated up, up and away to inflated critical infatuation and mountains of box office returns, creating an instant genre phenomenon. It’s an unfair success for any sequel to live up to, even enlisting a star-studded adult Losers cast. Could It: Chapter Two replicate the darkness, sincerity, and clown-about terror of 2017’s face-painted juggernaut? Muschietti does Stephen King proud in completion but falls short in bottling carn-evil perfection twice in one franchise (still praise).

“Mahogany” has long been regarded as a classic romantic film that has pretty much everything you crave in the genre: sex, luxurious fashion montages, and a hot couple. But you know what stops it from being a perfect movie? The ending, which finds Diana Ross as a style maven at the top of her game giving it all up to be at her man’s (Billy Dee Williams) side as he realizes his political dreams.
It’s been more than 40 years since that film’s release, and screenwriters have only recently begun to realize that a female character sacrificing herself for a man is tired as all get out. That’s what makes director Nahnatchka Khan’s “Always Be My Maybe” that much more enjoyable because it flips that dynamic on its head.

Welcome to Rumorville! Here you can learn about casting news that’s about to break in Hollywood. These speculations might be only rumors, but that doesn’t mean you can’t follow the trail all the way to the audition room. “It: Chapter Two” If you wanted more from 2017 horror blockbuster “It,” you're in luck. Both the team behind the film and the studio agreed that they couldn’t stop at the first half of the Stephen King novel, and they’re moving forward with a sequel, based on the second part of the book, 27 years later. Now, it looks like friend of director Andy Muschietti, Jessica Chastain, might be joining the next one as the grown-up version of the girl Loser. Chastain is reportedly in talks to play adult Beverly in “It: Chapter Two,” long rumored since director Andy Muschietti marked her as his first choice before the film was even officially a go.

Stay in the loop on industry and casting news with our write-up on who’s been slated for recent film and television roles! “Goosebumps 2”The dream-haunting stories in R.L. Stine’s children’s books are ready for their second big-screen release. “Goosebumps 2” has officially been put into motion at Sony. The sequel to the 2015 film will be based on the ’90s television show of the same name that featured stories straight from Stine’s various horror books. This film will feature one of the series’ more notorious villains: Slappy, the evil ventriloquist’s dummy who’s hell-bent on jump-starting the Halloween apocalypse. Three friends must stop the stuffed adversary before he ruins Halloween for good. Jack Black, who depicted the author in the first film, will reprise his role as Stine in the sequel. Rich Delia is still assembling the remaining cast for the creepy drama, and Ari Sandel has...

Adding to a list of compelling dramas and powerhouse series like “The Walking Dead,” “Better Call Saul,” and more, AMC has begun casting on its next big show and has already brought a major name on board to star. Julianna Margulies will lead the darkly comedic, 10-episode “Dietland.” This marks Margulies’ return to primetime following her successful seven-year run as Alicia Florrick on CBS’s “The Good Wife.” “Dietland,” which will be based on Sarai Walker’s novel of the same name, will follow Plum Kettle, an obese woman preparing for weight-loss surgery, who is caught between two rival feminist factions. The series will be produced by Marti Noxon, best known for her work on “Buffy the Vampire Slayer.” Margulies will star alongside Joy Nash (who will play Plum Kettle) as Kitty Montgomery, a wildly ambitious magazine editor who must play a game of master manipulation when a feminist terrorist...

That cackling noise you hear isn’t Pennywise, but New Line executives laughing all the way to the bank.
The review embargo for It has finally lifted, and the critical consensus has deemed Andy Muschietti’s reboot to be a delightful King adaptation that balances a coming-of-age yarn with electrifying horror. Which is just as well given Muschietti originally feared that his creative license would have left the legendary author none too pleased.
Alas, that’s not the case; not only did Stephen King take no issue with the plot changes made within It Part 1 – The Losers Club, but the horror mastermind was also left pleasantly surprised by the quality of Andy Muschietti’s final product. Among the review extracts below, you’ll find that Friday’s long-anticipated horror release draws comparisons to the iconic Stand By Me, while there’s also praise for Bill Skarsgård and his deeply unsettling performance as Pennywise.

Atlanta actors, listen up! Stay in the loop about what’s currently filming in your fair city (and projects that may just need an extra or two) with our weekly roundup. News on the street is The CW’s “The Originals” is rumored to be back in town. Last we heard, Go Casting of L.A. was handling principals, with Marinella Humes doing background. And lucky for you, you can apply right here! Looks like Jeremy Renner can’t stay away from Atlanta. He’s back shooting “Tag” with Ed Helms (“The Office” and “The Hangover.”) Those of you with agents should ask to be submitted for work to Rich Delia. For background roles, Catrett Locke is doing the casting. Never not casting, Rhavynn Drummer is at it again and looking for a few good people for episodes of “Step Up,” a scripted drama based on the film of the same name.

While the lead roles are filled, additional casting on the Warner Bros. project is underway with Rich Delia in Los Angeles. Gillian Robespierre, “Landline” Jenny Slate was attached from the beginning. I wrote the role of Donna in “Obvious Child” for Jenny, and when sitting down to write the next project it was a no-brainer to write another role for her. We then built the family around her with the help of two incredible casting directors, Doug Aibel and Stephanie Holbrook.
Zoe Lister-Jones, “Band Aid” Almost all the actors in the film were either friends or people I had personal connections to, so it was a relatively easy process.

The conveyor belt of superhero flicks is making its third go-round for the blockbuster “Thor.” The addition to the long-haired, half-alien hero saga is titled “Thor: Ragnarok.” Back on board for the feature is CD Sarah Finn, who, along with this franchise, has cast a plethora of other Marvel hero films. The plot for the upcoming feature will find the hammer-wielding blond returning to his beloved planetary home, Asgard, in an attempt to save it from the apocalyptic Ragnarok. Fan favorites are back for the film with a few new additions: The Australia-bound project will feature Jaimie Alexander, Cate Blanchett, Tom Hiddleston, Chris Hemsworth, Mark Ruffalo, and Tessa Thompson. Filming for the Marvel Studios project will begin in July. The characters in “Annabelle 2” may want to think about calling the new “Ghostbusters” team to rid themselves of some nasty spirits. The film, a sequel to the 2014 thriller, is gearing up for more spooks.
