Do The Right Thing filmmaker Spike Lee received a lengthy standing ovation as he cruised on stage at the BFI Southbank in London to receive the BFI’s Fellowship award Monday evening.
Lee was presented the award by his Inside Man leading man Clive Owen, who described the New Yorker as a “true trailblazer” who will go down in history as “one of the most important directors of his generation.”
Accepting the award, Lee thanked his wife, Tonya Lewis Lee, who was in the audience as well as the artists he has collaborated with throughout his career, emphasizing that his decades-long career is the result of intense collaboration.
“I’ve said it before in many interviews: It’s not just me — there are many, many people, who you don’t see on this stage,” he said. “It takes a team effort. It takes a gang effort.”

The world premiere of Jeymes Samuel’s “The Harder They Fall” at the BFI London Film Festival was the hottest ticket in town on Wednesday evening, with the red carpet boasting a stream of bold-face names including the film’s stars Idris Elba and Regina King and Netflix boss Ted Sarandos.
They were joined by a host of personalities spanning film, television, technology and music, including Jay-Z, who was there in his capacity as the film’s producer (he also co-wrote the music alongside Samuel), rapper Kid Cudi, “Lord of the Rings” actor Andy Serkis, British Vogue editor Edward Enninful, former “Britain’s Got Talent” judge Alesha Dixon, fashion designer Ozwald Boateng, haute shoemaker Christian Louboutin and model Sabrina Dhowre Elba, among others.

One Oscar winner honored another on the red carpet Sunday as Spike Lee donned a custom outfit that paid tribute to the late Kobe Bryant.
The filmmaker sported a jacket of purple — or Forum Blue, for you old-school Laker fans — with gold trim and Bryant’s No. 24 on the labels, set off with a black (mamba) bowtie. He also wore purple pants and a pair of Kobe 9 Lows; that’s one of 11 signature models in Bryant’s line of Nike sneakers constructed to mirror the shoes boxers wear in the ring.
The Los Angeles Lakers legend was killed in a helicopter crash two weeks ago along with his daughter Gianna and seven others.
Longtime NBA superfan Lee has a special connection to Bryant. He directed Kobe Doin’ Work, the 2009 documentary that spotlighted the Hall of Famer over the course of a 2008 game against the San Antonio Spurs.

Adrien Sauvage is a young Ghanian-born British stylist, designer and photographer. His label is ironically titled “This is not a Suit” (ironic because he specializes in suits, like that other Ghanaian British designer, Ozwald Boateng). The below short film/campaign titled "The Art Of De" (or Dressing Easy) was created, co-written, co-directed and stars Sauvage himself. He’s usually directly responsible for his ad campaigns, I read. But I really dig this… it’s, for lack of a better phrase, cool! I love the simplicity of it (though also effective), as well as the black & white cinematography (I'm a sucker for black & white film,...

So much of the fashion world and the surrounding it revolves around women’s clothing. High-end couture gowns hold the public interest much better than a well-cut suit, it would seem. Yet the art of menswear is a highly precise and difficult one to master. Ozwald Boateng, the subject of filmmaker Varon Bonico’s documentary A Man’s Story, is one such master. He is one of the most successful tailors in the world and was the youngest ever to move onto the most elite of London’s fashionable addresses, Savile Row. A charismatic British man of Ghanaian descent, his African heritage infuses his sharp suits with bright colors and bold patterns that have helped him stand out in a sea of designers and earn enough fame to be a go-to tailor for Hollywood’s most elite stars.

From the outside, the world of haute couture often seems ridiculous, and it certainly lives up to that reputation often. But lost among the magazine spreads, photoshoots, ad campaigns, red carpet parties and so on, is the reality that it's not only a very tough business to break into, it's just as hard to maintain visibility. It bears many similiarities to the movie world in that regard, where today's hot screenwriter is tomorrow's trade paper footnote. And indeed, few figures break through from that world to become household names along the lines of Gucci, Prada or Louis Vuitton. But then again, few have the work ethic of Ozwald Boateng, the subject of Varon Bonicos documentary that stands out from the pack of similar films, if only for its honesty about the personal toll and uncertainty that comes with a career at the top of the industry. But of course, before he got to the top,...

