Acclaimed Chinese film director Chen Daming is expected to direct “The Peking Express,” a book-to-film adaptation of the story of an infamous train robbery that took place 100 years ago.
The non-fiction book was written Beijing-based writer and lawyer James Zimmerman and was an ‘Editor’s Choice’ selection by the New York Times. It describes the raid on a luxury express train by Chinese bandits in Shandong Province in 1923 and the ensuing six-week hostage standoff that captivated the world. So extraordinary are the events recounted in The Peking Express that it reads like fantasy…yielding a captivating story of robbery, murder, hostages and intrigue…,” said the paper in a review of the book.
A screenplay is currently being drafted and it is envisaged that the film will be structured as a China-international co-production.

The Walking Dead‘s Michael Cudlitz is going from the wastelands of a zombie apocalypse to the highrises of Metropolis when he joins the cast of Superman & Lois for the show’s third season. According to Entertainment Weekly, Cudlitz is playing a new version of the supervillain genius known to hold the DC Universe in a vice-like grip tighter than Superman’s most aggressive handshake.
Per the EW’s official description, “Cudlitz’s Lex Luthor is known to the world as the visionary billionaire behind LexCorp, but secretly, the criminal underworld knows who Lex truly is: a brutal psychopath who terrorizes anyone he crosses paths with. When Lex debuts this season, it’s been years since he dropped out of the public eye, and he’s re-emerging hellbent on correcting a personal injustice by enacting revenge on the two people he feels have wronged him — Superman (Tyler Hoechlin) and Lois Lane...

The usually bustling lives of the students at Bringston University came to a halt after the campus was put on lockdown due to a bomb threat during Monday night’s episode of The CW series All American: Homecoming.
It’s a story that showrunners Nkechi Okoro Carroll and Marqui Jackson have been hoping to bring to the small screen since the show’s inception, given the rising number of bomb threats made against historically Black colleges and universities over the past several years.
HBCUs in the United States have been targeted by bomb threats at least 57 times this year. In August, Howard University received two bomb threats in the span of a week. To date, no arrests have been made in connection with any of these incidents.

Michael Cudlitz and Jake Abel and have signed on to star alongside Zhang Hanyu and Vivienne Tien (Be Yourself) in Unspoken, a dramatic feature from writer-director Daming Chen that is now in production.
Unspoken tells the story of Xu (Zhang), an estranged father separated from his deaf daughter and her new life at an American university, whose murder reunites them in a way neither could have foreseen. The tragedy pierces Xu with grief and guilt that he couldn’t be present to protect his child. An ex-cop himself, he becomes convinced the local authorities are pursuing the wrong suspect – and that racism is compromising the investigation.
With a young Chinese translator in tow (Tien), who is navigating her own challenging path as a young immigrant, Xu sets out to learn what really happened to his daughter.

The latest horror flick from director James Wan, Malignant is a bizarre mixture of the brilliant and the terrible. It’s hard to think of a comparable film that hits both the highs and the lows that Malignant does. As a result, it’s entirely possible that you’ll love it and hate it in equal measure.
The film begins with a terribly acted prologue in which an unseen entity kills lots of people in a hospital and a po-faced doctor declares, “It’s time to cut out the cancer!” We then cut to the present day, where heavily pregnant Madison (Annabelle Wallis) is beaten by her abusive husband (Jake Abel), so badly that the back of her head bleeds profusely.

With “Malignant,” James Wan reminds us that no matter how many billion-dollar mainstream movies he directs (two and counting), he’s still a super kooky horror auteur whose biggest influences are Ozploitation, Italian supernatural thrillers and good old-fashioned scuzz cinema.
Hot off the superhero blockbuster “Aquaman,” it seems as though Wan is eager to let off some steam. “Malignant” boasts exciting visual effects, but it’s a small-scale shocker seeking only an audience of envelope-pushing scary movie buffs. That gives the filmmaker the freedom to make the sort of ultraviolent thriller Lucio Fulci and Frank Henenlotter might have co-directed in the early 1980s if they had carte blanche and a blank check.
“Malignant” stars Annabelle Wallis (“Annabelle”) as Madison, a woman with visions of a bizarre serial killer named Gabriel with a penchant for slaughtering retired doctors. Madison wasn’t in a good place to begin with, having recently endured...

Marking his return to horror after a detour into family-friendly blockbuster filmmaking with “Aquaman,” James Wan’s “Malignant” certainly proves that the director-producer still knows how to get down and dirty in the genre where he made his name. Although in a way he’s still operating in studio franchise mode, as “Malignant” might well be thought of as the most demented “Frozen” remake imaginable.
Like “Frozen,” “Malignant” centers on two sisters, one of them bubbly and optimistic, the other haunted and possibly possessed with supernatural powers. The similarities don’t necessarily end there, either – although the sisters’ hair color has been switched – but to reveal too much more would be to ruin the film’s most essential quality: its willingness to steadily and purposefully descend to the lowest levels of delirious lunacy, and then keep going further still. Working from a script by Akela Cooper, Wan tosses elements of...

“I always wanted a blood relation,” says Madison to her adopted sister in the final moments of “Malignant,” the latest terrifying concoction from horror titan James Wan. It’s meant to be a moving emotional crescendo to the film’s bloody conclusion, but the line that follows is just cheesy enough to produce eye rolls, but not so self-aware as to be funny. The result is a confusing melange of genre archetypes that lacks a clear point of view, even a surface-level stylistic one.
A dry seriousness haunts “Malignant” more than any murderous ghoul, though Wan flirts with flair in certain loud choices. Some — like the most horrific remix of “Where Is My Mind,” sure to offend Pixies fans the world over — wreak of a movie trying way too hard to be hip. Others, like a bird’s eye view pan of a house as Madison panic-scurries through each room...

