Universal has released Peter Berg's Battleship on Blu-ray, and I had the chance to review it over the weekend. I did not have the chance to see this film in theaters, and I am very thankful for that fact. I typically love mindless fun, but this movie is straight up ridiculous. Battleship stars Alexander Skarsgard (True Blood), Brooklyn Decker (Just Go With It), Liam Neeson (Taken, The Grey), Taylor Kitsch (John Carter), Jesse Plemons (Friday Night Lights), Rhianna (singer-turned-actress), Tadanobu Asano (Thor), and Hamish Linklater (New Adventures of Old Christine). The film only has two things going for it, amazing picture and sound quality.
The script was penned by Jon and Erich Hoeber, and is loosely based on Hasbro's classic naval combat game. I can say truly that there is nothing at all that reminds me of the game, aside from a lot of the action taking place on a Battleship.

This week: Will "Battleship" sink or swim on DVD and Blu-ray? The mega-budget summer flop about a naval fleet fighting off alien invaders had a reported budget of about $209 million but had to rely on the foreign box office to keep it afloat.
Also new this week is the romantic drama "The Lucky One" and the stop-motion animated adventure "The Pirates! Band of Misfits."

There was little love for Peter Berg.s waterlogged Battleship earlier this year. I like big dumb fun as much as the next guy, but Battleship was too big, too dumb, and not nearly enough fun. The aliens vs. military epic might have thrilled a few hyperactive 10-year-olds but the script was too dopey and action far too turgid to achieve anything resembling campy humor so the film died a quick and expensive box-office death. That said, Battleship makes for one spectacular-looking Blu-ray and Universal, perhaps to atone for making such a crappy movie, have loaded it with a boatload of fantastic extras that actually makes the darn thing worth buying.
The Picture:
Despite the dismal reception Battleship received, the Blu-ray gets high marks for the “wow” factor. The transfer is an eye-popping 1080p/Avc-encoded video transfer, as flawless as they come. Contrast is spot-on, black levels are always deep,...
