After making the little-seen 2009 thriller Absence, the filmmaking duo of Kevin Kölsch and Dennis Widmyer went on to make the impressive 2014 horror film Starry Eyes, which led to them getting the chance to direct the 2019 remake of Pet Sematary. That movie didn’t become as popular as the original film, but it did earn over $100 million at the box office. Five years later, Kölsch and Widmyer have finally set up their next feature: the survival thriller The Swallow, which is set to star Grace Van Dien, who had a memorable role in season 4 of Stranger Things.
Kölsch and Widmyer wrote the screenplay for The Swallow, which was previously featured on the Bloodlist, a list assembled through a survey of industry professionals, who recommend their favorite unproduced thriller and horror scripts. The cast for the film is led by Grace Van Dien (“Stranger Things”).
“Van Dien stars as Ziggy, who, along with her four friends, journeys out on a camping trip to a picturesque remote forest. But trespassing into an off-limits area, they awaken an uncanny terror in the woods… and a ravenous hunger from within the Earth. Soon, the ground itself is trying to swallow anything and anyone it comes into contact with and Ziggy and her friends have nowhere to run as every trembling step they take could be their last.”
Kölsch and Widmyer said in a statement, “The Swallow is a lean, mean horror film that never lets its foot off the gas. Essentially, one extended set piece of tension and...

After the record-breaking success of V/H/S/85, Shudder announced at New York Comic-Con that a new V/H/S movie is in development, with a focus on sci-fi horror.
The new V/H/S movie will feature “five new bloodcurdling tapes” and will be released in 2024. “Jason Voorhees, Leprechaun, Pinhead, Dracula, even the Amityville Horror house ended up in space, so as we move into our own Part 7 it was only natural that we should too,” said producer Josh Goldbloom. “The sci-fi horror genre provides us an infinite playground of forbidden worlds and dangerous lifeforms, a formula which we’re confident will lead to the biggest, maddest, bloodiest V/H/S ever.“

As long as the V/H/S movies are successfull they'll keep making 'em. As expected, the latest installment of the series, V/H/S/85, did banger business on Shudder and AMC+ when it debuted last Friday. It became the most-watched exclusive film premiere of the year. With only a couple months left in the year it appears this title is in the bag. With great success comes demand for more and another installment will be made for 2024. This seventh film will focus on the always popular sub-genre of sci-fi horror. “Jason Voorhees, Leprechaun, Pinhead, Dracula, even the Amityville Horror house ended up in space, so as we move into our own Part 7 it was only natural that we should too,” said producer Josh Goldbloom....

V/H/S/85, the latest entry in the found footage horror anthology V/H/S/ franchise, will begin streaming on Shudder service (which previously had great success with V/H/S/94 and V/H/S/99) tomorrow, October 6th. This one consists of segments that were directed by David Bruckner (Hellraiser 2022), Scott Derrickson (The Black Phone), Gigi Saul Guerrero (Bingo Hell), Natasha Kermani (Lucky), and Mike P. Nelson (the Wrong Turn reboot) – and during an interview with ComicBook.com, Derrickson revealed that his segment is set in the same universe as The Black Phone! It even includes references to some Black Phone characters…
Derrickson said, “Oh, there’s actually a universe crossover in there, which I guess I made it too subtle because nobody’s picking it up. But James Ransone tells Detective Wayne, when he’s behind the glass, he was talking about Gunther. He says, ‘He has these dreams that are prophetic.’ And he says, ‘My sister had the same gift.

Director Mike P. Nelson is no stranger to infusing horror with political bite, having previously helmed 2021’s Wrong Turn and 2018’s The Domestics. For V/H/S/85, Nelson gets ambitious in narrative structure and tone with the segment “No Wake.”
V/H/S/85 is set to arrive exclusively on Shudder on October 6, 2023.
Joining the V/H/S team was an easy choice for Nelson when it became clear that the intent was to steer clear of the neon ’80s aesthetic.
“I remember speaking with [producer] Josh Goldbloom and Josh saying, ‘Yeah, so we’re doing ’85, and we’re trying not to do the typical kind of clean, neon thing.'” Nelson recalls. “And I was like, ‘Oh, for the love of God, thank you. Okay, good. I got something. I got something. This is going to be a lot of fun.’ That was such a breath of fresh air.”

