Mostofa Sarwar Farooki’s Television is one of six films in the running to win best feature at the 7th Asia Pacific Screen Awards (APSAs) - the first film from Bangladesh to ever be nominated.
Television directly deals with issues of modernity versus tradition in rural Bangladesh, making it a film well worth debating within the context of the APSAs, which celebrate both quality cinema and the cultural importance of film.
Television closed the Busan International Film Festival last year. If it wins Apsa’s highest accolade it will have impressed the jury more than Omar from Palestine; With You, Without You from Sri Lanka; Like Father, Like Son from Japan; The Turning;, an anthology film from Australia and The Past, directed by one of Apsa’s most high-profile regular contenders, Iranian...

For months, critics and fans have been abuzz about Savages, the London post-punk revivalists, who made a rip-roaring American television debut last night on Jimmy Fallon. But Jehnny Beth and company are not the first London band called Savages. Nor, with all due respect, are they the most savage Savages. The Savages were the backing band of Screaming Lord Sutch, one of the great eccentrics in British rock history. The group was formed in London in the early sixties and performed for years, on and off, in a bewildering array of configurations. At various times, band members have included Jeff Beck, Albert Lee, Keith Moon of the Who, Danny McCulloch of the Animals, Noel Redding and Mitch Mitchell of the Jimi Hendrix Experience, and Jimmy Page and John Bonham of Led Zeppelin. Researching the Savages, I’ve discovered, is task that can send a man careening through a Borgesian labyrinth of mirrors.

New York — Eric Clapton's Crossroads festival has become the mecca for riff worshippers, so it was appropriate that guitar deity Keith Richards made a surprise appearance to perform with Clapton.
The Rolling Stone received perhaps the most sustained standing ovation of the night as he joined his old pal toward the end of Crossroads, a two-night concert festival at Madison Square Garden that brought together a dazzling array of guitar masters, from John Mayer to Jeff Beck to legends like Buddy Guy, and of course, Clapton and Richards.
Richards – whose Stones announced another tour earlier this month – flashed his typical wry smile to the crowd before joining Clapton in playing the blues standard and Clapton favorite "Key to the Highway. "
"Now we're gonna rock it up," Richards said before launching into "Sweet Little Rock N' Roller."
Richards' appearance was only the beginning of Clapton's hour-plus-long set, which included hits...
