Fittingly enough, it was hot as blazes in Kentucky when Mitch McConnell slunk back home for Congress’ annual summer recess. One week earlier, Robert Mueller had testified that Russia was meddling in the 2020 U.S. elections. McConnell, the Senate majority leader, responded by shooting down Democrats’ efforts to bring two election-security bills to a vote — bills that McConnell, in his familiar fashion, had previously sentenced to quiet deaths after they passed the House. Back in October, we officially opened the doors to our Corpse Club membership system, and we're grateful from beyond the grave for everyone who has joined to support Daily Dead and our creative time of writers, artists, and podcasters. To show our gratitude, Corpse Club members received exclusive access to our special Roseanne Halloween podcast episode, and now we're continuing to give thanks to our subscribers by giving them the gift of a new audio commentary to Wes Craven's Scream 2.
Just as groundbreaking to horror sequels as its predecessor was to the slasher subgenre, Scream 2 celebrates its 20th anniversary this December, making it the perfect time for Corpse Club co-hosts Patrick Bromley and Heather Wixson to pack their bags and follow Woodsboro survivor Sidney Prescott to Windsor College in a new audio commentary to Wes Craven's 1997 horror film.

As a producer on projects like Starry Eyes and The Sacrament, Camera Obscura co-writer/director Aaron B. Koontz has been a fixture of the indie horror film community for some time now. Koontz recently celebrated the VOD and On Demand release of his debut feature, Camera Obscura, which ambitiously blends together the psychological horror/haunted camera/slasher genres for a truly unexpected cinematic treat.
Daily Dead recently had the opportunity to speak to Koontz about his experiences working on Camera Obscura, and he discussed how he approached both the story of the film as well as its conflicted protagonist, Jack Zeller (portrayed by Christopher Denham), how his earlier career helped prepare him to take the directorial reins, the joy of being able to collaborate with friends, and more.

Just in case you were feeling anxious about who would win Dancing With the Stars‘ 24th season, the ABC series found a way to calm your nerves on Tuesday night: by stretching its finale across two-and-a-half hours.

[Editor’s Note: The following review of “Doctor Who” Season 10, Episode 1, “The Pilot,” contains spoilers.]
The Rundown
Finally, finally! After a year without a proper season, “Doctor Who” returned and felt familiar and comfortable, no mean feat when introducing a new companion. The episode lulled viewers and Bill Potts (Pearl Mackie) into complacency first by setting much of the early action at St. Luke’s University in Bristol, before shifting to the more spectacular aspects of the Whoniverse we all know and love. Overall, the premiere did well to set up a rapport between Twelve and Bill, while teasing out a few story arcs to come.

Here Be Monsters
Among the pantheon of Whovian monsters and aliens, the creature we met wasn’t exciting nor even threatening so much as misunderstood. We don’t even have a name for the liquefied, sentient shape-shifting, time-traveling goo that appeared first as a puddle which incorrectly reflected a person’s image.

Amid the cosy repeats, big movies and inescapable cranberry-stuffed cookery shows on TV this month are a few original gems. Reece Shearsmith and Steve Pemberton’s Inside No. 9 festive special The Devil Of Christmas (Tuesday the 27th of December, 10pm, BBC Two) is top of our must-watch list. Hot on its heels is Yonderland’s family friendly Yonder Yuletide (Saturday the 24th of December, 6.30pm, Sky One). Another for families on Sky is the Christmas Day Jasper Fforde adaptation The Last Dragonslayer, while Channel 4 has the non-festive-but-essential-for-fans-of smart-sci-fi Humans series two finale (Sunday the 18th of December, 9pm).

Not since Busta Rhymes challenged Michael Myers to a kung fu fight has one moment in a horror movie so signified that a beloved franchise had completely lost its mind. But unlike Halloween: Resurrection, which represents the desperate, pandering death rattle of the Halloween franchise, those four words spoken near the end of 2013’s Texas Chainsaw find the series embracing a lunacy it had left behind for 20 years and attempting to inject new blood into Tobe Hooper’s dynasty. Literally. [Spoilers for Texas Chainsaw follow.]
Though it made a boatload of money upon its January 2013 release (about two and a half times its $20 million budget), Texas Chainsaw—originally called Texas Chainsaw 3D, as it was the first in the series released in the 3D format—is the kind of widely reviled sequel that most horror fans mention in conversations about the worst modern franchise films, standing alongside Jason Goes to Hell...

If you’re asking why we need another found footage movie – let alone another sequel to The Blair Witch Project – then you don’t watch enough horror movies. The reality is simple. If it wasn’t now, then it’d happen sometime in the future. And if you’re complaining that Blair Witch doesn’t do anything “different,” well then you Certainly don’t watch enough found footage schlock, because if you sifted through the same handy-cam trash I do on a monthly – nay, Weekly – basis, you’d be thanking Adam Wingard and Simon Barrett, not questioning their surprise horror sequel.

