"Historia: The Amazons", a "Wonder Woman" comic book story written by Kelly Sue DeConnick and illustrated by Phil Jimenez, Gene Ha and Nicola Scott for DC Comics' Black Label, was originally pitched as nine 64-page issues (576 pages in total) published as three graphic novels, now available as a hardcover edition:
"...a 'Homeric' epic of the lost history of the 'Amazons' and the rise to power of 'Queen Hippolyta', features monsters and myths, in a three-book saga.
"Millennia ago, 'Queen Hera' and the goddesses of the 'Olympian' pantheon grew greatly dissatisfied with their male counterparts…and far from their sight, they put a plan into action. A new society was born, one never before seen on Earth, capable of wondrous and terrible things…but their existence could not stay secret for long.

“The guy that delivers lunch makes more money on the movie than we do,” said writer and artist Jimmy Palmiotti, summing up the situation of comic book creators signing Hollywood deals that pay them little while corporations rake in billions.
The topic of creators getting a share of what they create was front and center Friday at Comic-Con during a panel titled “The Importance of Comic Creators Owning Their Own IP.”
The topic is very current, as earlier in the week The Hollywood Reporter exposed the very lopsided contracts writers and artists face when seeing the characters they create end up on screen.

This article contains some spoilers for the first two issues of DC’s Dark Crisis.
When DC Comics fans hear the word “crisis,” certain things spring to mind: crowded panels featuring luminaries from every corner of the DC multiverse, universe-shattering stakes, dramatic character deaths, and sometimes big changes for DC’s storytelling continuity itself. Several big events bearing the “Crisis” moniker have altered the history of the DC Universe. But Dark Crisis writer Joshua Williamson wants to assure everyone that things are a little different this time around.
“I don’t necessarily think that it has to involve rebooting anything,” Williamson tells Den of Geek via Zoom while idly paging through a hardcover omnibus of the original Crisis on Infinite Earths. “I don’t think that’s what we wanted to do. We really wanted to focus on making it more about the characters, and leveling up and putting a...

Last year, we said “…every work of art made in [2020] is a small miracle. Every comic creator who put irons in the fire in a year that certainly didn’t lack fires deserves gratitude and commendation.” That’s no less true in 2021, a year where days felt like months and each month somehow also passed like a half an hour. Creators who put themselves out there this year did so with even greater precarity and more than a dash of shattered hope. But they helped us get through it all, and we should be immensely grateful.

Jackpot may not exactly be considered an A-list Spider-Man comic book character to most fans, but Sony Pictures apparently sees superheroine solo movie potential, with the studio bringing such a project to the forefront—just a day after the report of another new one—by tapping a prolific writer from the realm of comic books and comic book television.
Marc Guggenheim has been hired to pen the script for a Jackpot movie, reports Deadline. The project will adapt the story of the titular female hero, born Sara Ehret. The character gained powers after she was accidentally exposed—while pregnant—to Lot 777, an experimental genetic cure for Parkinson’s Disease, which left her comatose for 4 months, after which she emerged with enhanced strength, stamina and durability after having her child. However, after taking the natural next step of becoming a superhero—officially registered as necessitated in a post-Civil War world—her...

