The films in the running for the 2024 Best Film Editing Oscar are “Anatomy of a Fall,” “The Holdovers,” “Killers of the Flower Moon,” “Oppenheimer,” and “Poor Things.” Our current odds indicate that “Oppenheimer” (31/10) is the frontrunner, followed in order by “Anatomy of a Fall” (4/1), “Killers of the Flower Moon” (9/2), “Poor Things” (9/2), and “The Holdovers” (9/2).
Having previously bagged trophies for “Raging Bull” (1981), “The Aviator” (2005), and “The Departed” (2007), Thelma Schoonmaker could now become this category’s first quadruple champion by winning for “Killers of the Flower Moon.” The 84-year-old is also the first cutter to reach a total of nine nominations, with all but her first for “Woodstock” (1971) having come for films directed by Martin Scorsese. Oscar winner Emerald Fennell (Promising Young Woman) has set up her second feature as a director with MRC Film, with production expected to kick off this summer.
Details with regard to the plot of the film, also to be penned and produced by Fennell, are being kept under wraps. Deadline understands, though, that it will tell a story of obsession. MRC Film will serve as the studio for Fennell’s latest, with Margot Robbie’s Promising Young Woman producer LuckyChap Entertainment in talks to produce. Casting is underway.
Fennell’s feature directorial debut Promising Young Woman made its world premiere at the 2020 Sundance Film Festival and would ultimately bring her the Oscar for Best Original Screenplay, along with noms for Best Achievement in Directing and Best Picture. Its star, Carey Mulligan was nominated for Best Actress, with editor Frédéric Thoraval also being recognized.

Emerald Fennell — who won the Academy Award for best original screenplay last year for her directorial debut “Promising Young Woman” — has set up her next project. Though plot details are being kept under wraps, it’s said to be a story of obsession.
MRC Film is the studio behind the movie, and LuckyChap Entertainment, which produced “Promising Young Woman,” is in talks to produce this project as well. “Promising Young Woman” received a total of five Oscar nominations — for best picture, director, actress (for Carey Mulligan’s performance), editing (Frédéric Thoraval) and original screenplay (which Fennell won).
Fennell is currently meeting with actors to cast for the top-secret project, and plans to begin filming this summer. As was the case with “Promising Young Woman,” she will once again direct, write and produce.

These Oscars had originally been scheduled for February 28, but then the Covid-19 pandemic upended the entire entertainment industry. Movie productions were put on hold. Movie releases were delayed. And award shows across various entertainment industry switched to virtual or hybrid formats with limited or no in-person audiences in attendance.

Good news: There are 41 feature films nominated for Oscars this year. Better news: The 93rd Academy Awards are Sunday, so there’s still time to watch some of the movies before the biggest night in Hollywood.
“Mank” leads all films with 10 nominations, with “The Father,” “Judas and the Black Messiah,” “Minari,” “Nomadland,” “Sound of Metal,” and “The Trial of the Chicago 7” in a six-way tie for second with six nominations a piece. It’s the most diverse slate of nominees ever, with two women in the directing category for the first time ever (“Nomadland” director Chloe Zhao and “Promising Young Woman” filmmaker Emerald Fennell), and nine of the 20 acting nominations went to people of color.
It’s also an extraordinarily streaming-heavy field; Netflix snagged an astonishing 35 nominations, its highest mark ever and the most for an individual studio in more than a decade.

The films in the running for the 2021 Best Film Editing Oscar are: Yorgos Lamprinos (“The Father”), Chloé Zhao (“Nomadland”), Frédéric Thoraval (“Promising Young Woman”), Mikkel E.G. Nielsen (“Sound of Metal”) and Alan Baumgarten (“The Trial of the Chicago 7”). Our current odds indicate that “Sound of Metal” (69/20) will take the prize, followed in order by “The Trial of the Chicago 7” (71/20), “Nomadland” (9/2), “The Father” (9/2), and “Promising Young Woman” (9/2)
Of the five individuals in this year’s lineup, only Baumgarten has been nominated before. He, Jay Cassidy, and Crispin Struthers were collectively recognized for “American Hustle” in 2014 but lost to Alfonso Cuarón and Mark Sanger (“Gravity”).
Any one of the newcomers could become the fifth cutter in eight years to prevail on their first outing. Sanger was the first, followed by Margaret Sixel, John Ottman, and Andrew Buckland.