I love a heartwarming, feel-good romance story just as much as the next person, but sometimes, it’s those doomed cinematic relationships that tend to stick with you the most. One of the more interesting ill-fated couples I recently encountered was Rob (Cian Barry) and Holly (Abigail Hardingham) from Nina Forever. The new couple must endure the looming presence of Rob’s ex-girlfriend, Nina (Fiona O’Shaughnessy), who died recently in a car accident and happens to show up anytime they become intimate.
The pitch-black comedy touches on a lot of the complications that come with modern relationships and all the proverbial baggage we endure as a result of our previous romantic entanglements. It really struck me throughout the story just how well directors Ben and Chris Blaine perfectly explore those themes in Nina Forever, making me realize that some of my very favorite movie love affairs, particularly from the 1980s,...

With the release of Tremors 5: Bloodlines last week, we thought this would be a perfect time to speak with Jonathan Melville, author of the recent book, Seeking Perfection: The Unofficial Guide to Tremors, which takes a look back at the original film, the Tremors sequels, and the ill-fated television series.
What inspired you to celebrate the Tremors films in book form (beyond the fact that they’re awesome fun)?
Jonathan Melville: I remember watching Tremors on BBC One here in the UK in 1994 (I was 16) and immediately falling for the mix of comedy, horror, sci-fi, western and romance that I hadn’t seen in any other film.
From then on I kept stumbling across the sequels; I rented Tremors 2 from a VHS store while on holiday in Canada and the others on video and DVD when they came out—and each time enjoyed the way the franchise evolved. There...

Charlie Lyne's documentary Beyond Clueless harks back to the classic teen movies that shaped the '90s.
Featuring narration from The Craft's Fairuza Balk (and with clips of Robin Tunney, Devon Sawa and co), it made us feel a sudden pang of nostalgia and sent us on our own trip down memory lane to find out where they - and the rest of the '90s teen movie crew - are now.
So, here are 11 stars from some of our favourite '90s teen movies, and what they've gone on to do since:
1. Devon Sawa - Idle Hands (1999)
Dreamy Devon Sawa starred as lazy stoner Anton Tobias - who turns mass murderer after his hand becomes possessed - in the horror comedy Idle Hands.
He went on to play teenage prophet of doom Alex Browning in Final Destination (2000), and appeared as similarly unstable Stan in Eminem's controversial music...

Alex takes a look back at one of the most, er, not bad films ever made. It's Highlander III. It's better than Highlander II at least...
My introduction to the Highlander franchise came not through the original film, or the sequel, or the surprisingly alright TV series. It instead came from a promo video for Highlander IV: The Final Dimension, the music video of my favourite ever piece of music, James’ Honest Joe.
This is remarkable for several reasons. Firstly, this “song” (if it can be called that) was never a single, and is obscure enough to render a music video superfluous at best. Secondly, the song does not feature in the film (despite being in the credits, I’ve yet to see a version that actually includes it). Finally, at the time there was no Highlander IV, it was, in fact, Highlander III. Yes, this is a film so...

Jim Henson’s Creature Shop Challenge is the latest SFX show from Syfy, following their successful make-up competition show Face/Off. In anticipation of the series debut we talked to Brian Henson, chairman of the Jim Henson Company and also the head judge on the Syfy series, about the new creature building competition series.
Can you tease a bit of some of the creatures we’re going to see coming up, since we’ve only seen what’s in the first one?
Brian Henson: Well, we keep it a little bit secret because that’s part of the fun so I won’t tell you too much. I will say that creatures in general – there’s a really wide range that you can do depending on if they’re small or they’re large or what kind of technique you’re using. Is it more fabrication or is it more mechanization?...

After earning an Oscar nomination for her role in the Coen Brothers’ Western True Grit, then training to battle aliens in last November’s Ender’s Game, Hailee Steinfeld appears to be taking a page out of fellow teen star Chloë Grace Moretz’s book for her next leading role. In the action comedy Barely Lethal, she’ll play a teenaged assassin named Megan (à la Moretz’s Hit-Girl from Kick-Ass), who attempts to live a normal life and attend high school after faking her own death to escape from the boarding school that trained her.
Two images from Barely Lethal have hit the web today, courtesy of Entertainment Weekly, and you can check them both out at the bottom of this article.
It’s a little unclear who Steinfeld is shielding in the first image, but that’s clearly Samuel L. Jackson giving her a stern talking-to in the second still.