Marc Guggenheim has been tapped to write the screenplay for female superhero movie “Jackpot,” from Sony’s Universe of Marvel Characters, according to an individual with knowledge of the project.
Guggenheim has written issues of the comic book, with Brian Reed. Jackpot made her first appearance in 2008’s “Spider-Man: Swing Shift #1” comic book, and was created by Dan Slott and Phil Jimenez.
“Jackpot” centers on Sara Ehret, a pregnant scientist who works at a subsidiary of Oscorp named Phelcorp. Ehret works on gene therapy to cure Parkinson’s disease when she is accidentally exposed to “Lot 777,” a virus that rewrote the DNA in her cells leaving her in a coma for 4 months. Coming out of her coma Ehret went on to have her child Madeline with no complications, however when her family came under threat by falling debris she displayed superhuman strength to save them. Jim Lee, the legendary comic artist turned publisher turned DC Comics executive, has spent most of his social distancing putting up huge for local comic shops. He’s been furiously sketching some awesome characters, then auctioning them off on eBay. The Binc Foundation, the charity that supports book stores in times of crisis, has seen an influx of cash thanks to the work of the comics great, to the tune of $230,000 so far. Previous sketches have been of Cyborg, Darkseid, Bane, Grifter and Zealot, and others.
And this time, he’s doing it with another Batman villain (and Harley Quinn confidante) Poison Ivy. Lee first spent time with Ivy on the celebrated Batman: Hush story, and this is a stunning look at the character.
Lee has raised an enormous sum for Binc – by the time this auction closes, he will have likely surpassed the $250,000 pledged by DC Comics to the charity,...

Dan Abnett tells us all about the craziness in store for Titans during the Drowned Earth event and we have an exclusive Titans #28 preview!
Dan Abnett casts a long shadow in comics. Almost no one this side of James Gunn and his co-writer at the time, Andy Lanning, is more responsible for the Guardians of the Galaxy we all love on the big screen, and as a solo writer, he's had as much influence as anybody on the world of Aquaman. He's also been helming Titans, the post-Rebirth book that has followed the first wave of sidekicks who seem to be at the center of the Rebirth mystery. And now, between Batman, Heroes in Crisis, and Drowned Earth they're also all mostly dead or battling intergalactic ocean deities.

Sony Pictures is developing yet another Marvel movie. This one is based on the character Jackpot. While Variety confirmed that the previously reported Silk and Nightwatch are in development, they also revealed that Jackpot is being developed as well.
Many of you might not be familiar with the character Jackpot, and if that's the case, she's a registered hero with The Initiative who fights crime in New York City. She has superhuman strength, durability, and endurance.
Jackpot a.k.a. Sara Ehret was created by Dan Slott and Phil Jimenez and she first appeared in the Free Comic Book Day 2007 comic book. Here's a little background on the character:

If anything, 2018 is proving to be a time for innovation over at DC Comics. Not only have they kicked off their New Age of Heroes initiative, but there’s also that matter of the Sandman Universe giving fans something to look forward to. The fun doesn’t stop there, either, as the publisher has now pulled back the curtain on what’s being called DC Black Label.
Basically, this new imprint affords all-star creative teams the luxury of playing around with the most iconic superheroes around, only without the drag of continuity. As such, it causes us to wonder if the massive hit that is Batman: White Knight was the catalyst for this endeavor, but we’ll take any story that pushes the envelope, no matter what the inspiration.
Naturally, those involving the Caped Crusader will be among those that garner the most attention, with Batman: Damned leading the way.

Having earned over $800 million, Wonder Woman has proven itself on many levels. In a year that started, more or less, with Hidden Figures, and with a summer that had three hits featuring women (the others being Atomic Blonde and Girls Trip) the female half of the movie going audience is finally receiving their due. Director Patty Jenkins has certainly shattered some records and glass ceilings along the way while Gal Gadot has now proven she can open a movie.
With Wonder Woman out today on Blu-ray from Warner Home Video, we have a chance to look back and enjoy it all over again. While it fits neatly in the larger DC Cinematic Universe thanks to the framing sequence, the movie largely works on its own with a vastly superior tone and vision than its predecessors.

If not, here’s the gist of it: Every year on the first Saturday in May, all of the top comic book publishers send out a title or two for participating retailers to hand out. Not only does this provide an opportunity to reel in new readers, but it also increases foot traffic in those shops, kind of making it the industry’s equivalent of Black Friday.
Interestingly enough, June 3 will bring something similar to the table when the first Wonder Woman Day is scheduled to be celebrated. Arriving a day after the major motion picture debuts in cinemas, a...

