Aussie thesp Eric Bana is in talks to join Scott Derrickson’s paranormal police thriller Beware the Night from a script that he co-wrote with Paul Boardman.
Derrickson (Day the Earth Stood Still) who has found better success in the low budget world with the forthcoming buzz-earning Sinister will be delivering this project in the form of a supernatural story where an NYC policeman investigates demons and other things of a terrifying nature.
Mark Wahlberg was offered the same lead role, but he’s decided not to join the film, which is a co-production with Jerry Bruckheimer’s company and Disney.
The script is based on a true-crime thriller written by Ralph Sarchie and Lisa Collier Cool, which recounts tales of the NYPD’s close encounters with the unexplained.

Cops are a hardy perennial when it comes to movie fodder. And horror is likewise a powerhouse genre. So it makes you wonder why the two don’t get combined more often. Scott Derrickson is currently developing just such a mash-up with police paranormal thriller Beware The Night. It appears he’s close to recruiting a lead, as Eric Bana is in talks to star.If he signs, Bana would play a New York police officer who investigates real life demon possessions, exorcisms and other supernatural creatures, including werewolves. Sounds a little like The X-Files meets NYPD Blue.Derrickson co-wrote the script with regular collaborator Paul Boardman, and Screen Gems is backing the movie. Mark Wahlberg was the first name courted for the lead gig, but he’s decided not to take it on - perhaps because his full schedule now also includes Transformers 4. Hence Bana being called. The actor,...

After winning an Emmy of her own in 2010, Jane Lynch is poised to take the next logical step: serving as host(ess) of the entire awards show! The Glee baddie, who was named Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy at last year’s Primetime Emmy Awards, is reportedly thisclose to signing on as emcee of the 2011 festivities, says Deadline. Given that the Emmys are set to air this September on Fox — aka the home of Lynch’s hit musical dramedy — the choice of host seems to be the perfect fit.

Night At The Museum director Shawn Levy has been enlisted by DreamWorks to bring futuristic boxing movie Real Steel to the screen. Set in a sanitised future where human boxing has been outlawed and remotely-operated robots slug it out in the ring, it follows a father and son's attempts to win the 'Bot Boxing Championship.Levy was tapped up by Steven Spielberg for the pugilist project when Peter Berg ended talks. Levy describes Real Steel as "a movie filled with mechanical warriors, [but] at its core it's an incredibly human story." So not Transformers 2, basically.Tone-wise, the choice of Levy (and the whole 'Bot Boxing' thing) suggests a light-hearted rather than Raging Bull-meets-Philip K. Dick vibe. He's been quietly building a rep as a specialist in family-friendly comedies, with the Night At The Museum franchise and Cheaper By The Dozen under his belt, and The Pink Panther presumably buried in his back garden.

Taylor Hackford will direct “Tenn,” a drama about the life of playwright Tennessee Williams, according to Variety.
The biopic focuses on how Williams’ relationships with his close family members pushed him to write famous plays such as “A Streetcar Named Desire” and “The Glass Menagerie.”
Hackford will be directing a script by Robin Shushan, who recently wrote a screenplay based on the J. Paul Getty kidnapping for Peter Berg.
The project’s producer Michael Ohoven said the film will bear some similarities to “Capote,” in which author Truman Capote developed a special relationship with one of two murderers.
Hackford last directed the Ray Charles biopic “Ray.” He recently wrapped filming for “Love Ranch,” a drama starring his wife Helen Mirren and Joe Pesci.
