On the heels of its premiere to critical acclaim at this year’s Sundance Film Festival, the film Kneecap on the Irish rap trio of the same name has been slated for release by Sony Pictures Classics in theaters nationwide on August 2, when it will open against Columbia Pictures’ family film Harold and the Purple Crayon.
The first Irish-language film to bow out of Sundance, where it landed the Next Audience Award, pic stars Naoise Ó Cairealláin aka Móglaí Bap, Liam Óg Ó Hannaidh aka Mo Chara and JJ Ó Dochartaigh aka DJ Provaí as themselves, all making their acting debuts. Others in the cast include Josie Walker, Fionnuala Flaherty, Jessica Reynolds, Adam Best, Simone Kirby and Michael Fassbender.

And nobody in all of Scotland is ever gonna bring her down. That’s the thesis, more or less, of Macbeth (An Undoing), a production from the Royal Lyceum Theatre Edinburgh now at Brooklyn’s Theater for a New Audience, that strives to do for Lady Macbeth (Nicole Cooper) what Wicked did for the Wicked Witch of the West. But Zinnie Harris’s play never defies gravity in its laborious quest to reimagine and center Lady Macbeth’s story.
Perhaps Harris hasn’t seen a decent production of Shakespeare’s Macbeth. The smart ones articulate without textual revision what Macbeth (An Undoing) goes to such unsubtle lengths to declaim: Lady Macbeth is the more powerful, ingenious, compelling character, and it’s her coolly competent ambition, not her husband’s, that motors this play. No argument there.
What especially bothers Harris isn’t the ferocity but the fragility in the original Lady Macbeth’s villainy,...

“Every word of Irish spoken is a bullet fired for Irish freedom,” says Arlo (Michael Fassbender), a member of the Irish Republican Army who learned Irish Gaelic during a stint in prison, to his son Naoise and the youngster’s best friend, Liam. It’s a phrase that would stick with the pair—who’d go on to become two-thirds of the rap group Kneecap—far more than any of the warnings they’d get from the police, or “peelers” as they unaffectionately call them, as well as members of the paramilitary group Radical Republicans Against Drugs.
Rich Peppiatt’s Kneecap follows cheeky youths from North Ireland whose passion for rapping nearly matches their unabashed hatred of the Brits and their powerful lackeys for oppressing the Irish people and suppressing the use of Irish Gaelic. Despite the verisimilitude the film garners from its risky and ultimately brilliant decision to have Naoise,...

The 2024 Sundance Film Festival has its first major sale, and for arguably the wildest feature in the lineup.
“Kneecap,” the raucous comedy biopic about the Irish rap group and co-starring Michael Fassbender, has been picked up Sony Pictures Classics, which has acquired all rights to the title for North America, Latin America, Eastern Europe, Turkey and the Middle East.
The film, the debut feature of director Rich Peppiatt and the first Irish-language feature to play Sundance, premiered on Thursday night at the Prospector Square Theater to critical acclaim, after which the band played a set at the after-party at The Cabin on Main Street. The three-piece also brought along a Northern Irish police van for a stunt ahead of the first screening.

Almost seven years to the day since it began, we’re about to give a royal wave of farewell to Netflix drama The Crown, but series six might be its most eye-opening yet, as its first part (out on November 16) deals with the events surrounding the tragic death of Princess Diana.
Some critics’ hackles might be up already after the show previously attracted condemnation for historical inaccuracies, so it will be especially interesting to see how the show covers such an emotive and important event in royal history, and just where the story ends when the final episodes are released on 14th December.
Even so, many fans will be disappointed not to see more recent events get The Crown treatment, like that Prince Andrew interview and Harry and Meghan’s very public royal uncoupling, but is it so far beyond the realms of possibility that the show might have a...

Actor James McAvoy will finally reprise his performance in the title role of director Jamie Lloyd’s Olivier Award-winning revival of Cyrano de Bergerac, with the pandemic-delayed staging at the Brooklyn Academy of Music in New York now set for April 5 to May 22, 2022.
The production, which won the Olivier for Best Play Revival for a 2019 staging at London’s Playhouse Theatre, was originally scheduled to play Bam in spring 2020 but was postponed due to the Covid shutdown.
In addition to Bam, the production’s 2022 engagements also include dates at London’s Harold Pinter Theatre (February 3-March 12) and the Theatre Royal Glasgow (March 18-26).
The new version of the Edmond Rostand classic was adapted by Martin Crimp and co-stars Evelyn Miller as Roxane.
“We’re so thrilled to welcome Jamie Lloyd, James McAvoy and this incredible company to Bam for a Cyrano like no other,” Bam Artistic Director David Binder said.