This season’s editing race features five Best Picture nominees with very visceral stories: Chloé Zhao’s “Nomadland” (serving as her own editor), Aaron Sorkin’s “The Trial of the Chicago 7,” Darius Marder’s “Sound of Metal,” Florian Zeller’s “The Father,” and Emerald Fennel’s “Promising Young Woman.” However, “The Trial of the Chicago 7″ is now the favorite, bolstered by its Ace Eddie win.
Editor Alan Baumgarten had the most ambitious editorial task: balancing three story threads in “Rashomon”-like fashion with multiple perspectives and jumping back and forth in time, from the overheated courtroom drama to the violent, vérité-like riots during the ’68 Democratic Convention to the bitter political rivalry between Tom Hayden (Eddie Redmayne) and Abbie Hoffman (Sacha Baron Cohen). Plus, Baumgarten oversaw a sprawling six-minute prologue that was like lighting a fuse with historical context and character introductions.

“The Trial of the Chicago 7” got a big boost in its bid for Best Editing at the Oscars with a win at the Ace Golden Eddie Awards on April 17. It prevailed in the drama race at these awards bestowed by American Cinema Editors over two of its Oscar rivals — “Nomadland” and “Sound of Metal” — as well as “Mank” and “Minari.”
Another of the Oscar nominees, “Promising Young Woman,” lost the comedy/musical category to “Palm Springs.” The other contenders in that race were “Borat Subsequent Moviefilm,” “I Care a Lot” and “On the Rocks.”

The American Cinema Editors guild, which hands out its awards on April 17, has a good track record as a preview of the Oscar winner for Best Picture (18 out of the last 30) and a great one for forecasting who will win the Film Editing Oscar (22 of the last 30). Not surprisingly, it is also fairly prescient when it comes to predicting the five Film Editing Oscar slots. Four of this year’s Academy Awards nominees contend for this cutting prize; “The Father” was snubbed by the American Cinema Editors.
The Ace Eddie Awards divide their prizes for editing between dramas and comedies/musicals. Oscar nominees “Nomadland,” “Sound of Metal and “The Trial of the Chicago 7” contend here in the drama race, which is rounded out by “Mank” and “Minari.” Facing off on the comedy side against Oscar nominee “Promising Young Woman” are “Borat Subsequent Moviefilm,” “I Care a Lot,” “On the Rocks” and “Palm Springs.

Carey Mulligan is deepening her Netflix footprint, as the two-time Academy Award-nominated actress has joined co-star Adam Sandler in the upcoming Netflix movie “Spaceman.” The outer-space adventure marks her fifth collaboration with the streaming giant, as she most recently starred in the BAFTA-nominated “The Dig,” as well as the Oscar-nominated “Mudbound,” the BBC miniseries “Collateral,” and will star in Bradley Cooper’s upcoming Leonard Bernstein biopic “Maestro” as the iconic composer’s wife.
Deadline first reported the news of Mulligan’s casting in “Spaceman,” which will hail from the Primetime Emmy-winning Swedish director of “Chernobyl,” Johan Renck. “Spaceman,” first announced last year, was originally titled “The Spaceman of Bohemia.” It’s based on Jaroslav Kalfař’s 2017 novel. Mulligan will play the wife of Adam Sandler’s astronaut, who is sent to the far reaches of the galaxy in search of a mysterious ancient dust. Soon, his earthly life begins to fall apart,...

Given the seismic impact of the #MeToo movement on the worldwide film industry, it was only a matter of time before the issue formed the basis of a movie. Emerald Fennell’s Promising Young Woman stars Carey Mulligan as Cassie, a young college dropout whose life has been scarred by a mysterious trauma that claimed the life of her best friend, Nina. Cassie’s unusual means of seeking revenge takes her to bars and clubs, where she poses as an incapacitated drunk—then turns the tables on the predatory men who try to take advantage of her.
Although it is certainly timely in its confrontation of sexual harassment, the film’s triple Oscar-nominated director Fennell said during Focus Features’ panel at Deadline’s Contenders Film: The Nominees virtual event that this was not necessarily her intention.
“I don’t know how much of that was deliberate, to be honest,” she said.

