- The first episode of Spartacus (2010), Fugitivus (2012), was dedicated to the memory of Whitfield. At the end of the closing credits, a photo of Andy was shown, with the caption "Our greatest champion".
- He was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin's lymphoma and began treatment immediately in New Zealand. As a result, production on the second season of Spartacus (2010) - which was scheduled to get underway later that month - was delayed.
- For the series finale of Spartacus (2010), there was a special tribute to him after the credits.
- Though he was ambivalent about taking his first major lead role in Gabriel due to a lack of paycheck, his wife encouraged him saying that it was what he had worked so hard for. In Be Here Now, he revealed that because he took that role, he was able to land the role of Spartacus.
- Whitfield was born in Amlwch, Wales, where he attended Ysgol Sir Thomas Jones. He started acting and modeling while working as an engineer and building inspector for a consulting agency. As a fashion model he took part in approximately 40 advertising campaigns in Europe and Asia. He moved to Sydney, Australia in 1999 with his future wife, Vashti Whitfield, with whom he had a son and daughter. His parents, Robert and Pat Whitfield, also moved there in 1999 with his older sister Laura. He attended the Screenwise Film & TV School for Actors in Sydney.
