Up until this week, I was predicting that “Rbg,” the Oscar-nominated documentary tribute to the wonder woman who is Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsberg would win, mostly because of its medicinal effect on our uncertain times. It gets many things right, like highlighting her nearly half-century love story with her devoted husband, Martin, her odd couple friendship with fellow Justice Antonin Scalia and her career-long dedication to fighting on behalf of women to be treated as equals in the eyes of the law.
But “Rbg’ has one major flaw that is simply the fault of Ginsberg’s profession. We can’t eavesdrop on her arguments in the Supreme Court or witness her as she delivers those scathingly brilliant dissents in real time. Basically, we rummage through her closet and see her jazzy array of jabots that she wears with her robes. And we can hear her arguments for her landmark cases over the years.

“Black Panther” wasn’t even nominated for Best Costume Design and Best Production Design at the BAFTAs, but the Expert journalists we’ve polled think the Marvel blockbuster will win both categories at the Oscars against BAFTA champ “The Favourite.” Are they right?

But the Experts have jumped ship in both cases over to “Black Panther.” There are currently 14 out of 24 who say we should expect an upset: Erik Davis (Fandango), Eric Deggans (NPR), Edward Douglas (Weekend Warrior), Joyce Eng (Gold Derby), Tim Gray (Variety), Matthew Jacobs (Huffington Post), Tariq Khan (Fox TV), Susan King (Gold Derby), Andrea Mandell (USA Today), Scott Mantz (Collider), Perri Nemiroff (Collider), Kevin Polowy (Yahoo), Christopher Rosen (TVGuide.com) and Brian Truitt (USA Today...

“Roma” may have won only four BAFTAs to those seven for “The Favourite” but this haul included the top prize of Best Picture. Multi-hyphenate Alfonso Cuaron shared in that win as well as the one for Best Foreign Language Film and claimed the other two on his own for directing and lensing this intimate memoir.
Heading into these precursor prizes, his film was already out front to win Best Picture at the Oscars. Mindful that the British academy often previews the Academy Awards, our Oscar experts from major media outlets have been busy updating their predictions. All but four of our 24 pundits are now predicting “Roma” to prevail on February 24. That support translates into leading odds of 4/1 for it to take the top prize at the Academy Awards.
Three of our Oscarologists favor SAG Awards winner “Black Panther” while one is expecting PGA champ “Green Book” to pull off an upset.

Letitia Wright had a breakthrough year in 2018 thanks to her scene-stealing role as Shuri, a Wakandan scientist and the sister of the title superhero in “Black Panther.” And she also appears in “Avengers: Infinity War.” Now we think she’ll win the Rising Star Award at the BAFTAs, which is awarded to the year’s biggest breakthrough star and is voted on by fans.
Wright gets leading odds of 16/5 based on the combined predictions of more than 1,700 Gold Derby users as of this writing. That includes the unanimous support of the Expert journalists we’ve polled thus far: Joyce Eng (Gold Derby), Bonnie Fuller (Hollywood Life), Tariq Khan (Fox TV), Peter Travers (Rolling Stone), Adnan Virk (ESPN) and Susan Wloszczyna (Gold Derby).

“The Favourite” is the most nominated film at the BAFTAs with 12 bids. And it’s full of British actors telling the (sort of) true story of a British monarch: Queen Anne (played by Olivia Colman). Surely the British academy will give it Best Picture, right? That’s what our racetrack odds say, but I think we’d be foolish to underestimate “Roma.”
It is sometimes true that the most British film wins Best Picture at the BAFTAs, like “The Queen” (2006), “Atonement” (2007), “Slumdog Millionaire” (2008) and “The King’s Speech” (2010), to name a few recent examples. But voters are often happy to pick a non-British film, especially if it’s the stronger contender in the overall awards season. “The Aviator” beat “Vera Drake” (2004). “Brokeback Mountain” defeated “The Constant Gardener” (2005). “The Hurt Locker” schooled “An Education” (2009). “Boyhood” overcame both “The Imitation Game” and “The Theory of Everything” (2014).