I was scheduled to interview British fashion designer Ozwald Boateng in New York, about A Man's Story and was surprised when I arrived, that Varon Bonicos, who directed the documentary, was also in the room, working on his laptop, pretending not to be there. I should have expected him, because the documentary chronicles Boateng's life in precisely that way, with Bonicos playing the designer's shadow for more than a decade.
In the film, Ozwald Boateng, the "killer of the cut," explains about fabric, saying that "touching is also understanding" and that he wants his clothes to "enhance who the person is". "That's what I live for," says the Samurai of Savile Row.

A Man’s Story
Directed by Vanon Bonicos
UK, 2010
British fashion designer Ozwald Boateng’s career is chronicled in A Man’s Story, a documentary derived from director Varon Bonicos’ camera crew having spent twelve years tailing and accruing footage of the man at both work and play. The film’s lone strength is that there’s always a sense, thanks to the extensive footage accumulated, that the viewer is right in the middle of the action, as randomly arranged as it all seems. Unfortunately, the worth of detailing this action is never really clear.
When creating an intimate portrait of a subject, critical distance on behalf of the documentarian would seem to be vital, a quality that is not evident in Bonicos’ film. Given the level of access involved, one might expect a strong degree of insight, but the reigns of the film are very often given to Boateng himself,...

While we don’t like to play to stereotype here at Den Of Geek, it’s easy to say that high fashion isn’t our strong suit. So when a documentary comes along that offers an intimate look into the life of designer Ozwald Boateng, our response is almost sickeningly predictable: “Who is Ozwald Boateng?”
You may not have heard of the man, but you certainly know the men he clothes. Boateng’s suits have been worn - and championed - by the likes of Will Smith, Laurence Fishburne and Jamie Foxx, and his designs have appeared in films ranging from The Matrix to Die Another Day.

Shot over more than a decade, Varan Boricos's grovelling biography of the celebrated British tailor and designer Ozwald Boateng is a succession of tributes to Boateng by his mentor Giorgio Armani, Prince Charles, Richard Branson, Hollywood figures (Will Smith, Keanu Reeves and Billy Zane among them) and Boateng himself. We learn surprisingly little about his work, his development and what shapes his collections. "What makes Ozwald special?" an assistant is asked. "Ozwald's unique!" this student of tautology helpfully replies.

He changed the face of Savile Row and rescued his business from bankruptcy. But no one is more convinced of his brilliance than Ozwald Boateng himself
The rules of fashion are a mystery to me. Endlessly changing, apparently arbitrary and frequently contradictory, they seem to defy all logic – but if one common purpose can unite them, it must be the creation of image. The fashion industry doesn't fabricate clothing so much as artifice – and so you would expect a documentary about Ozwald Boateng to resemble a Mario Testino fashion shoot, less reportage than breathless homage to the designer's imperiously elegant reputation.
A Man's Story therefore came as such a surprise, I had to watch it twice. It opens with the sort of marital shouting match most of us wouldn't want witnessed by our closest friends, let alone anyone else, and invites us into a private world of calamity – a bankrupt business,...

Despite the technological might of Pixar, this Martian epic still feels closer to retro fare such as Flash Gordon or Dune. It's a cumbersome hero's journey fully of silly names, skimpy costumes and princesses in peril – stuff we've seen recycled so many times since Edgar Rice Burroughs first wrote this, it now feels laughably quaint. Still, it's always fun to see an expensively rendered alien world, even if cheesy myth-making comes with the territory.

Hardy's Tess looks a comfortable fit with modern-day India in this naturalistic drama, which takes liberties with the text but finds new resonances, as Pinto's subdued villager struggles to find happiness with a wealthy young British-Indian.

