L.A. Law not moving forward at ABC was one of the surprises of this pilot season.
ABC boss Craig Erwich told Deadline that “unfortunately the pilot just did not come together as we had hoped it would.”
ABC Upfront 2022: Deadline’s Complete Coverage
The reboot, which was headlined by Blair Underwood, reprising his role as attorney Jonathan Rollins, had a high bar to hit with big expectations. The original series’ Corbin Bernsen also reprised his role as Arnie Becker in the pilot alongside Hari Nef, Toks Olagundoye, Ian Duff, John Harlan Kim and Juliana Harkavey, and Kacey Rohl.
The pilot was written by Marc Guggenheim and Ubah Mohamed and directed by Anthony Hemingway.
It followed the law firm of McKenzie Brackman — now named Becker Rollins — as it reinvented itself as a litigation firm specializing in only the most high-profile, boundary-pushing and incendiary cases.

ABC has passed on its half-hour pilot Josep, starring comedian Jo Koy. While ABC is not proceeding with the existing pilot, the network brass want to get a comedy headlined by Koy on the air. The hope is to redevelop the idea, which is built around Koy playing a character loosely based on himself. It is too early to say whether that will happen and whether the current creative team will remain involved but the intent is to stay in business with Koy.
The 20th TV-produced Josep, which is said to have had funny moments but didn’t quite deliver as a whole, followed the comedian as a recently divorced Filipino American nurse attempting to navigate dating, fatherhood and a very Filipino mother who loves to “help.”

When “Fresh Off the Boat” premiered in 2015, only a handful of shows with a predominantly Asian American cast had ever aired in primetime — and none of them lasted long. But the success of that ABC sitcom, which spanned six seasons, 116 episodes and made it to syndication, finally inspired a long-overdue boom in series and films featuring Asian American leads — including “Doogie Kamealoha, M.D.,” from “Fresh Off the Boat” producing partners Jake Kasdan and Melvin Mar.
“Fresh Off the Boat” may have ended, but Kasdan and Mar — who have been based at 20th TV for more than a dozen years — are continuing to lead TV’s expansion in Asian American and Pacific Islander representation. As Aapi Heritage Month coincidentally gets underway this May, Kasdan and Mar currently have eight active TV and film projects, all showcasing different elements of the vast Aapi experience.

Pretty Smart starred Emily Osment as Chelsea a high-brow, Harvard-educated intellectual and aspiring novelist — who after getting unexpectedly dumped by her boyfriend was forced to move in with her bubbly, carefree, not-so-intellectual West Coast sister, Claire (Olivia Macklin), and her three lovably eccentric, not-so-intellectual roommates: Grant (Gregg Sulkin), a distractingly handsome personal trainer, Solana (Cinthya Carmon), a former lawyer turned healer, and Jayden (Michael Hsu Rosen), a social media influencer. Progress continues to be incremental in front of and behind television cameras in Hollywood. An October 2021 UCLA Television Diversity study examined 461 scripted television shows airing or streaming during the 2019-20 season. It revealed that only 32.1 percent of scripted broadcast network shows, 28.1 percent on cable TV, and 26.8 percent on streaming platforms, featured majority non-white casts. Each category saw an increase of roughly 2-3 percent over the previous season. In summary, despite popular claims of a “renaissance” for Bipoc creatives in Hollywood (especially for African Americans), there’s still much work to be done on the matter of inclusion in all job areas.
As their study states, the Bipoc group is not proportionately represented to their share of the U.S. population, even though audience interest in programming with talent that represents the nation’s diversity, continues to increase.
When Bipoc narratives are controlled by non-bipoc creatives, character story lines may lack authenticity,...

Diversity and authenticity in storytelling have always been critical, but only in recent years has Hollywood seemed to take notice.
Throughout most of the history of American film and television, stories of people of color were more often than not told through the lens of a white creator. Many have sounded the alarm for years that by doing things this way, the nuance and culture of those being portrayed is lost or misrepresented. In recent years there has been some progress, though there is still a long way to go, in part because the number of white writers and producers who are signing multi-year deals still greatly outweighs the number of people of color who are put in such prime positions.
“They are our stories to tell, first and foremost,” says “Insecure” co-creator Issa Rae. “There has been a history of other people representing who we are to the public,...