“Can You Ever Forgive Me?” scene-stealer Richard E. Grant has been a favorite of critics for his role as a down-on-his-luck grifter, but in January Mahershala Ali (“Green Book”) started building what may be unstoppable momentum in the Best Supporting Actor race, winning the Golden Globe, Critics’ Choice Award and SAG Award for his performance as a pianist facing racism in the Jim Crow South. But is he really unstoppable? We think Grant could beat him at the BAFTAs.
As of this writing Grant gets leading odds of 17/5, and he’s predicted to win by five of the six Expert journalists we have polled thus far: Joyce Eng (Gold Derby), Tariq Khan (Fox TV), Tom O’Neil (Gold Derby), Peter Travers (Rolling Stone) and Adnan Virk.

Alfonso Cuaron just won the second DGA Award of his career for his memoir “Roma.” Five years ago, he picked up the Best Director prize from his guild for “Gravity” before claiming that same award at the Oscars. However, he saw that film go down to defeat in the Best Picture race to “12 Years a Slave.” According to our experts, “Roma” will finally win him that top Academy Award.
“Roma” has widened its lead and is now the pick for Best Picture by a whopping 16 of our 19 pundits. Spike Lee’s “BlacKkKlansman” has the backing of just one expert while two tout Ryan Coogler‘s “Black Panther.” None of the other five nominees is predicted to prevail in the top race at the 91st Academy Awards.
That support for “Roma” gives it odds of 39/10 to take home the Best Picture award while PGA winner “Green Book” has odds of 13/2 to pull off an upset.

The Oscar for Best Original Song looks like it might be a cakewalk for Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper‘s “Shallow” from “A Star is Born.” But they face a tougher challenge in the Grammy race for Record of the Year, and as of this writing it’s too close to call. “Shallow” is tied with Childish Gambino‘s “This is America” with leading odds of 9/2. So who really has the lead? Well, it depends on who you ask.
The Expert journalists we’ve polled give the slight advantage to “Shallow.” Three of them are backing the movie tune: Joyce Eng (Gold Derby), Lyndsey Parker (Yahoo Music) and Adnan Virk (ESPN). The other two are forecasting “This is America”: Bonnie Fuller (Hollywood Life) and Glenn Gamboa (Newsday).

With the Critics’ Choice Awards just hours away on Sunday January 13, our 30 Oscar experts from major media outlets are hoping to get guidance from these key precursor prizes as to what will win Best Picture at the Academy Awards. Their votes remain split between four films, with two of these far out front of the other two.
Since being all but shut out of the Golden Globes, “A Star is Born” has seen its lead over “Roma” in the Best Picture race at the Oscars shrink. It now leads our experts tally by a vote of 16 to 10. Three of our experts are holding out hope for “Green Book,” which won Best Comedy/Musical at the Globes while one is backing “BlacKkKlansman.” [See the most up-to-date Best Picture rankings by our 30 Experts.]
Although “A Star is Born” enjoys a clear majority of first-place votes from the experts, it is not that far ahead of “Roma” and “Green Book” on our Best Picture odds chart.

Cinematographers love black-and-white movies. You can tell that by how often they’re nominated and win at the American Society of Cinematographers Awards, and by how often the cinematographers branch of the motion picture academy nominates black-and-white films. But when Oscar voters across all branches of the academy pick the winners they usually steer clear of monochromatic films and look for a splash of color. Will this year be an exception? “Roma” has been acclaimed for its black-and-white visuals by director and cinematographer Alfonso Cuaron, and the Expert journalists we’ve polled think it will prevail.
So just how cursed are black-and-white movies? Well, none have won Best Cinematography at the Oscars since “Schindler’s List” (1993) — that was a quarter century ago. You might argue that that’s just how it is since there are simply far more color movies produced these days, so you’re bound to have more color winners.

One way or another, Lady Gaga is leaving the Golden Globes with a trophy. She’s the front-runner for Best Film Drama Actress for her role as a singer on the rise in “A Star is Born.” There’s a chance she’ll be upset by Glenn Close (“The Wife”), but even if that’s the case, there may be no stopping her in the race for Best Song. According to the combined predictions of thousands of Gold Derby users, she may be the biggest lock of the night.
Lady Gaga co-wrote the song “Shallow” with Mark Ronson, Antonio Rossomando and Andrew Wyatt, and as of this writing they get leading odds of 3/1. All 18 of the Expert journalists we’ve polled are predicting their victory: Thelma Adams (Gold Derby), Erik Davis (Fandango), Edward Douglas (Weekend Warrior), Joyce Eng (Gold Derby), Bonnie Fuller (Hollywood Life), Tariq Khan (Fox TV), Susan King...

