Exclusive: Producers Ian Collie and Rob Gibson are best known for helping bring an injured mongrel dog into the global consciousness in Colin From Accounts. Ahead of a busy 2024, the pair sat down with Deadline to chat about plans for their Easy Tiger Productions imprint, the state of TV in Australia and signing with CAA.
And where else to start, but with Colin From Accounts, Australian streamer Binge’s romantic sitcom series written by and starring real-life couple Patrick Brammall and Harriet Dyer. Over the weekend, the critically acclaimed show, winner of the Most Outstanding Comedy Program at the Logies, went into production on Season 2 after a delay primarily caused by the U.S. writers strike.
Gibson was first alerted to what would become Colin just after leaving his post as Head of Originals at Binge rival Stan. “Harriet had given me the script as a writing sample for another show,...

"We captured all the vocals live – and you get that immediacy that you see through the camera." Sony Pictures Classics has unveiled a behind-the-scenes featurette for Carmen, which is now showing in select theaters around the country. The film is renowned dancer / choreographer Benjamin Millepied's directorial debut, reimagining the classic opera for the big screen. An exhilarating vision starring Melissa Barrera and Paul Mescal. Carmen is a gritty modern day story with a majestic score, and dance sequences that evoke magic realism. It also features all new music created by the wonderfully talented composer Nicholas Britell. The film also co-stars Rossy de Palma, Elsa Pataky, Nicole da Silva, Tara Morice, Benedict Hardie, Richard Brancatisano, and Kaan Guldur. This featurette focuses specifically on the music - including conversations with Nicholas Britell, lyricist Julieta Venegas, the director, and other crew involved on the film. Maybe this will convince a few more...

Benjamin Millepied’s Carmen is a strange film. Inspired by Bizet’s opera, the French choreographer in his first feature as director has created an experimental fever dream set in the desert lands of the United States-Mexico border. Due for release from Sony Pictures Classics in 2023, it’s an unsteady composition, a frenzied combination of willowy movement pieces, an ecstatic score and a too-loose narrative.
The film follows the improbable love story of Carmen (Melissa Barrera, In the Heights), a Mexican woman trying to cross the border, and Aiden (Paul Mescal, Aftersun), an American veteran struggling to adjust to civilian life. Thrown together by plaintive circumstances, the two find themselves running from the police toward a new life.
In a director’s statement given to critics, Millepied severs his film from the influential opera. This is not a reinterpretation of Bizet’s Carmen,...

When Foxtel first began to craft with Fremantle Wentworth back in 2011, the hope was it would sit comfortably alongside the service’s premium HBO and BBC dramas.
While based on Reg Watson’s long-running ’80s drama Prisoner, and suitably honouring its legacy, it was not designed to a be remake. The desire was to see a modern reimagining of the characters; one that was ambitious and bold.
“We wanted to make something great for Foxtel and set the bar high. It was all part of our hopes for what we could do in the future,” executive producer and former Foxtel head of drama Penny Win recalls to If.
Originally created by Lara Radulovich and David Hannam, Fremantle Australia CEO Ian Hogg pitched Foxtel director of television Brian Walsh the series over a meal in Cannes.

"Something happened at the speakeasy." A trailer has arrived for an indie sci-fi thriller titled The Tangle, from actor / filmmaker Christopher Soren Kelly making his feature directorial debut. Described as a "lyrical new science-fiction film" and quotes in the trailer say it's "a chess game of a film" that's both ingenious and ambitious, a complex story intertwining sci-fi with meticulous filmmaking. The film is set in a future where microdrones have been invented, filling the air, the water, and our blood. "In this world, it is impossible to keep a secret anywhere but in your S.O.L. (the "Secure OnTangle Line"), a quantum encrypted hard drive implanted in your brain." The plot follows a murder investigation involving secret government agents and The Tangle creators and more. Starring Joshua Bitton, Christopher Soren Kelly, Jessica Graham, Nicole da Silva, Anil Kumar, Mary Jane Wells, and Bel Deliá. This looks cool, I'm curious to watch.

Rodger Corser and Tina Bursill in ‘Doctor Doctor.’
The Nine Network has ordered a fifth season of Easy Tiger’s medical drama Doctor Doctor, a rare commission with much of the country in virtual lockdown.
Co-head of drama Andy Ryan says the broadcaster is developing a number of drama series for 2021 and 2022.
The renewal follows yesterday’s announcement by Nine Entertainment that it aims to cut costs by $266 million this calendar year as the pandemic flattens advertising revenues.
Nine said it expects to save $28 million in spending on broadcast content this year, primarily local drama and children’s programs, assuming a prolonged production shutdown.
Co-created by Easy Tiger’s Ian Collie and Tony McNamara, Doctor Doctor stars Rodger Corser as errant rural doctor Hugh Knight. Season four, which features regulars including Nicole da Silva, Ryan Johnson, Tina Bursill, Matt Castley and Miranda Tapsell, is on hiatus while Nine News screens...

Timothy Lee on location in ‘Mystery Road.’
After serving as a script editor on three seasons of House Husbands and writing episodes of Rush and Serangoon Road, Timothy Lee’s career has gone up a couple of gears.
Lee, who graduated from Aftrs in 2006, modestly credits his progression in part to the talent drain which has resulted in numerous Aussie writers plying their trade in the Us and the UK.
“That has created opportunities for the next generation of writers,” says Lee, who got his start as a script assistant/researcher on Rescue Special Ops after securing an Australian Writers’ Guild internship with Southern Star, mentored by Sarah Smith.
That led to writing episodes of the Nine Network drama and the fourth season of Network Ten’s cop show Rush. Working on Playmaker Media’s House Husbands, he reflects, “was good for my craft but not so good for my profile.

The Great British Bake Off: BBC One, 8pm
Following the national meltdown (sorry) over the Baked Alaska 'bingate' drama last week, Bake Off returns without Iain, or Diana, who dropped out of filming for health reasons.
Emotions are running understandably high as the remaining bakers prepare a selection of pies and tarts, and try their hardest to avoid Mary Berry's least favourite feature: a soggy bottom.
Our Zoo: BBC One, 9pm
Straight after Bake Off comes a heart-warming new period drama on BBC One, which tells the story of the family who founded Chester Zoo.
Appalled at the treatment of the animals at a local circus, ex-soldier George Mottershead (Lee Ingleby) relocates a monkey and a parrot to his parents back yard - much to their distaste. Liz White, Ralf Little, Anne Reid, Sophia Myles and Stephen Campbell Moore (pictured) also star.

Thanks to AfterEllen.com reader Sophia we now know that the Aussie cop drama Rush has given its bisexual character, StellaDagostino (Nicole da Silva), a girlfriend. And I now know that that Rush is better than every police procedural in America.
Maybe it's the snappy Sorkin walk-n-talk meets crazy CSI artistry. Maybe it's the sexy cars and guns and accents. Or maybe it's the deliciously angry subtext between Stella and her gun-wielding boss, Kerry Vincent (Catherine McClements).
For ignorant Yanks (like myself, up until a few hours ago), here's a rundown: Rush follows the lives of Melbourne's Tactical Response Team. They're smarter than you and they've got the technology to prove it. Stella is a part of the unit. Her bisexuality was hinted at in the first season, and although she's already shagged fellow officer MichaelSandrelli in this (second) season, she's got a girlfriend named Alana now.
And here's how...