Zoolander without the laughs; A Man's Story is a corporate video about Ozwald Boateng, the proud peacock of British haute-couture, in the guise of a documentary
Ozwald Boateng, the proud peacock of British haute-couture, is subjected to some bespoke tailoring of his own thanks to this spectacularly wearing movie. Trawling though 10 years in the legend's life and times, A Man's Story shows us the bad days of Boateng, like the time he breaks up with his model wife, or remonstrates with the parking attendant who tows off his Range Rover. Happily, it also shows us the good, like the time he prances about on a catwalk or receives an honour from the Queen. It's Zoolander without the laughs; a corporate video in the guise of a documentary, unfailingly delighted to let Boateng hold forth on the glory of Boateng. "This is feeling a bit tight on Boateng," our hero grumbles at one stage,...

Adolescents learn a lot from films. So, lots to worry about there.
The big story
As teenagers Hollywood taught us everything. How to dance and sing. How to meet somebody. How to break up with them. The facts of life? Hollywood had that covered too. Like a sexier, savvier older brother with a pass to the coolest parties in town.
Little did we know, as we wound our way out of adolescence into extended adolescence, that Hollywood was dragging us into the gutter. At least, that's the colourful interpretation of a new study by scientists in Germany, who recently found that teens exposed to movies featuring alcohol consumption are more likely to drink to excess themselves. 16,000 students aged 10 to 19 from state schools in Scotland, Germany, Iceland, Italy, the Netherlands and Poland were quizzed on their movie watching habits by Reiner Hanewinkel and colleagues from the Institute for Therapy and Health Research in Kiel.

(Markus Schleinzer) Michael Fuith, David Rauchenberger, Gisella Salcher. 96 mins
The daily routine of an Austrian paedophile who keeps a young boy locked in his cellar was hardly something anyone was queuing up to see, but this challenges us, and itself, to take a look. At the same time, it thankfully averts its gaze from scenes of actual abuse. There are keen observations on parenting, privacy, power relations and more, but the flat, factual approach verges on dull, and the absence of empathy ultimately just leaves you feeling grubby. So get in line for the grimmest movie of the year!
This Means War (12A)
(McG, 2012, Us) Chris Pine, Tom Hardy, Reese Witherspoon. 98 mins
Two suspiciously close CIA buddies fall out when they discover they're dating the same woman – cue the misuse of government equipment and their own combat skills for one-upmanship. The romcom high concept is novel for a good reason: it's completely ridiculous.

The Oscars offered no surprises as The Artist dominated, Octavia Spencer and Christopher Plummer won best supporting gongs and Meryl streaked home to a best actress win

This week on Film Weekly it's all about the cut and the stitch as Jason Solomons meets British designer Ozwald Boateng, the subject of a revealing new documentary A Man's Story. Shot over a period of 12 years the documentary explores Boateng's creative and personal life.
Jason also speaks to Argentinian director Pablo Trapero about his new drama Carancho, which tells the story of a smalltime con-man and the dangerous world of car accident medical insurance scams. Playing to critical acclaim at last year's Cannes film festival, Carancho was Argentina's official entry for the Academy Awards best foreign language film, but did not make the final shortlist.
Jason is also joined by Guardian film writer Xan Brooks to review this week's other releases, including Jennifer Aniston and Paul Rudd in Wanderlust – and there's a heated exchange of views on Austrian director Markus Schleinzer's disturbing drama Michael, the story of a child kidnapping.

A Deborah Moggach book caught on film leads to Tulip Fever, and Ozwald Boateng makes a bid to dress Bond
Brought to book
In a brief scene in The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel, Penelope Wilton is pictured relaxing in the garden of the eponymous Indian hotel reading a book. A quick shot reveals it's the novel Tulip Fever by Deborah Moggach, who also happened to write These Foolish Things, upon which Ol Parker based the screenplay to The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel. It's a sweet in-joke and recalls the one at the end of Notting Hill, where Julia Roberts and Hugh Grant are reposing on a garden bench and she's reading Captain Corelli's Mandolin. This was, at the time, a nod to Notting Hill director Roger Michell's proposed next film – he was slated to direct the Louis de Bernières bestseller. However, illness meant Michell had to drop out and...