As much as we’d love to have superheroes here in the real world to help us through the darkest of times, we have to accept that it’s unfortunately not going to happen. Still, that doesn’t mean these characters can’t inspire, effectively bringing out the best in us when our fellow man needs us most. Thankfully, this notion isn’t lost on the talented people who currently bring these icons to life, thus bringing about Love is Love.

This past week I finished watching Iron Fist. I also went to a discussion at Manhattan’s Strand bookstore on queer representation in comics, with speakers including Jennifer Camper and Phil Jimenez, but I really want to focus on Iron Fist. Well, I checked out some of the old MST3K episodes they just added to Netflix too. That last part actually ties into my Iron Fist discussion. Yes, really.
The Internet has been flooded with reactions to Iron Fist that have been all over the place. Praise to malaise. I had already seen all the other Marvel Netflix series so I was diving in regardless of what the critics had to say. I got through it all in about days of watching.
It was a rough three days.
I’m not going to get too deep into spoilers, but if you want a 100% spoiler free viewing experience of Iron Fist...

Things are certainly picking up for Slade Wilson, as he’ll soon find himself as the lynchpin in DC’s crossover event this May, “The Lazarus Contract.” Set to span four books – Titans, Teen Titans, Deathstroke and a Teen Titans Annual – it will place Wally West directly in the crosshairs of the world’s deadliest assassin, who aims to resurrect the original Ravager, his son Grant.
Luckily, we’ll get a great sense of cohesion when you take into account that the regular writers for each participating series – Dan Abnett, Benjamin Percy and Christopher Priest – will join their great minds and co-write every issue that’s part of the crossover.
Suffice it to say, this project couldn’t come at a more opportune time when you consider that the animated film Teen Titans: The Judas...

The Superman family of titles have certainly been on a hot streak since Rebirth kicked off last summer as each have not only provided a fantastic read, but also charted new territory for the Man of Steel and his various supporting characters. One such ongoing that has caught many by surprise is that of Superwoman.
Starting off by throwing one of the most memorable curveballs in recent memory by killing off the New 52 version of Lois Lane and instead making Lana Lang the titular heroine, writer Phil Jimenez has succeeded in getting fans everywhere talking, if nothing else.
But as of April, it looks as though K. Perkins will be taking his spot, at least for one story arc. Having previously co-written some Supergirl stories with Mike Johnson and penned a contribution to a Superman/Wonder Woman Annual by her lonesome, it stands to reason that she’ll be comfortable working within this world.

Before I go into this week’s column, I wanted to acknowledge the passing of Carrie Fisher. Mere hours after my column went up last week it was reported that she had passed. It was truly tragic for her family, friends and legions of fans whom include myself. Rest in peace, Carrie Fisher.
Last week I picked Love Is Love, the joint DC Comics and Idw publication to raise money for Equality Florida benefiting the victims of the Pulse Nightclub mass shooting. I had written about this book’s announcement back in September and how it filled me with pride that this was happening, but that comics still has more to do towards creating stronger queer inclusion. Now that the trade is out and I got the chance to read it, I have more to say.
This charity project organized by Marc Andreyko was originally a joint project with DC Comics and Idw.

Now that Christmas is done and gone, and no doubt our debt and weight gone up we begin to look toward the New Year. 2016 was a great year for comic books in general, with the rise of a lot of great independent books from publishers like Image and Aftershock. DC Comics in a sense apologized for the New 52 and DC You with their sensational “Rebirth” line that was launched by Geoff Johns. Marvel continued to do what they do best, put out number ones. With titles like “Champions”, “Death of X”, “Civil War II” and their recent event “Ivx” putting the X-Men vs. the Inhumans.
No doubt that the comic book team here at LRMOnline.com has been kept very busy all year picking up a ridiculous number of books week to week. Our passion for the comic book industry is undeniable as we all go above and beyond to...