Rian Johnson got no writing done after people started suggesting ideas for the title of his upcoming Knives Out sequel
When Rian Johnson's critically acclaimed whodunnit Knives Out landed in theaters late last year, it didn't really seem like a film that needed a sequel.
Johnson had been tinkering with the concept for a long time, first coming up with the idea for Knives Out after he finished Brick back in 2005. The sublime murder-mystery tipped its hat to classic detective stories, as Daniel Craig's Benoit Blanc solved the enigma of an aging patriarch's sudden demise, and boasted a spectacular cast that included Chris Evans - fresh off his run as Marvel's Captain America - Ana de Armas, Jamie Lee Curtis and Michael Shannon. But as the story wrapped itself up in a neat little bow (no spoilers) by the end credits, surely that would be the...

President Donald J. Trump unveiled the official logo for the Space Force on Friday and was instantly jeered and cheered by Star Trek fans who say the design boldly goes beyond the line of borrowing.
Trump’s tweet unveiling the logo is another reminder that the sixth branch of the U.S. military will be an extra-terrestrial enterprise. What better model for that mission then Starfleet, the exploratory and quasi-military organization that Gene Roddenberry introduced in the landmark first episode of Star Trek in 1966?
The Commander-in-Chief was an impressionable 20-year-old when Roddenberry’s space-faring sci-fi classic premiered on NBC so it’s possible it left a real mark on him — as it certainly did with Nasa types, inventors, and scientists of several generations. But the new Space Force logo stirred an instant backlash that suggests its imagery may cling-on to Trek motifs too much.

Saturday Night Live host Don Cheadle used his clothes for political and social messaging this week as part of his duties (see the photo of his transgender support), and managed to sneak in a wry message about President Donald Trump into the closing segment.
As the cast and guests lined up for the traditional farewell, Cheadle stood front and center wearing a hockey jersey from the former Soviet Union. The televised portion cut away for the west coast, but Cheadle turned around and revealed the name of the Jersey’s owner: “Trump.”
Fortunately, the full moment was captured by social media, which heartily approved. Watch it below:

Actor Don Cheadle hosted Saturday Night Live this week, and one of the stories to come out of the show was not from the sketches but from Cheadle’s wardrobe choices between skits, which he used to make powerful political statements. When introducing musical guest Gary Clark Jr. for the second time, Cheadle donned a black t-shirt with the words: “Protect trans kids” on the front.

The Supreme Court ruled Monday in favor of a Colorado baker who refused to make a custom cake for a same-sex couple, citing his religious beliefs. Hollywood is weighing in, but slowly, with comments and retweets – like Judd Apatow’s, of the Aclu’s response that its lawyers are hard at work this morning because “This fight isn’t over until Everyone has equal treatment under the law.”
Harry Shearer, meanwhile, had a “Question for Justice Kennedy: So now an atheist baker can refuse to make a cake for a couple wearing crucifixes?”
The high court’s ruling focusing narrowly on what justices determined to be disrespect shown to the merchant’s claimed were religious convictions that prevented him from making the cake.

“Silicon Valley’s” opening credits have always been a goldmine for social media commentary, but Mike Judge and his co-creators saved the best critique for Season 5. The HBO comedy used its new opening credits to grill Facebook for allowing Russian interference during the 2016 Presidential election. The Season 5 credits change the Facebook logo to a series of Russian Cyrillic letters.
Facebook admitted earlier this year that its algorithm recommended Russian propaganda “in some cases” to certain users during the election. The company originally said 10 million people saw Russian-bought political ads on their website, but the number was later raised to 126 million.
The Facebook dig isn’t the only update to the “Silicon Valley” opening credits. CNBC broke down all of the changes to the opening credits, which now include self-driving Tesla trucks, Amazon drones delivers Whole Foods, and Uber employees leaving the company and joining Lyft.

President Donald Trump lashed out at the FBI via Twitter on Saturday night, asserting that the organization was preoccupied investigating his presidential campaign and neglected to follow up on information about the shooter who killed 17 when he opened fire at a Florida high school on Wednesday.

EastEnders star David Proud has insisted that his disabled character must not become a "stereotype" on the soap. The actor, who was born with spina bifida and cannot walk unaided, made his debut as wheelchair user Adam Best last night. His role was first announced in June. Though Proud is the BBC One show's first ever adult disabled actor, he has confirmed that its writers will not be dwelling on the issue in Adam's forthcoming plots. Speaking to The Sun, the 26-year-old commented: "The BBC scriptwriters used my independent nature to shape their characterisation of Adam. They have purposely avoided making his disability a storyline." He continued: "Adam thinks his mother's boyfriend Minty isn't good enough for her and neither is the Queen Vic up to standard.