Trailers are an under-appreciated art form insofar that many times they’re seen as vehicles for showing footage, explaining films away, or showing their hand about what moviegoers can expect. Foreign, domestic, independent, big budget: I celebrate all levels of trailers and hopefully this column will satisfactorily give you a baseline of what beta wave I’m operating on, because what better way to hone your skills as a thoughtful moviegoer than by deconstructing these little pieces of advertising? Some of the best authors will tell you that writing a short story is a lot harder than writing a long one, that you have to weigh every sentence. What better medium to see how this theory plays itself out beyond that than with movie trailers? Taped Trailer I, like many other boys, went through a Patrick Dempsey phase when I was younger. It all started with Can't Buy Me Love...

A look at the meteoric rise to fame of fashion designer Ozwald Boateng.
With a Savile row shop when he was still in his twenties, Ozwald Boateng quickly found his place in the fashion world. His sharp-cut suits and vivid colours dragged men's couture kicking and screaming into the 21st century and no-one looked better in them than the man himself - at a slender six foot four, one of few top designers who could as easily be a model. His grace, energy and passion have made him stand out in an industry known for its jadedness. As such, he's a great subject for a documentary - so it's...

Elton John hosted another highly successful Grey Goose Winter Ball in the heart of Battersea Park in London on Saturday night.
This year’s Winter Ball – which once again benefitted the Elton John AIDS Foundation – featured the first ever elBulli experience on UK soil. elBulli has been ranked the world’s number one restaurant a record five times. Its chefs are pioneers in a new way of experiencing taste, stripping food back to a molecular level, isolating components and then rebuilding to their own design or vision.
Among the guests who were scheduled to attend included Sir Elton’s partner, David Furnish, along with Jonathan Saunders, Marc Quinn, Plan B, Graham Norton, Kelly Rowland, Joe Jonas, David Walliams, Benedict Cumberbatch, Michelle Dockery, Tali Lennox, Nicole Scherzinger, Julia Restoin-Roitfeld, Jaime Winstone, Giles Deacon, Dinos Chapman, Marcus Wareing, Johnny Vaughan, Lulu, Alfie Boe, Ozwald Boateng, Nick Candy and Holly Valance.

For those of you who have been following me on Facebook and on Twitter (thank you!), you’ve probably noticed that I’ve gone slightly mad over the fact that a new season of Project Runway is beginning this summer season!
Though of course I am looking forward to my front row seat on the beach during the “eye candy” matinee during the day, there’s nothing like getting together with your girly-boys on a nice relaxing night, sipping on wine and watching some fierce Lifetime competition on and off the runway.
Obviously, I highly enjoy watching truly talented designers showing off their craft by creating something completely stunning out of almost nothing. And in today’s fashion world, there is a surge of talented designers far beyond the realty television realm that have made a name for themselves in this industry.
With all this talk about design, runway, and sipping on wine,...

Adrien Sauvage is a young “It” Ghanian-born British stylist, designer and photographer. His label is ironically titled “This is not a Suit” (ironic because he specializes in suits, like that other Ghanaian British designer, Ozwald Boateng). The below short film/campaign titled The Art Of De (or Dressing Easy) was created by and stars Sauvage himself. He’s usually directly responsible for his ad campaigns, I read. But I like this… it’s, for lack of a better phrase, cool! I immediately thought of Jorgen Leth’s short film The Perfect Human.
Here’s Sauvage’s film (underneath it is Leth’s The Perfect Human if you haven’t seen it); h/t Kiss My Black Ads for the tip:...

