If Steve McClaren didn’t know what Newcastle United’s biggest problem defensively has been for the past few seasons, then he certainly does now. Set-pieces have been a shambles both offensively and defensively for the Magpies for years – and playing a back four with only one recognised centre-back in it certainly didn’t help matters.
Centre-backs are a priority for the Magpies and, although Chancel Mbemba is set to arrive later this week – with his medical potentially pencilled in for Thursday – more need to follow as the Newcastle defence were breached four times in a 4-3 defeat to Portland Timbers 2.
However, the main bright spark for Newcastle was the continued emergence of Rolando Aarons. The youngster bagged a brace – including a magnificent overhead kick – to drag United back into the game, but for some reason the visitors only decided to start playing after 75 minutes.

If talk of Newcastle United being relegated was merely a pessimistic possibility before the weekend then following this implosion at the King Power Stadium then it has become an all-too real prospect. The Magpies look so inept right now that not only do they appear incapable of getting another win before the season is out, they appear incapable of picking up a single point.
A double from Leonardo Ulloa, including one from the penalty spot, and a Wes Morgan goal condemned Newcastle to their eighth consecutive defeat – their worst ever Premier League run – as the Magpies finished the game with nine men once more with Mike Williamson dismissed after picking up two yellow cards, as Daryl Janmaat was in injury time. They have now conceded 60 goals in the Premier League – that is the most in the entire division – following this 3-0 reversal.

What a difference a month makes. At the end of October, Newcastle went into the last international break without a win in the league, and in the bottom three and very few people could ever have guessed that Mike Williamson’s message of positivity would turn out to be spot on.
Now though, things are looking up, and four victories in four Premier League games have put the Magpies 8th in the table. Some (idiots) have mentioned Europe already, but Newcastle are a long way away from a sustained success period.
A lot of good work has already gone into the team’s shape and discipline, and tactically the team’s recent performances have been spot on. But there is still a lot to work on to make Newcastle’s unlikely charge on the top six a serious thing, and with the international break again upon us,...