A little late this time around, but never forgotten! This week I take a quick look at the developing stories from DC’s Rebirth line up. While not a huge week for story development, we do get to wrap up a few plots and open the doors to a few more!
Action Comics #965
Story: Dan Jurgens Art: Stephen Segovia, Art Thibert, Arif Prianto, Dave Sharpe
Review: So with Superman seemingly unable to prove anything nefarious about this new Clark Kent, it’s up to Lois to try to figure out what’s going on! To do that she pretends to the Lois Lane of New 52 Universe, and as expected things don’t go completely as planned. Jurgens continues to do an excellent job here with how he handles the characters. Everyone feels right, in that their motivations, manner of speech and actions...

Last week DC Comics and Idw announced will join together to publish a 144 page graphic novel titled Love Is Love to raise money for Equality Florida to help the victims of the Pulse Nightclub shooting in Orlando, Fl on June 12th. Let’s let that one sink in. This is an important moment in comics history. Of all the causes over the years that comics have tried to benefit, this is the first time that mainstream comics publishers have stepped up to benefit members of the Lgbt community in need. This is also the second time an anthology has come out to benefit victims of the Pulse Nightclub shooting as Margins Publishing put out two issues of a digital zine titled Our Hearts Still Beat where 100% of the...

Comic Book Reviews: DC Round Up Week 09-14-2016
DC is settling into its new focused style of content storytelling, and producing some fantastic stories thanks to the new approach. While mostly everything has been a hit, there have been a few snags as well. One issue I keep having is trying to figure out how it all “fits” together in a bigger picture. Some books seem closer connected others; some appear not connected all to the larger DC Universe. This might not be a problem for most, it can be a little jarring for me, when I’m reading Batgirl is running around Japan in her book, but is also hanging out with Huntress and Black Canary in the Birds of Prey series, while appearing in Nightwing and referencing her time currently in Japan, but Black Canary appears in Green Arrow without any indication she’s even been to Gotham or around Batgirl.

Scott Snyder is back on Batman in an "all –star" way! (see what I did there?) as he teams up with two fantastic artist in Veteran John Romita Jr. and upcoming superstar Declan Shalvey. How does it hold up to his previous Batman New 52 run? Well read on to see! Also we get the return of the deadliest man in the world -- Deathstroke -- which was penned by the super talented Christopher Priest.

I’m a huge fan of Tyler Kirkham and Patrick Bircher, and equally a huge fan of Stephen Segovia! And, to be fair,...

With the Joker back on the big screen in Suicide Squad, we celebrate the craziest plans of the Clown Prince of Crime...
He's the greatest villain of them all. He's the evil that tests Batman and makes the hero better. He's an uncontrollable force of chaos, more akin to a hurricane than a criminal, who strikes without warning. He believes that life is a chaotic farce and everything exists as part of a twisted game between him and Batman. He is the star of comics, television, cartoons, and film. He's the Joker, one of the most enduring symbols of evil in the last century.
The Joker is no match for Batman physically, so when he puts one over on the Dark Knight, when he 'gets' him, it has to be a masterpiece of chaos and violence. These are just some of the greatest moments where the Joker...

Warning: Spoilers for DC Universe: Rebirth #1, Superman: Rebirth #1, Batman: Rebirth #1, Green Arrow: Rebirth #1, and Green Lanterns: Rebirth #1 follow. The last couple of weeks have been pretty eventful for DC Comics and its fans. Word came down relatively recently about a major course-change happening as the publisher's film adaptations at Warner Bros. continue to progress, and last week the publishing arm of the company released their own major course change – which many would likely classify as a correction – in the form of DC Universe: Rebirth #1. This issue, written by longtime comics writer and future DC Films overseer Geoff Johns with art by grade-a talent like Gary Frank, Ethan Van Sciver, Phil Jimenez, and Ivan Reis, presented...

