Now that it’s officially July, I am preparing for one of my favorite holidays - Jaws Day. Some people celebrate Independence Day, but I choose to use the time to celebrate the release of one of my very favorite films. It’s a summer movie, an epic adventure, and a terrifying piece of horror. I watch it every July the 4th, without fail. It’s the main event of the day, and I’ll usually pepper in other summer horror around the edges, but ultimately, it’s all about Jaws.
This year, I also had the privilege of augmenting that celebration with a new addition to the Jaws cannon - a performance of the brand new musical, Bruce. Produced by the Seattle Repertory theater and directed by Donna Feore, I got in on the world premiere run of a new play. A musical (!) about the production (!!!) of my favorite...

The Seattle world premiere of the Jaws-inspired stage musical Bruce has reeled in its Steven Spielberg: The Tony-nominated actor Jarrod Spector will play the young filmmaker circa 1974 as he confronts various challenges while directing what would become the most ferocious of all summer blockbusters.
Not least of those challenges: the “highly dysfunctional mechanical star named Bruce,” as the musical’s synopsis states, referring to the robot shark that made filming a nightmare.
Based on The Jaws Log, a 1975 nonfiction behind-the-scenes account of the film’s production by Jaws co-screenwriter Carl Gottlieb, the musical, directed and choreographed by Stratford Festival’s Donna Feore, begins previews at Seattle Rep’s Bagley Wright Theater on May 27, with opening night set for June 8. The engagement runs through June 26.

Tony Award-nominated actor Chad Kimball, among Broadway’s first wave of performers to contract the coronavirus last spring, is finding little support among his Broadway colleagues after he pledged to “respectfully disobey” Washington State Covid-19 guidelines limiting religious services and participation.
Kimball, a Seattle native, star of the hit, now-suspended, Broadway musical Come From Away and Tony-nominated for his performance in 2011’s Memphis, tweeted his opposition to Washington Governor Jay Inslee’s newly announced wide-ranging anti-covid restrictions that, among other measures, limit religious services to 25% indoor occupancy or no more than 200 people, with face coverings required at all times.
Kimball, who became sickened with Covid-19 last March, took particular issue with Inslee’s restrictions on singing during religious services. Under the new guidelines, “no choir, band, or ensemble shall perform during the service. Vocal or instrumental soloists are permitted to perform, and vocal soloists may have a single accompanist.”

The Cher Show is packed with so much of her that it takes three talented actresses to portray the 72-year-old legend. The Broadway musical also depicts many characters from Cher’s life — Phil Spector, Greg Allman, Robert Altman, Rob “The Bagel Boy” Camilletti and her mother Georgia Holt (played with hilarity by Emily Skinner) — but some have noted that Cher’s son, Chaz Bono, is mainly absent on stage. That doesn’t mean that he isn’t mentioned. In fact, he is referred to by his name in the musical — even as a baby,...

Kim Kardashian would never waver from Kanye West's side... even if it means admitting when he's in the wrong. E! News' Nina Parker asked the reality TV star to clear the air on her husband's behavior during opening night of The Cher Show, which drew criticism from the Broadway production's very own stars. Actor Jarrod Spector accused Kanye of being glued to his phone during the show, prompting the rapper to issue a heartfelt apology for his "lack of etiquette." So what's Kim's take on the accidental snafu? Turns out 'Ye was actually so moved by the musical, he couldn't help but put pen to paper. (Or fingers to notes app, that...

Kanye West is making headlines again — but this time it’s not for weird late night rants, his Maga cap, or his insightful thoughts on slavery. It’s for causing a small disruption during the new Broadway musical The Cher Show.
The disruption wasn’t that big of a deal. West — or Ye, as he now likes to be called — was spotted in the audience on his phone during the openinig night of the musical about the life and career of the icon. Even so, it wasn’t at the level of Madonna texting during Hamilton. In fact, both sides were fairly courteous.
Jarrod Spector, who plays Sonny Bono in the musical about the life and career of the icon, took to Twitter to politely call out West (with a little bit of shade) about his phone usage during the show. “Hey @kanyewest so cool that you’re here at @TheCherShow!

It’s been a pretty big week on the Cher front. Not only did she receive the Kennedy Center Honors alongside Philip Glass, Reba McEntire, Wayne Shorter and the creators of Hamilton, but her Broadway musical The Cher Show opened on Monday night. Kanye West has apologized for using his cell phone during a performance of The Cher Show. He attended the Broadway musical’s opening night at Neil Simon Theatre on Monday with wife Kim Kardashian West and was apparently caught in the distracting act by actor Jarrod Spector.
Spector, who portrays Sonny Bono in the production, called out the rapper on Twitter. “Hey @kanyewest so cool that you’re here at @TheCherShow! If you look up from your cell phone you’ll see we’re doing a show up here,” the actor tweeted.

“King Kong” (previews begin October 5; opens November 8)
In this musical adaptation of Merian C. Cooper and Ernest B. The new jukebox bio-musical “The Cher Show” captures a good amount of the vibrant personality and genuinely admirable perseverance that make Cher the ultimate celebrity survivor. But like Cher herself, the show careens from career to career without a consistent thrust other than awesome attitude. In its pre-Broadway version premiering in Chicago, “The Cher Show” sings but doesn’t soar, and seems likely to appeal primarily to the most adoring of her admittedly enormous fan base, suggesting a commercial trajectory more in line with “On Your Feet” than “Beautiful.”

Will Neil Patrick Harris claim his first Tony Award this Sunday for his gender-bending turn in the musical revival of Hedwig and the Angry Inch? Probably. Will fellow multiple-Emmy winner Bryan Cranston win for playing Lyndon B. Johnson in the biodrama All the Way? Count on it. But will it be the Carole King biomusical Beautiful or the murderously funny A Gentleman’s Guide to Love & Murder that earns top honors as the Best New Musical of the Broadway season?
On that point, as on many other tight races in this year’s Tony contest, EW critics Melissa Rose Bernardo and Thom Geier are divided.

After six seasons of playing the bioplar wannabe rock star Craig Manning on Degrassi, Jake Epstein “graduated” from the hit Canadian series to attend theater school. He made a few guest appearances — who can forget his surprise coke problem or the gang’s trip to Hollywood? — before landing roles in the national tours of Spring Awakening and American Idiot. And with that, a Broadway baby was born. Epstein currently stars as Gerry Goffin in Beautiful: The Carole King Musical, the story of the prolific singer-songwriter and her former husband/writing partner that is much more than a simple reading of their Wikipedia pages set to music. With seven Tony Award nominations, the show is one of the must-see productions of the season, making Epstein one of Degrassi‘s biggest success stories to date. See? It’s not all about Drake.

Fully realizing its underdog appeal, the cheeky musical A Gentleman’s Guide to Love and Murder slayed the competition this morning with a whopping 10 Tony nominations, including nods for both of its tireless leading men, Jefferson Mays and Bryce Pinkham. Neil Patrick Harris’ return to Broadway after a decade yielded him his first-ever Tony nomination for the celebrated revival of Hedwig and the Angry Inch, which netted an impressive eight nods. (Had it been eligible as a new musical, Hedwig probably would have easily tied Guide, as score and book would have been slam dunks). Trailing these shows with seven...
