"When I first started writing songs they were terrible..." Abramorama & Apple Music have released the first official trailer for a documentary titled Songwriter, a film about the music of popular British musician Ed Sheeran. This film was a last minute addition to the line-up at the Berlin Film Festival earlier this year, but it played to dismal reviews and a very muted, forgettable response. "This personal portrait of the British singer-songwriter, filmed by his cousin Murray Cummings, follows this modest performer’s creative process as he writes a new song from scratch that will entrance millions. From an early-morning jam in the garden to the finished song, from the first chord to the honed lyrics." I don't know about everyone else, but it seems a bit too early to be making a doc about Sheeran, doesn't seem like there's too much of his story to share yet. Here's the official...

“I guess this is the first time on-camera you’re gonna see a song being written, so make sure you get all of it,” Ed Sheeran says in the midst of making “Songwriter.”
The documentary, set for release on Aug. 28 on Apple Music, is a collaboration between the hit-making musician and his cousin, Murray Cummings, over a span of 10 years. Sheeran shared the trailer for the film on his Instagram this morning.
The footage invites viewers to watch as “sounds become songs,” particularly during the writing process for Sheeran’s latest album, “Divide.”
“I just have a weird sense it’s gonna be the career-defining album,” he says in the clip. “All the songs have a thread that go through it and it’s all family.”
The video moves through clips of Sheeran at home, in the studio, and performing songs off the album onstage like “Galway Girl” and “Happier.

Apple showed its might, winning an auction for worldwide rights to the Ed Sheeran documentary “Songwriter” following its premiere at the Tribeca Film Festival.
The tech giant paid somewhere in the low- to mid-seven figures, people close to the deal confirmed to TheWrap.

The film premiered at the Berlin International Film Festival in February and is screening this month at the Tribeca Film Festival in New York. “Songwriter” hasn’t been reviewed well, overall.
The Guardian said of the film: “Ed Sheeran is now the subject of this diverting but pretty incurious promo-video-style cheerleading documentary about the build-up to the release of Sheeran’s album, ‘Divide.'”
Apple, which has more than $280 billion cash on reserve, announced last year its plans to pony up $1 billion to invest in Hollywood content. The documentary was picked up by Apple Music.

During South by Southwest in March, Eddy Cue, Apple’s senior vice president of software and services, said: “We’re completely all in. There’s a difference though; we’re not after quantity, we’re after quality,” said Cue. “We don’t try to sell the most smartphones in the world; we don’t try to sell the most apps, we try to make the best one.”
With former Sony execs Jamie Erlicht and Zack Van Amburg running the show, Apple has already brokered deals for a morning-show series from Jennifer Aniston and Reese Witherspoon, as well as a TV series from “La La Land” director Damien Chazelle.
30West brokered the deal for “Songwriter,” negotiating with Fox Rothschild’s Marc H. Simon for the filmmakers, while Larry Jackson negotiated for Apple Music.

Setting his sights on the songwriting process of Grammy-Award winning singer-songwriter Ed Sheehan with Songwriter—his feature debut, which screened at the Berlin International Film Festival before moving on to Tribeca—Murray Cummings’ documentary came about as unusually and organically as any could.
The Songwriter journey began with a family connection, Cummings being Sheeran’s cousin. “Our family’s really close, so all the way through growing up, we would hang out and go on holiday together, and stuff like that,” the documentarian told Deadline, appearing today in Tribeca with producer Kimmie Kim.
When Sheeran decided to commit to pursuing music full-time, he moved to London and stayed on Cummings’ couch, just as he was working himself on learning to become a filmmaker. “I would just go out and film him, so I’d learn how to edit and stuff like that. When he signed a record deal, he wanted...