Olivia Colman has regained her lead over Emily Blunt in the race for Best Comedy/Musical Actress at the Golden Globes just in time, with final voting ending on Wednesday (Jan. 2). Our experts are predicting that the star of “The Favourite” will win on Sunday over, among others, Blunt who headlines the blockbuster “Mary Poppins Returns.”
Colman prevailed with her only previous Golden Globe bid two years ago for “The Night Manager.” That win came in the catch-all supporting performance category over on the TV side. Blunt took home that same trophy in 2007 for the telefilm “Gideon’s Daughter.” Since then she has contended for her leading film roles in the 2009 drama “The Young Victoria,” the 2012 comedy “Salmon Fishing in the Yemen” and the 2014 musical “Into the Woods.”

The Golden Globe categories for TV supporting actors are often tough to call since they combine everything: comedies, dramas, movies and limited series. But this year’s battle is so close that it’s virtually tied in our predictions: Henry Winkler (“Barry“) and Ben Whishaw (“A Very English Scandal“) both get leading odds of 71/20 as of this writing. But those predictions vary wildly from one predictions group to another.
According to the Expert journalists we’ve polled from top media outlets, Winkler is slightly out front. Seven of them are predicting him to prevail for his role as an acting coach to a conflicted hitman: Eric Deggans (NPR), Bonnie Fuller (Hollywood Life), Wilson Morales (BlackFilm), Nikki Novak (Fandango), Peter Travers (Rolling Stone), Ken Tucker (Yahoo) and Adnan Virk (ESPN).

“Vice” is the most nominated film at the Golden Globes this year with six bids including Best Film Comedy/Musical, but according to the combined predictions of thousands of Gold Derby users, that race is really a match-up between “Green Book” and “The Favourite.” So which period film will win: the civil right era buddy movie, or the comedy of (bad) manners set in Queen Anne’s court?
As of this writing “Green Book” has the slight edge. It gets leading odds of 7/2 thanks in part to support from 8 out of 16 Expert journalists we’ve polled from top media outlets: Thelma Adams (Gold Derby), Edward Douglas (Weekend Warrior), Joyce Eng (Gold Derby), Bonnie Fuller (Hollywood Life), Tariq Khan (Fox TV), Tom O’Neil (Gold Derby), Christopher Rosen (TVGuide.com) and Susan Wloszczyna (Gold Derby).

Is “A Star is Born” destined to sweep the Golden Globes? Maybe not. Though it’s still the front-runner to win Best Film Drama and Best Film Drama Actress (Lady Gaga), according to the combined predictions of Gold Derby users, Bradley Cooper has fallen ever so slightly behind in our forecasts for Best Film Drama Actor. Now it looks like Rami Malek (“Bohemian Rhapsody“) has the inside track. But it’s so close that it could still go either way.

Lady Gaga seemingly cleared a path for Olivia Colman to win the Best Comedy/Musical Actress Golden Globe when “A Star Is Born” entered in drama. But the “Favourite” star is no longer the runaway favorite: Our Experts are now split between her and Emily Blunt (“Mary Poppins Returns”).
Both stars have six Experts backing them. Michael Musto (NewNowNext), Erik Davis (Fandango), Peter Travers (Rolling Stone), Susan Wloszczyna (Gold Derby), Thelma Adams (Gold Derby) and I are going with Colman. Tariq Khan (Fox TV), Brian Truitt (USA Today), Christopher Rosen (TV Guide), Bonnie Fuller (Hollywood Life), Edward Douglas (Weekend Warrior) and Tom O’Neil (Gold Derby) are predicting a win for Blunt.
Colman is still slightly ahead overall — 17/5 odds to 69/20 — thanks to the additional six Editors and 15 Top 24 Users picking her, compared to three and eight, respectively, for Blunt.