Oh, we sort of thought the kids-shooting-guns-and-kicking-ass-for-laughs genre was done after no one cared about "Kick-Ass 2." Guess not. Another movie in a similar shape, though perhaps with a bit of "Hanna" and "Salt" thrown in too is on the way with "Barely Lethal." The first images from the movie are here via EW, with "True Grit" star Hailee Steinfeld as the kid trying to have a normal high school life until she's forced to use her special skills again. Samuel L. Jackson has the Nic Cage role in this one that will open in the fall. Official synopsis below. Weary of her life as a teenage Special Ops Agent, ‘Megan’ (Hailee Steinfeld) fakes her own death and enrolls in a suburban high school. Hoping to live the life of a “normal” teenager, she discovers that being popular, dating, and fitting in isn’t as easy as she thought. Complicating matters...

Happy 2014 Everyone! Looking back, I thought 2013 was an exceptional year for horror, especially for independent genre fare that ended making up most of my favorite films over the last 12 months. In fact, 2013 ended up being so good, even a number of remakes that came out this year managed to be as strong as their original horror peers and that’s pretty damn impressive.
Here’s a look at some of my very favorite things that happened in horror along the way during 2013:
John Dies at the End:
I’d been waiting patiently to see Don Coscarelli’s John Dies at the End ever since I chatted him up about the project at SXSW 2012. Thankfully, the film didn’t disappoint at all when it was released last January. Wonderfully weird and oddly heartfelt, no one has quite mastered the art of the unexpected like Coscarelli has throughout his career...

Syfy has ordered an amazing-sounding reality series. Jim Henson’s Creature Shop Challenge will basically be the creature version of Face Off with Jim Henson‘s son, Brian Henson as lead judge.
CBS has made it possible to watch the pilot Super Clyde online. The rejected comedy, from Raising Hope and My Name is Earl producer Greg Garcia, starred Rupert Grint as a fast food worker who receives an inheritance and uses it to become a superhero. Stephen Fry plays Clyde‘s butler, Tyler Labine plays Clyde’s brother and overall the pilot shows a frustrating amount of promise. Even if there won’t be more episodes, it’s worth watching for fans of Garcia’s previous shows.
Plus, who can say no to Rupert Grint in a sidecar?
It’s official. Jennie Garth has joined Tori Spelling‘s ABC Family pilot Mystery Girls.
You can add The Six Million Dollar Man...

There’s a wonderfully maddening moment early on in Stanley Kubrick’s The Shining where Danny Torrance is perusing the corridors of the Overlook hotel on his tricycle. He swings round corners, the camera obsessively following him in a locked in third person perspective angle. The skin crawling score by Wendy Carlos and Rachel Elkind swells up with each turn, suggesting he is about to crash into a stable of horror. But he never does. Instead even as the music climaxes he simply finds more empty hallways to roll down. For an audience who likely identify his encounter later on in identical circumstances as the film’s most iconic scene, this sequence is nerve shattering because it refuses to release tension by actually delivering on what it seems to build up to. This is one of many such tricks of subtle teasing that Kubrick delivers, a myriad of near misses...

The Kings of Summer empathises with two high school kids, Joe (Nick Robinson) and Patrick (Gabriel Basso), who trade their exasperated suburban living for an unconventional residency deep in the forest. With the assistance of affable yet creepy tag-along Biaggio (Moises Arias), the boys transform scraps of wood into an implausibly well-structured new home for fostering their abrupt adult life. As you’d expect, harsh lessons are soon learned.
Jordan Vogt-Roberts’ debut feature doesn’t establish anything especially new or bold as far as coming-of-age tales are concerned. Its thematic arc is well-trodden, concluding on general sentiments of self-sacrifice and the inherent worth of family and friendship, however fractured.
As a tale of misunderstood children escaping from their parents, Kings smacks of Moonrise Kingdom, except without any of the flavoursome aesthetic that lent that film its warmth. The odd glimpse of a liberating nature is savoured here in brief, slow motion breezes,...

Glee returned last night with one of the most emotionally charged episodes in the show's four-season history. As gunshots rang out in the halls of McKinley High, the choir members found themselves in one of the scariest situations imaginable.
What was filming that scene like? We recently had the opportunity to chat with one of Hollywood's nicest stars, Dot Marie Jones who plays Coach Shannon Beiste, as she shared some behind the scenes insight into "Shooting Star" and playing everyone's favorite football coach since Eric Taylor.

Daddy issues and spy games abounded this week, as Castle concluded its suspenseful two-parter with "Hunt.

Jim: I loved Kate reaching the end of her rope with the girlfriend and kicking her her over in her chair and then flinging the pictures at her. If for no other reason than she called Rick her "partner," which I loved!
Chandel: Probably the sequence where we got to see father and son in action saving Alexis. It was nice to move beyond the father shocker quickly, but still have it flow seamlessly...