So Mike Gold, our old and grumpy and sly editor, threw down the gauntlet last week, challenging the marvelous Marc Fishman and the grammatically incorrect me to read the same comic and opine on it. That comic was DC Rebirth #1, the umpteenth revision of the company’s four-color mythos. Marc had his turn on Saturday. Today is mine.
Unlike Marc, I didn’t have travel a long and hard road 45 minutes from my suburban home to another suburb “to make a transaction.” Unlike Marc, I live in a city and the nearest comics store is three blocks away. However, I’m not a particular fan of this four-color emporium – I used to have a fantastic shop six blocks away where I browsed and hung out and bought for many decades, but it closed because of the owner’s illness – so I downloaded and read the e-comic version.
First the positives:

I started reading comics in the “New 52” era. In fact Scott Snyder was already in his second arc in Batman. Lucky for me one of my closest friends made sure that I read certain stories from DC Comics amazing legacy. For example Flashpoint Paradox, The Dark Knight Returns, Watchmen, Crisis on Infinite Earths, Death of Superman, Blackest Night and so on and so on. So much rich history in characters and story arcs, that to this day I am still trying to catch up with. A lot of that past had gotten lost within the New 52 and DC You, changing a lot these “legacy” characters and in the process making long time readers very uncomfortable. Enter Geoff John’s rebirth.
Without giving too much away, Geoff John’s does a brilliant job at using pre New 52 Wally West as a narrator and as the main character in our journey through Rebirth.

After making some huge (and unfortunately controversial) announcements about Thor and Captain America before San Diego Comic Con, Marvel fleshed out future developments involving these characters and their titles. They also announced the first Star Wars comics since getting the license from Dark Horse. More details can be found in this article. A bulk of the announcements had to do with the upcoming “Spider-Verse” event spinning out of Dan Slott’s Amazing Spider-Man run, which will include every Spider-Man that Marvel currently has the rights to. We've got a Fringe screening and Q&A, Doctor Who, Buffy the Vampire Slayer 20th Anniversary, Sons of Anarchy, the annual Buffy the Vampire Slayer musical screening, and more! I've always wanted to go the Buffy musical sing-a-long, but am usually trying to leave San Diego before it starts.

We'll be wearing our GeekTyrant shirts, so if you see us walking around San Diego and the convention center, please stop and and say hi! We'd love to meet our readers. We will also be holding our annual meet-up on Wednesday night before the crazy geek storm.
Check out the schedule below and let us know what panels you'll be attending,...

Warren Ellis: Captured Ghosts
Director: Patrick Meaney | Director of photography: Jordan Rennert
“Warren Ellis sees the future. He is a comic book writer and cyberpunk philosopher living on the edge of tomorrow. He speaks to a cult audience of artists, journalists, scientists and fans who hail him as Internet Jesus.
The film features the most extensive interview Ellis has ever given, and spans his life, from his first memory watching the moon landing as a child, to his recent cross-media success with the film adaptation of Red. Along the way, Ellis’s acerbic wit and core belief in humanity comes across like never before.
Complimenting Ellis’s own words are interviews with his artistic collaborators, friends and admirers from across all media, including actress Helen Mirren, Director Joss Whedon (Buffy The Vampire Slayer), comedian Patton Oswalt, Adult Film Star Stoya, Musician Claudio Sanchez (of Coheed and Cambria), comics writers Matt Fraction and Antony Johnston,...

DC Comics isn't just trying to reach out to new readers in comics shops this year. The new trailer for their company-wide "New 52" reboot is going to be shown on TV and in movie theaters in order to appeal to wider masses. That strategy received some support in the Twitter-stream last night, though J.M. DeMatteis thought it looked dark, and Gail Simone called for rougher language.
It was a good night for sketches, too, as Phil Jimenez posted a Wonder Woman piece he made, and Cameron Stewart gave Batman a go using an iPad. Gaze upon their art and learn a thing or two about being British from Warren Ellis after the jump.
Those tweets and more ranked atop the Twitter Report for August 17, 2011.
DC trailer pt. 1: @JMDeMatteis I thought the Dcu was a place filled with hope. The New 52 commercial makes the entire universe seem like Gotham City on a very bad day.
