French TV festival and industry meeting unveils 2022 selection
Michael Hirst’s Billy The Kid, Channel 4 drama The Birth Of Daniel F Harris and HBO’sThe Baby are among nine dramas selected for the international competition of Series Mania TV festival, running March 18-25 in the northern French city of Lille.
The Birth Of Daniel F Harris is produced by the UK’s Clerkenwell Films, the company behind The End Of The F**king World. Lewis Gribben plays a young man who was locked away as a child by his father following the death of his mother as a child.

Series Mania has unveiled the nine shows from six countries competing for the prestigious International Competition along with revealing the lineup and Guests of Honor for this year’s edition, the first to take place in person for three years.

Departure is returning to Peacock with another mystery to solve.

Ben Platt, Tracee Ellis Ross, Daniel Dae Kim, Lola Kirke, Soko, Jermaine Fowler, Ayo Edebiri and Eric Lange have joined B.J. Novak’s new series, now titled “The Premise.”

Acorn TV has partnered with Irish broadcaster RTÉ on its latest drama co-production – period mystery Dead Still.
The U.S. Svod service will launch the six-part series in 2020. It comes from Irish producer Deadpan Pictures, Toronto-based Shaftesbury and Germany’s Zdf Enterprises.
Set in 1880s Ireland in the Victorian era heyday of postmortem photography, the period drama follows a renowned memorial photographer as he investigates the murders of his recently deceased subjects

Film4 director Daniel Battsek is the industry ambassador this year.
Senior executives from Film4, Playtime and eOne are among the participants in the 2019 edition of Inside Pictures, the international business training and leadership skills development programme from the UK’s National Film and TV School (Nfts).
Among the 20 participants are Frédérique Rouault, director of international sales at French sales agent Playtime; Samanta Roberts, marketing director, film at eOne Spain; and two representatives from Film4 – senior legal and business affairs manager Don McNicholl, and marketing and distribution manager Hannah Saunders.
Daniel Battsek, director of Film4, is the industry ambassador for the programme.

Element Pictures has acquired Irish and UK rights to Halal Daddy, a culture-clash comedy which commenced principal photography in the west of Ireland this week.
Colm Meaney (Con Air) has joined the cast on the Irish-German co-production, which will shoot in and around Sligo for the next five weeks.
Rights to the project have also been acquired in Germany by Koch Media (theatrical) and Telepool (TV) amid strong international interest.
Produced by Hermann Florin for Florin Films and its Irish outlet Benrae Florin Films alongside Ailish McElmeel for Ireland’s Deadpan Pictures, the production is supported by the Irish Film Board and Eurimages with Global Screen handling world sales. A culture-clash comedy set in Ireland’s first Halal meat factory is among the productions backed by the Irish Film Board (Ifb) in its latest round of funding decisions, which totals more than €3m.
Halal Daddy - the story of a young Muslim’s struggle to manage a rundown abattoir in the West of Ireland - has received a production funding commitment of €500,000.
It is one of a number of comedies backed by the Ifb as it faces the challenge of building on what has been a buoyant period for the Irish film industry, with a number of projects performing strongly throughout awards season. Comedy traditionally performs well with domestic audiences.

Partners on the initiative, which is now four years old, are the Erich Pommer Institut in Potsdam, Germany (the creator of Tap), Strategic Partners in Halifax, Canada and Ifp in New York. The scheme also includes observer producers from India and Mexico.
Tap is supported by the Media Mundus Programme of the European Union, by Telefilm Canada, and Vff (Verwertungsgesellschaft der Film- und Fernsehproduzenten mbH) Germany.

A public hearing is to be held on Friday, March 18th in Brussels where the future of the Media funding programme is to be discussed. The event, organised by the European Commission is entitled 'Future of the Medias'. To mark the upcoming event Iftn spoke with Irish filmmakers who have received support from the Media programme over the years. These included Cartoon Saloon's Paul Young; Siobhán Ward from Crossing the Line Films; Grand Pictures' Ailish McElmeel; Fastnet Films' Macdara Kelleher; Jam Media's John Rice; Newgrange Pictures' Lesley McKimm and Magma Production's Moe Honan.