As expected, Rachel Brosnahan made a marvelous impression on Emmy voters. She won Best Comedy Actress for the Amazon streaming series “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” when the television academy handed out its prizes on Monday night, September 17. She overcame her five fellow nominees Pamela Adlon (“Better Things”), Allison Janney (“Mom”), Tracee Ellis Ross (“Black-ish”), Issa Rae (“Insecure”) and Lily Tomlin (“Grace and Frankie”).
Brosnahan had been the front-runner all season, ever since she won Golden Globe and Critics’ Choice Awards for her breakthrough role as Midge Maisel, a ’50s housewife who takes a sharp left turn into the world of stand-up comedy after her husband abruptly leaves her for his secretary. Going into Emmy night she was far and away the favorite to prevail with overwhelming odds of 2/11 based on the combined forecasts of thousands of Gold Derby users.

The Emmy for Best Comedy Series remains strictly a two-way race, according to the forecasts of the vast majority of thousands of Gold Derby users. But not everyone agrees on which horse will win that race. The Expert journalists we’ve polled give the slight edge to “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel,” but most of our users — including last year’s highest-scoring users — think it will be “Atlanta,” tilting the overall momentum in favor of the FX series.

“Dunkirk” is ahead to win Oscars for Best Sound Mixing and Best Sound Editing, and it’s no wonder since action-packed war movies often do well in audio categories. If the film indeed wins the award for its sound editing, it would additionally make history as Richard King would set a new record for the most wins in that category.
There is currently a six-way tie for the most Sound Editing wins. Ben Burtt, Charles L. Campbell, Per Hallberg, Richard Hymns, Gary Rydstrom and King have three victories apiece, including years when the prize was handed out as a special achievement award and not a competitive Oscar. King previously won his Oscars for “Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World” (2003), “The Dark Knight” (2008) and “Inception” (2010), and he earned additional nominations for “War of the Worlds” (2005) and “Interstellar” (2014). Gary Oldman was considered a likely Oscar front-runner for “Darkest Hour” almost as soon as the first production still was released of him disappearing into the role of British Prime Minister Winston Churchill. And the prosthetic makeup that helped him disappear became an Oscar front-runner just as quickly. With Oscar night approaching that hasn’t changed, especially with the film’s victories at the Critics’ Choice Awards, BAFTAs and Make Up and Hair Stylists Guild Awards. Kazuhiro Tsuji, David Malinowski and Lucy Sibbick are the makeup and hair artists nominated for their work on the docudrama, and they’re the overwhelming favorites to win Best Makeup and Hairstyling with 1/10 odds.

For most of the awards season “Jane,” which profiles primatologist Jane Goodall, was the Oscar front-runner for Best Documentary Feature — until of course the Oscar nominations were announced. “Jane” didn’t even end up with a bid, so now the race is wide open. But based on our latest predictions leading up to Oscar weekend the race will have an unusual outcome: “Faces Places” gets leading odds of 8/15 to win, which would give director Agnes Varda a competitive Oscar the same year she won an honorary Oscar.
It’s not uncommon for an artist to win both competitive and honorary Oscars in their career, and it’s not unprecedented to win a competitive Oscar after you’ve won your honorary award: for instance, actor Paul Newman and composer Ennio Morricone have pulled off that feat. But it’s unusual to receive both awards in the same Oscar season. The 89-year-old...

But in addition, the fact that Ivory’s script is an adaptation allows him to avoid the gauntlet of Best Original Screenplay, where arguably the four biggest contenders for Best Picture are all in the running: “Get Out,” “Lady Bird,” “The Shape of Water” and “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri.” Instead, “Call Me” vies for Best Adapted Screenplay where it’s the overwhelming front-runner with 1/10 odds.

With Oscar season winding down “Phantom Thread” continues to lead our predictions for Best Costume Design with odds of 2/9. That’s not exactly a surprise since the film is all about a fashion designer (played by Daniel Day-Lewis), which puts a strong emphasis on the film’s wardrobe. Or maybe it is a surprise since “Phantom Thread,” despite its fashion-forward storyline, actually lost the Costume Designers Guild Award for period films to “The Shape of Water.” But the film’s threads are designed by Mark Bridges, who previously won this category for “The Artist” (2011), so we know the academy is fond of his work. Does he have this race all sewn up?

“Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri” just pulled into a tie for first place with longtime frontrunner “The Shape of Water” in the race for Best Picture. Of our 26 Oscar experts from major media outlets, each of these films now has 10 votes. “Get Out” still has five experts in its corner while “Lady Bird” has one backer. (See the individual rankings by experts and the resulting odds.)
This surge by “Three Billboards” has come at just the right time as final Oscar voting ends on Feb. 27. The winner of this prize, as well as the other 23 competitive categories, will be revealed live on the 90th Academy Awards that air on ABC on Sunday (March 4).
“Three Billboards” had the support of just five experts before it swept the Baftas on Feb. 18. Martin McDonagh‘s character study won both Best Picture and Best British Film, two acting awards (Frances McDormand, Sam Rockwell) and original screenplay.

“Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri” got a big boost in the race for Best Picture at the Oscars following its five wins at the Baftas last Sunday (Feb. 18). Nine of our 26 Oscar experts from major media outlets now favor Martin McDonagh‘s character study to win Best Picture at the Oscars. That is up from five votes before the British academy weighed in with their picks. Conversely, “The Shape of Water,” which won three BAFTAs including Best Director (Guillermo del Toro), fell from 12 pundits to 10. (See the individual rankings by experts and the resulting odds.)

“I hope I’m the last cisgender man playing a transgender woman,” said Jeffrey Tambor when he won his second Emmy for playing Maura Pfefferman in “Transparent” in 2016. That series arrived at a moment when the conversation around transgender representation was evolving from a call for greater representation of transgender characters in general to a call for more transgender actors to be hired to actually play those roles. Now “A Fantastic Woman” is helping to break that ground with its transgender protagonist played by a transgender actress leading the way to a potential first ever Oscar victory for Chile.

“War for the Planet of the Apes” is currently the Oscar front-runner for Best Visual Effects, but it faces a couple of disadvantages. For one, it would be the first “Planet of the Apes” film to win a competitive Oscar. But there’s perhaps an even bigger challenge: it has no other nominations. It’s rare to win this race on your film’s only bid. Only three films in the last 30 years have done it.
“Innerspace” (1987), “Death Becomes Her” (1992) and “The Jungle Book” (2016) are the only films to have claimed this prize with no other Oscar nominations. It’s good news for “Apes” that the last example was just last year, but it’s still an uncommon feat. This year there are three nominees that compete only for their visual effects: “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2” and “Kong: Skull Island” in addition to “Apes.” Meanwhile, “Star Wars: The Last Jedi...

“Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri” swept the BAFTAs on Sunday (Feb. 18), winning five awards including Best Picture. Mindful that the British academy often previews the Academy Awards, our Oscar experts from major media outlets have been busy updating their predictions. Six of our pundits now favor Martin McDonagh‘s character study to win. That support translates into odds of 10/3 to take the top prize on March 4. (See the individual rankings by experts and the resulting odds.)
However, exactly half of our two dozen experts are still backing the Best Picture bid by “The Shape of Water.” Those votes give it leading odds of 6/5. Guillermo del Toro won Best Director at BAFTA and his fantasy film picked up two other prizes (production design, score) there as well.
Five experts favor Jordan Peele‘s social satire “Get Out.” This gives the blockbuster odds of 4/1 to win the top Academy Award. And one...

“Phantom Thread” leads our Oscar predictions to win Best Costume Design with odds of 2/9. That’s not exactly a surprise since the film is all about a fashion designer (played by Daniel Day-Lewis), which puts a strong emphasis on the film’s wardrobe. And the films threads are designed by Mark Bridges, who previously won this category for “The Artist” (2011). But it would be unusual in one respect: period movies that win Best Costume Design tend to be set further in the past than “Phantom Thread,” which takes place in the 1950s. In fact, this would be the most contemporary film to win that Oscar since “The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert” (1994).
Admittedly, a few winners from the last 23 years are hard to quantify. “The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King” (2003) prevailed, but it takes place in a fantasy world removed from our real-world timeline.