Four of the five contenders in the editing race this year are newcomers, with only Alan Baumgarten (“The Trial of Chicago 7”), who snared an Oscar nom for 2013’s “American Hustle,” being recognized previously by the Academy.
“The Father” might have landed six nominations including best picture, but to land a win here it would need to beat frontrunners “Sound of Metal” and “The Trial of the Chicago 7.”
However, historically, to be considered the Oscar frontrunner for best picture, you need to land picture, director, original or adapted screenplay, editing and acting nominations. There are only two films that check that: “Nomadland” and “Promising Young Woman.”
Confused? This is where Oscar watchers will need to be following what Ace Eddies pick come April 17.
The Ace Eddies track record for guiding who wins the editor prize on Oscar night stands at 89%. It also is a solid guide to predicting best picture.

The nominations for the 2021 Ace Eddie Awards announced on Thursday (March 11) include our Oscar frontrunner for Best Film Editing, “The Trial of the Chicago 7,” along with three of the other four films we’re predicting to reap bids in that race: “Mank,” “Nomadland” and “Sound of Metal.” While “The Father” was snubbed by the American Cinema Editors we expect it to be the fifth Academy Awards contender.
The Ace Eddie Awards divide their prizes for editing between dramas and comedies/musicals. “Mank,” “Nomadland,” “Sound of Metal and “The Trial of the Chicago 7” contend here in the drama race, which is rounded out by “Minari.” Facing off on the comedy side are “Borat Subsequent Moviefilm,” “I Care a Lot,” “On the Rocks,” “Palm Springs” and “Promising Young Woman.”

“Mank,” “Minari,” “Nomadland,” “Sound of Metal” and “The Trial of the Chicago 7” have been nominated in the dramatic-film category at the American Cinema Editors’ 71st annual Ace Eddie Awards, which honors the best in film and television editing.
In the comedy film category, the nominees are “Borat Subsequent Moviefilm,” “I Care a Lot,” “On the Rocks,” “Palm Springs” and “Promising Young Woman.”
The films that were bypassed in the Ace nominations include “Tenet,” “News of the World,” “The Father,” “Da 5 Bloods” and “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom.”
Over the past decade, 90% of the Oscar nominees for Best Film Editing have first been nominated by the American Cinema Editors. The Oscar nominees are heavily weighted toward the Ace dramatic category, with 34 nominees coming from that category since 2010, as opposed to 11 nominees from the comedy category.

Frédéric Thoraval had a difficult task ahead of him as the editor on “Promising Young Woman.” The film, about a young woman named Cassie (Carey Mulligan) who seeks vengeance after a traumatic event that happened years ago to her best friend, balances many tones including dark satire, thriller, horror and even rom-com. But the editor credits writer-director Emerald Fennell‘s script for crafting an emotional through-line to keep the film feeling of a piece. “We had a very clear path to follow,” says Thoroval in an exclusive new interview for Gold Derby. “I think very quickly in the cut, there was one thing that was obvious: we needed to keep an emotional connection with the character of Cassie.” Watch the full interview above.
What also helped Thoraval greatly was Mulligan’s concentrated performance. Like Thoraval, Mulligan was focused on bringing out the core of Cassie, even through the very different...

Over a decade later, Carey Mulligan may finally be able to return to an Oscars ceremony as a nominee with “Promising Young Woman.”
In 2009, the London-born performer delivered her breakout role in Lone Scherfig’s “An Education” and mustered an Oscar nomination for best actress. Since then, she’s been caught in what I call “one-nomination purgatory” – a place where talented actors are held and, despite awards-worthy turns, can’t muster enough buzz to nab their second nomination. Since 2010, she’s missed out on mentions for “Shame,” “Inside Llewyn Davis” and “Wildlife,” garnering outstanding reviews but coming up short. Could this finally be her invitation back? The reception and reviews so far indicate it could be.
As Cassandra Thomas, a smart and cunning woman righting the wrongs of her past, the 35-year-old is sensationally equipped and compelling in delivering one of her strongest turns yet. The film and performance check...

See Unforgettable in theaters April 21, 2017.
Warner Bros. Pictures’ dramatic thriller Unforgettable is the first film in the director’s chair for veteran producer Denise Di Novi (“Crazy, Stupid, Love,” “Focus”).