Released through the Shudder streaming service last October, the horror anthology film V/H/S/99 quickly became the most-watched film in the history of Shudder. It’s a good thing they already greenlit another sequel – V/H/S/85 – for this year. But while we wait to see how V/H/S/85 is going to turn out, Rlje Films has given V/H/S/99 a Blu-ray, DVD, and steelbook release – and copies can be purchased at This Link.
The story segments that make up V/H/S/99 were directed by Maggie Levin (Into The Dark: My Valentine), Johannes Roberts (Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City), Flying Lotus (Kuso), Tyler MacIntyre (Tragedy Girls), and Joseph & Vanessa Winter (Deadstream). Here’s the synopsis: V/H/S/99 harkens back to the final punk rock analog days of VHS, while taking one giant leap forward into the hellish new millennium. In V/H/S/99, a thirsty teenager’s home video leads to a series of horrifying revelations.

In Kids vs. Aliens, all Gary wants is to make awesome home movies with his best buds. All his older sister Samantha wants is to hang with the cool kids. When their parents head out of town one Halloween weekend, an all-time rager of a teen house party turns to terror when aliens attack, forcing the siblings to band together to survive the night.

When we saw the teaser trailer for Hobo with a Shotgun (watch it Here) director Jason Eisener’s new film Kids vs. Aliens back in September, it was said that Rlje Films would be giving the movie a theatrical, VOD, and digital release sometime in early 2023. Now we know exactly when that release is going to happen: January 20th! Kids vs. Aliens will then be moving to the Shudder streaming service sometime later in the year.
Written by Eisener and his Hobo with a Shotgun collaborator John Davies, Kids vs. Aliens has the following synopsis:

History repeats itself. When the Shudder streaming service revived the V/H/S/ found footage horror franchise with V/H/S/94 last year, it really paid off for them. V/H/S/94 set viewership records and became the service’s biggest movie premiere ever. That’s why we got V/H/S/99 this year. And Shudder has a hit on their hands again.
Shudder sent out a press release to let us know V/H/S/99 “debuted to record numbers in its opening weekend. Through its first four days of release, the film registered 28 more unique viewers than the previous record holder, V/H/S/94, which premiered on Shudder in 2021. V/H/S/99 also accounted for nearly 22 of all on-demand streams on Shudder during the same time period and was AMC+’s #1 most watched movie of the weekend.“
It’s a good thing they already greenlit another sequel – V/H/S/85 – for next year.
Shudder’s Craig Engler had this to say:...

During the 31 days of Halloween, Shudder has a spooky lineup of frights for any horror fan and we recommend two movies for these chilly October nights.
Following the success of last year’s hit V/H/S/94 comes this year’s V/H/S/99.
V/H/S/99, which debuted at the 2022 Toronto International Film Festival, premiered on Shudder on Thursday, October 20. The film features five new stories from filmmakers Maggie Levin (Into The Dark: My Valentine), Johannes Roberts, Flying Lotus (Kuso), Tyler MacIntyre (Tragedy Girls) and Joseph & Vanessa Winter (Deadstream).
V/H/S/99 harkens back to the final punk rock analog days of VHS, while taking one giant leap forward into the hellish new millennium.

V/H/S/94 debuted to rave reviews from film critics, with The New York Times calling the film “a grisly, gory gem,” and a 90 certified fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes. V/H/S/94 was the biggest movie premiere in Shudder history, setting a...

Eleven years have passed since director Jason Eisener brought us Hobo with a Shotgun (watch it Here), and while we have had other pieces of Eisener entertainment to watch since then – he contributed segments to the anthologies The ABCs of Death and V/H/S/2, and also directed the series The Dark Side of the Ring – we haven’t gotten another Eisener feature film. Until now. Eisener’s new film Kids vs. Aliens is set to premiere at Fantastic Fest later this month, and it has also secured distribution beyond that. Variety reports that Rlje Films will be giving Kids vs. Aliens a theatrical, VOD, and digital release sometime in early 2023. Then the movie will receive a streaming release through Shudder.

Nothing beats a live Comic-Con with the scream of the audience, the thunder of Hall H, and the social media wattage that shines out of San Diego.
I’ll never forget the first time that Marvel walked the cast of Guardians of the Galaxy from the Hilton over to the Convention Center. Daily Dead recently had the opportunity to speak with Dark Star’s Creative Director, Josh Goldbloom, and we discussed his background in the film festival scene and how that led to him joining Dark Star Pictures’ founder Michael Repsch in the indie horror trenches to help provide filmmakers with the opportunity to get their films out there for fans to enjoy. Goldbloom also gave us some insight into why the word “challenging” isn’t necessarily a bad thing when it comes to marketing a film,...
