- Helen Levitt was born on August 31, 1913 in Brooklyn, New York City, New York, USA. She was a cinematographer and editor, known for The Quiet One (1948), An Affair of the Skin (1963) and Another Light (1952). She died on March 29, 2009 in Manhattan, New York City, New York, USA.
- Her first major exhibition took place in 1943 at the Museum of Modern Art (New York). Several more shows followed over the next 60 years.
- She bought a used Leica camera in 1936, and started taking pictures of life on city streets, especially children. New York's Lower East Side and East Harlem were favorite settings.
- She wanted to be an artist, but had no talent for drawing. She left high school just shy of graduation, and got a job in a photography studio.
- People think I love children, but I don't. Not more than the next person. It was just that children were out in the street.
- I never intend to make statements in my pictures. People say, "What does this or that mean?". I don't have a good answer for them. You see what you see.