For contemporary set spy thriller The Tourist starring Angelina Jolie and Johnny Depp, Oscar winning costume designer Colleen Atwood took a break from historical and fantasy to create a modern yet playfully retro collection of gorgeous gowns and impeccable suits. We asked her a few questions about the film’s lavish look and how it evolves throughout.
Playing classy mystery woman Elise Ward, Angelina Jolie dons twelve outfits in total, most created from the ground up by Colleen Atwood and inspired by current or vintage pieces. The soft, fitted grey dress she wears was actually a Charles James original. Her shoes, towering heels mostly, were all Salvatore Ferragamo.
Floor length in draped silk, Elise’s sumptuous white evening dress was an original design. Jewellery was provided by Angelina...

When fashion designer Ozwald Boateng decided, back in 1998, to allow a director to film him for six months, he had little idea of what he was setting in motion. In the end, the director followed him around for 12 years. In that time, Boateng became the youngest man to open his own store in the Savile Row area of tailors and was also made creative director of menswear at Givenchy. Indeed, filming only finished at the end of September when Boateng presented his latest London show, A Man's Story, at Fashion Week in Leicester Square.

Directed by Varon Bonicos (who also created the TV series "House of Boateng"), the documentary "A Man's Story" spans an epic dozen years in the life of its subject, designer and larger than life fashion world figure Ozwald Boateng. The youngest and first black tailor to open a shop on London's Savile Row, Boateng starts the film in 1998 at a low point, having lost his business in the midst of a tough divorce. "A Man's Story" treks through the next decade-plus at a breakneck pace, charting Boateng's stint at Givenchy, his marriage, the birth of his two children, his second divorce, his celebrity-studded charity event in Ghana, fashion shows in Milan, in Paris, in London, trips to China, Russia, Los Angeles, Doha, runways, red carpets, offices, storefronts, parties, planes. It's a glittering blur throughout which Boateng remains tireless, both in his work and as a careful curator of his personal brand.

The film will make its worldwide debut later this month, the 20th of October, at the Abu Dhabi Film Festival. After that? Who knows. But it should play in a few stateside film festivals.
I’m interested enough, and will definitely check it out if it comes my way.

London is wrapping up their fashion week, and the fashionable crowds are moving on to Milan. London finished up their last collections for menswear on September 22.
Menswear Day, traditionally the last day of London Fashion Week, featured Ozwald Boateng, who is the Savile Row celebrity tailor, Topman Bfa nominee E.Tautz and J.W. Anderson. Anderson's latest collection was just bought by Liberty.
This was the second season Topman showed separately from the Man umbrella, which it sponsors. Now in its 11th season, the Man event showcases three up-and-coming designers each year during London fashion week. Yesterday's most successful show was Felipe Rojas Llanos, who showed men's sculptural silhouettes, shiny fabrics and voluminous coats.
September 22 was also the start of Milan's fashion week, and the first collections shown were from Gucci and Alberta Ferretti, while Fendi, D&G and Prada are scheduled for September 23. Other highlights include Versace, Bottega Veneta,...

Euan Ferguson meets Bafta-nominated Andy Serkis as he gets suited and new booted for the big night
Andy Serkis is in an ineffably charming mood, but who wouldn't be? We are deep inside the warm caves of Ozwald Boateng's Savile Row fitting rooms, all dark chocolate wood and smoking mirrors, and two busy young gentlemen are prepping him for his Bafta dinner-suit. (He goes for a high-notch lapel, single-button short straight jacket, rather than the tails; I tell him it makes him look taller. He beams, hugely, flashes a double thumbs-up.) Tonight he'll take it to Covent Garden, where he's widely tipped to win the best actor award for his portrayal of Ian Dury in Sex & Drugs & Rock & Roll. Tomorrow it's straight on the train to Edinburgh, to film a "romantic black comedy about Burke and Hare" with Simon Pegg, directed by John Landis of Blues Brothers fame.
It's Serkis's moment,...
