The Shrine - Still - CrucifixionYou really have to respect a village for sticking with Paganism 1400 years after variations of this religion have basically gone out of fashion. Paganism is a blanket term used to cover many Eastern European before the emergence of Christianity. Paganism is one of the themes within director Jon Knautz's (Jack Brooks: Monster Slayer) Canadian horror film The Shrine, which will have a World Premiere at Montreal's Fantasia July 25th. The film will have one showing at the film festival and The Shrine, unsurprisingly, shows a "pagan-looking shrine," (Fantasia) where the Polish locals hold Pagan rites for mysterious demons. The trailer for the film is fantastic and the clip shows more of the religious rites performed by these ancient worshipers, below.

The makers of Jack Brooks: Monster Slayer, Jon Knautz and Trevor Matthews, have a new film playing at the Fantasia Film Festival 2010 called The Shrine, and the full trailer for the flick has just made its way online!
Fantasia Description
"The team behind the beloved Jack Brooks: Monster Slayer are back… with a decidedly darker and infinitely freakier piece of work: The Shrine. A small group of American journalists embarks to a remote Polish village in search of (the likely remains of) a U.S. backpacker who vanished off the face of the Earth. His disappearance has been linked to the distant village in question, and the journalists arrive hoping to find answers. Answers they will get, and it’s not going to be pretty. Because the shadowy village of Alwaina is a place of very old, very terrible secrets, and of even worse cultural traditions. It begins when the...

Canadians have been hip to making web series for years now, with some of the best indies coming out of the country up North—Tiki Bar TV, Riese, After Judgment, A Comicbook Orange all hail from Canadian creators. Appropriately, there's a site dedicated to showcasing the country's episodic work. Lifeforce TV launched a year ago as an online network of Canadian web series. Today they've rolled out what they are calling "Version 2" of the network and have three new series on the lineup. Two scripted comedies Saving Rent (above) and The Jim are on the list, with music and film interview series Independent Scene rounding out the new slate. Behind the site is Toronto-based Lifeforce Entertainment, which produces original web series itself like last year's Men's Room, Angels Local 437 and the controversial chat show Table Topics. All three of the new series have been licensed from independent creators, in a revenue sharing deals.

Canadian director Jon Knautz burst into international view with Jack Brooks Monster Slayer and with that film’s release still fresh the entire team behind Jack Brooks is already hard at work on their sophomore feature, the much more serious-minded The Shrine. I had the chance to visit the set earlier this week and though it was just Day Two of the shoot they were already hard at it, shooting in a large scale underground temple set. Nothing like getting the blood out of the way early ...
After a young American backpacker goes missing in Europe, three journalists link his disappearance to a remote Polish village called Alvaina. Upon further investigation, the journalists discover that Alvaina has a history of bizarre cult activity revolving around human sacrifice. Hell bent on discovering the truth, they travel to the small village, but quickly find themselves pursued by a mysterious group set on killing them.

This is why I’m not a betting man. Speculation in the aftermath of Canuck creature feature Jack Brooks Monster Slayer was that the creative forces behind that film would return quickly to the same well to create a sequel, speculation reinforced by Brooks’ sequel friendly ending and by comments made by the stars and director when the film was on the fest circuit. Well, all that speculation was wrong. The core creative team behind Jack Brooks starts production on their next feature next week and Jack Brooks 2 it aint, instead what we’re getting is what appears to be a far more serious horror picture titled The Shrine.