"You've got to take chances, if you don't know you end making the same old thing again and again and again." Warner Bros has debuted the second trailer for Malignant, the new horror thriller from James Wan, returning to his roots with another original creation. This was initially set to open last summer, but was delayed due to the pandemic - now arriving in theaters + on HBO Max in September (watch the first trailer again). In this "new vision of terror", Madison is paralyzed by shocking visions of grisly murders, and her torment worsens as she discovers that these waking dreams are in fact terrifying realities. The cast includes Annabelle Wallis as Madison, Jake Abel, George Young, Jacqueline McKenzie, Mckenna Grace, Maddie Hasson, Ingrid Bisu, and Michole Briana White. This still seems to be a mix of Ring and A Nightmare on Elm Street, but with its own creepy twists and turns.

Of all the horror films on the release schedule, perhaps one of the most intriguing and enigmatic is James Wan's Malignant. Previously slated to come out last year, like many movies, Malginant was postponed due to the Covid-19 pandemic, but Warner Bros. has rescheduled the film for a theatrical and IMAX release on September 10th, along with a simultaneous HBO Max streaming release for 31 days.
Directed by Wan from a screenplay by Akela Cooper and J.T. Petty (based on a story idea by Wan and Ingrid Bisu), Malignant stars Annabelle Wallis, Maddie Hasson, George Young, Michole Briana White, Jake Abel, Jacqueline McKenzie, and Ingrid Bisu. The film is produced by Wan and Michael Clear.

"You're gonna have to decide which side you're on." Vertical Entertainment has unveiled an official trailer for Son of the South, a coming-of-age drama set in the turbulent times of the 1960s. This premiered at the American Black Film Festival last year, and it arrives on VOD next month. Lucas Till stars as a grandson of a Klansman who comes of age during the early 60's in the deep south and eventually joins the Civil Rights Movement. Based on Bob Zellner's autobiography "The Wrong Side of Murder Creek". The film's ensemble cast also features Lex Scott Davis, Lucy Hale, Jake Abel, Shamier Anderson, Ludi Lin, Dexter Darden, Sienna Guillory, Chaka Forman, with Cedric the Entertainer. This looks like it's trying to confront racism head on, but it's also another white savior story we've seen many times before. Check it out. This Supernatural review contains spoilers.
Supernatural Season 15, Episode 19
There’s only one. Episode. Left. Nervous?
Images of an empty world begin the episode, reinforcing that the Winchesters and Jack are basically all that’s left. An entire world emptied to prove Chuck right is a pretty harsh punishment, something he relishes when the boys call him out and decide to surrender — something they never do. But Chuck wants them to continue suffering. He likes this new twist to the story, and hopes the boys continue to put the blame and shame on themselves. Hey, at least all the disappeared didn’t have to deal with the rest of 2020, amirite?
Chuck’s cruelty is put on display when Dean discovers a lonely dog — likely the last of its kind. Dean names it Miracle and decides to keep it, which is when Chuck poofs the dog into smoke and smirks at the boys from afar.

It’s the start of a new year and a new (final) batch of “Supernatural” episodes, and what would such a beginning be without the Winchester brothers once again split apart from each other?
At the end of the eighth episode of the 15th season of the CW demon-hunting drama, Dean (Jensen Ackles) and Castiel (Misha Collins) were presumably heading back to purgatory after Michael (Jake Abel) opened a 12-hour rift. Meanwhile, Sam (Jared Padalecki) and Eileen were tricked and trapped by Chuck aka God (Rob Benedict).
When the season returns with an aptly-titled ninth episode called “The Trap” on Jan. 16, those pairs are working together to learn some new truths and try to stop Chuck.
“It’s really a chance to let both boys be the star of their own story,” showrunner Andrew Dabb tells Variety of the separation. “They’re together a lot, and we love to keep them together,...

A moment almost 10 years in the making finally came to fruition during Supernatural‘s fall finale when Dean and Sam’s quest to take down God led them to a reunion with their half-brother Adam.
Dean thinks the answer to stopping a weakened Chuck lies in the demon tablet, so the boys enlist Donatello to translate it, hoping to find a way to lock up God like he locked up his sister The Darkness. (Killing God would be very bad for creation, Sam explains.) Donatello discovers that the tablet includes annotations from Metatron about a secret fear of God’s that only Michael knows.

This Supernatural review contains spoilers.
“What is it with you people? Can’t anything you do be easy?” Donatello asked the Winchesters this episode. It would seem not, as they had to visit Hell, find Adam and Michael, and continue their drastic last-ditch efforts to spurn a vengeful Chuck in his world ending plans. The Winchesters’ lives are full of crazy scenarios and death defying odds, and there’s no slowing down on that now.
The mid-season finale brought back some notable characters, the biggest being Adam, Michael, and Rowena. The episode encapsulates the mission statement of this season to bring back fan favorites and tie up important loose ends.
Rowena’s scene in Hell was beautiful. She is completely in her element, commanding the forces of Hell and still helping the...

Supernatural is hosting one helluva complicated family reunion in this Thursday’s fall finale (The CW, 8/7c), with Jake Abel reprising his role as Dean and Sam’s long-lost brother Adam. The third Winchester also represents a potential threat to his half-siblings, seeing as how his homecoming means the powerful archangel Michael is back.
Below, Abel talks about his long-awaited return to the series and the challenges of playing both Adam and Michael in the same scene. The actor also previews Adam’s tension-filled reunion with Dean and Sam, as well as his brotherly relationship with Michael.
