Mumbai, Feb 22: Former Bollywood actress Somy Ali, who now leads a non-profit organisation, says she has experienced domestic violence at home and it is important that the taboo against speaking out against such as ill practice is busted.
"I witnessed a great deal of domestic violence in my home as well as my mom's friends showing up with bruises quite often. It was an accepted norm. As a survivor myself, it was necessary to take a stand against many issues, particularly, injustice committed against women, children, and men under the guise of cultural norms," Somy informed.
Somy Ali's Ngo works towards rescuing men, women, and children from domestic violence and has been working non-stop since 2007.
"We will only be able to grow more and save more lives if we educate the world on the stigma attached to speaking about domestic violence and sexual abuse of children. As a society,...

Heard was last spotted at the fourth annual Unite4:Humanity gala on April 7, walking the red carpet at the Beverly Wilshire Four Seasons Hotel.
She was at the event to receive an award for her humanitarian work with the American Civil Liberties Union (Aclu) — but had to leave before accepting the honor.

Amber Heard attended the Unite4:Humanity gala at the Beverly Wilshire Four Seasons Hotel on Friday, where she was honored with a humanitarian award for her work with the American Civil Liberties Union.
But, before the 30-year-old actress could accept her big award, Heard abruptly left the event. Leaving her friends, iO Tillett Wright and model Cara Delevingne to accept the award on her behalf.
“Amber Heard had to leave early due to an emergency,” a spokesperson for Unite4:Humanity told Et on Saturday. “Her friends Cara Delevingne and iO Tillett Wright graciously accepted the award on her behalf. We know Amber would have loved to stay through the show and hope she is doing well.”
According to E! News, Wright took a moment to explain Heard’s departure to those in attendance.

Amber Heard was honored at the fourth annual Unite4:Humanity gala on Friday for her humanitarian work with the American Civil Liberties Union (Aclu) — but had to leave the event before accepting the award.
The 30-year-old actress walked the red carpet at the Beverly Wilshire Four Seasons Hotel earlier in the night, posing for photographers in a pair of black pants and a white blouse with a black bow.
Inside the dining room of the hotel, she sat at a table with friends Cara Delevingne, photographer iO Tillett Wright and sister Whitney Heard – but appeared to be visibly upset about something.

Friday night is “Real Time With Bill Maher” night for us, and this week (May 15 10-11 Pm live Et/tape delayed Pt) sees Bill host the always fascinating women’s rights activist Ayaan Hirsi Ali as the top-of-show interview guest.Ayaan Hirsi Ali, the Somali-born activist who once called Islam a “nihilistic cult of death,” has warned Americans that honor killings and mutilations, so commonplace in the Islamic world, are happening right here in the USA. Hirsi Ali’s latest book, “Heretic: Why Islam Needs a Reformation Now” (Harper) she argues that Islam needs to eradicate the elements she believes promote violence, and make it […]...

I have been engrossed for the last week in Infidel, an autobiography that chronicles the life and times of political activist Ayaan Hirsi Ali and how she became who and what she is. Ms. Ali will be familiar to those readers of this column, who, like me, strive to never miss an episode of HBO’s Real Time with Bill Maher and MSNBC’s Hardball with Chris Matthews. She has also appeared on Fox News, CNN, and just about every news organization around the world – though I don’t know if she has ever been invited onto Al-Jazeera, even here on the U.S. version.
But if not, here’s a short version of Ms. Ali’s biography. Born into a traditional Muslim family in Somalia in 1969, her father was Hirsi Magan Isse, a leader of the Somali Salvation Democratic Front and who was actively involved in the Somalian Revolution against the Siad Barre government.

When their discussion turned to Abramson's commencement speech at Wake Forest University this week, Coulter said he found the speech "funny" and was glad she gave it. But she was "a little appalled" that Abramson only decided to cancel another commencement speech at Brandeis University after she lost her job, and not after the school revoked an honorary degree for Islam critic Ayaan Hirsi Ali.

Did you catch Josh Fox on "Real Time with Bill Maher" Friday night? The citizen journalist threw down with Ivy elite economist Niall Ferguson, who questioned his credentials and veracity of the science used for his Gasland documentaries. Ferguson, interestingly, is married to frequent "Real Time" guest Ayaan Hirsi Ali, the Somali-Dutch-American feminist and atheist activist, writer and politician. Always a great guest on Maher's panel. Fox finally had had enough with Ferguson's dissection of his motives saying, .I don.t think I.ve been able to talk once without you coming in.. .You.ve said far more,. Ferguson retorted. .You know what? You had vastly more air time than you deserve.. Well, there's two sides to the fracking camp, and the Gop...

Rushed column tonight because I was out buying books to get me through these upcoming months when TV is going to just suuu-uuhhh-uuchkk for a long time. Here's your Tuesday night:
8:00pm: "America's Got Talent" on NBC. Fifth season premiere. I've seen enough of this show to say that, judging by the people who end up on the show, no. No it does not.
"Hell's Kitchen" on Fox. Seventh season premiere.
"Wipeout" on ABC. Two hour special presentation.
9:00pm: "Glee" on Fox. Starting at 8:59, technically, because apparently there's not enough of "Hell's Kitchen" to fill a full freaking hour of TV.
"Deadliest Catch" on Discovery
"One Big Happy Family" on Tlc. Second season premiere.
9:30pm: "One Big Happy Family" on Tlc
10:00pm: "20/20" on ABC. One hour special presentation.
"9 by Design" on Bravo. First season finale.
"Ashes to Ashes" on Bbca
"The Hills" on MTV
"Jersey Couture" on Oxygen.

Earlier this week Ayaan Hirsi Ali was on Tavis Smiley's PBS show to discuss her new book, Nomad: From Islam To America, A Personal Journey Through The Clash Of Civilizations. In a back and forth about Islamic extremists, Hirsi Ali mentioned how some Muslims believe that "killing other people is a great thing to do," to which Smiley shot back that Christians are more violent, saying "Oh, Christians, every day, people walk into post offices, they walk into schools, that's what Columbine is."...

As mentioned before, Ayaan Hirsi Ali will be in Ottawa on June 10, as part of the Ottawa International Writers Festival. The event coincides with the publication of her third book, "Nomad," which is primarily a charting of her alienation from the Muslim faith she grew up in. The Globe and Mail's reviewer, Theodore Dalrymple, is, on the whole, very positive and notes that she states her case "with both modesty and great eloquence." His sole caveat is that "the Enlightenment ideal that she espo...
