Last month, Donald Lawrence, an acclaimed gospel veteran with a half-dozen hits, attended a preview party for Kanye West’s Jesus Is King album at the Auditorium Theatre in Chicago.
“He did a song called ‘Selah’ that was rap and choir,” Lawrence recalls. “When they got to the hook, it was ‘hallelujah’s’ from an old song, very much an Eighties choir type of thing. To watch a crowd that was probably 25% African American, 75% caucasian — hip-hop kids from the suburbs — go bananas when the choir came in [was amazing]. [West] had to do the song again,...

New York — Long before she became the queen of soul, Aretha Franklin sang in her father's Baptist church in Detroit.
On Saturday, she'll headline the annual McDonald's Gospelfest at the Prudential Center in Newark, N.J. Donnie McClurkin, Hezekiah Walker and Cissy Houston will be featured.
But that's not the only event on Franklin's weekend calendar. She also has a meeting about her upcoming biopic, which has been in the works for years. Franklin says she's heavily involved in the project, including who will play her in the film. Front-runners include Jennifer Hudson and Tony winner Audra McDonald.
"I just try to come up with the names I feel are going to best present this, who are the people that will best present my biopic and what I have in mind," the 71-year-old singer said in an interview Thursday with The Associated Press.

Hartford, Conn. -- Sony Music Entertainment has settled a lawsuit filed by a Connecticut lawyer who said record company executives retaliated against him for winning higher pay for gospel music artists.
Stamford-based attorney James Walker Jr. sued Sony in federal court in Bridgeport in 2005. He claimed executives pressured some of gospel music's biggest stars, including Grammy winners Hezekiah Walker, Donald Lawrence and Twinkie Clark, into dropping Walker as their agent in an effort to reduce costs and retain control over the industry.
Sony and Walker filed a court document Monday, the day the trial was supposed to start, indicating that they reached a settlement. Terms weren't disclosed.
The company doesn't comment on litigation, a spokeswoman for New York-based Sony Music Entertainment, Liz Young, said Wednesday.
Walker called the settlement a victory for artists and their rights to effective legal representation and just compensation.