As Disney Plus continues down the road of rebooting and reviving as many nostalgic properties as possible — a road well-traveled and highly polished thanks to savvy spins like “The Mighty Ducks: Game Changers” and “High School Musical: The Musical: The Series” — it’s hard to begrudge the strategy when it produces something as sweet as “Doogie Kamealoha, M.D.” More than 30 years after “Doogie Howser, M.D.” first premiered on ABC, starring a teenaged Neil Patrick Harris as the iconic child doctor, Disney Plus has debuted its own thoroughly wholesome version with a Doogie as sunny as Harris’ was self-serious.
In Kourtney Kang’s update, Lahela “Doogie” Kamealoha (the very charming Peyton Elizabeth Lee) is a 16 year-old Hawaiian girl who loves the beach, her family, and a cute surfer (Alex Aiono) who doesn’t make her feel too weird about being a doctor prodigy. ‘Doogie Kameāloha, M.D.’ Boss on Bringing ‘Doogie Howser’ and TikTok — But Not Covid — Into Her Show
When Kourtney Kang was first thinking about how she could reimagine “Doogie Howser, M.D.,” she didn’t rule out any possibility. One idea was to have the original Doogie (Neil Patrick Harris) be the head of the hospital now, and the new show would center around his teenage daughter. In the end, Kang decided on a reboot, rather than a continuation series, but she stuck with the idea of having the new Doogie deal with a parent for a boss.
In “Doogie Kameāloha, M.D.,” which launches Sept. 8 on Disney Plus, the titular 16-year-old doctor’s real name is Lahela (played by Peyton Elizabeth Lee), and she works at a Hawaiian hospital under her mother, Dr. Clara Hannon (Kathleen Rose Perkins).
“It’s already hard for a mother to keep a 16-year-old daughter close to her and also having to navigate a working relationship felt interesting to us,” Kang tells Variety.

Doogie Howser creator Steven Bochco may not be around to see his story of a medical prodigy find new life with Disney+’s Doogie Kamealoha M.D., but the creative team continues to sing his praises.
During ABC’s TCA panel on Thursday, Doogie Kamealoha M.D. creator Kourtney Kang joined stars Peyton Elizabeth Lee, Kathleen Rose Perkins and Jason Scott Lee, along with EPs Dayna Bochco, Jesse Bochco, Jake Kasdan and Melvin Mar to chat about Steven Bochco’s legacy. Disney’s upcoming “Doogie Howser” reboot may be set partially in a hospital, but don’t expect to see Covid-19 make an appearance.
“It was definitely a question early on,” showrunner Kourtney Kang said during a Television Critics Association press tour panel on Thursday when asked about how the show navigated the decision to represent the pandemic. Ultimately, the producers decided an escapist approach was most appropriate for the family-friendly Disney+ series.
“Our show is so hopeful and escapist and so uplifting that having this magical world where we don’t have to touch on that felt like the right decision,” she said. “We were all in agreement early on that that was the way to go.”
Set to premiere on Sept. 8., “Doogie Kamealoha, M.D.” stars “Andi Mack” alum Peyton Elizabeth Lee as Lahela “Doogie” Kameāloha, a mixed-race 16-year-old girl, juggling a budding medical career and life as a teenager.

One of the last things Steven Bochco did before he died in 2018 was to give his blessing to Disney+’s remake of one of his (many) seminal TV shows, “Doogie Howser.”
The new version gender-swaps the title role, with Peyton Elizabeth Lee portraying Lahela “Doogie” Kameāloha. The series, titled “Doogie Kameāloha,” is being executive produced by Bochco’s son, Jesse and widow, Dayna.
Jesse said that his dad gave him that final push he needed to go ahead with the remake. “Literally in the last days of my dad’s life, my dad’s like — and he was never one to repeat himself — but he said you have something here, and they’re yours. So go do it,” Bochco said Thursday during the Television Critics Association press tour.

Fans of ’80s TV who were hoping to see “Doogie Howser, M.D.” star Neil Patrick Harris make an appearance on Disney+’s upcoming reboot of the show will have to make peace with the fact the producers couldn’t get the former child star onto the first season of “Doogie Kamealoha, M.D.”

Netflix has ordered a comedy series that will star Gregg Sulkin and Emily Osment.
The untitled sitcom is from Kourtney Kang, Doug Mand and Jack Dolgen, with Pamela Fryman on board to direct. Netflix ordered 10 half-hour episodes. Mand and Dolgen will write the script.
The project centers on a snooty, self-proclaimed intellectual (Osment) who is forced to move in with her care-free sister and her sister’s lovably eccentric friends, including Grant (Sulkin).
Osment’s Chelsea is an Ivy league educated intellectual who is book-smart and quick witted but lacks the real world skills she needs to have a functional life. She finds herself living in L.A. without any options other than her bubbly sister, Claire, and Claire’s roommates.
Sulkin’s Grant is romantic, genuinely sweet, and an often shirtless personal trainer. He has a childlike curiosity about the world and is the kind of guy women love and men…...

Neil Patrick Harris still has a big item on his bucket list that he’s “dying” to do — he wants to be in a superhero movie. “Big scale, CG elements, like a big, large movie,” the Tony and Emmy winner tells me on today’s episode of the “Just for Variety” podcast. “Like it could be Chris Nolan large, could be PlayStation 5 large. Like some kind of big where you’re doing wires.”
Years ago, Harris auditioned to play Nightcrawler in the second X-Men movie, 2003’s “X2: X-Men United.” “I remember being in the audition room on my haunches,” Harris says, adding, “I remember feeling insecure in my own skin at that time to be heroic and animalistic at the same time.” The part eventually went to Alan Cumming.
