Marvel star Mark Ruffalo has entered into negotiations to reunite with Chris Hemsworth on Amazon MGM Studio’s adaptation of ‘Crime 101.’
Based on author Don Winslow’s novella of the same name, the novella tells the story of a string of high-level jewel heists up and down the Pacific Coast Highway that has gone unsolved for years, mostly because the perpetrator has lived by a strict code he calls “Crime 101”. Police attribute the thefts to the Colombian cartels. But Detective Lou Lubesnick’s gut says it’s the work of just one man.

Exclusive: Mark Ruffalo is in talks to star in Amazon MGM Studios adaptation of Don Winslow’s novella Crime 101. He will co-star with Chris Hemsworth, who also is in talks to star and produce alongside producing partner Ben Grayson. The film will be released in theaters next year.
While plot details are being kept under wraps, the original short story by Winslow has shades of Heat as it follows high-level jewel thefts that are taking place up and down the Pacific Coast, which police have linked to Colombian cartels. Detective Lou Lubesnick has other ideas, and he zeroes in on one perp, a thief looking for a final score.

It’s slightly ironic that Tinder has chosen London’s creative neighborhood of Shoreditch as a key target for its first global ad campaign, splashing some major spend on scores of bold, brightly colored billboards asserting that it all “starts with a swipe.” Although the area’s demographic — hectic, switched-on 20- and 30-somethings forever glued to their phones and laptops — would seem the perfect audience, it’s unlikely that many realize that just around the corner from the hoardings sits the company responsible for making the dating app’s most notorious swiper globally famous.

In a casting that raises several questions, Ben Stiller is in final talks to star in “Three Identical Strangers,” a limited series adaptation of the acclaimed documentary film, according to Variety.
The 2018 film, which was directed by Tim Wardle and won the U.S. Documentary Special Jury Award for Storytelling at the Sundance Film Festival, tells the story of Bobby Shafran, David Kellman, and Eddy Galland — three identical triplets who meet by chance as adults, and the revelation of the undisclosed scientific experiment that separated them by birth. Upon its release, “Three Identical Strangers” received positive reviews, and made the shortlist for the Oscars’ Best Documentary Feature category.
Stiller will play all three of the brothers as adults. What makes his casting unusual is that Galland died by suicide in 1995, when he was 34. Stiller is currently 57, nearly 25 years older than Galland was at time of death. In addition, the meat...

Exclusive: A team of prestigious documentary makers are teaming on what should be a hotly anticipated factual project – a feature doc coming to Netflix based on serial killer Dennis Nilsen’s recent posthumously-published autobiography, in which he confessed to three more attacks.
Nilsen, who killed at least 12 young men and boys between 1978 and 1983 and died in prison in 2018, was recently played by David Tennant in the well-received drama Des last year. An edited version of his autobiography, The History Of A Drowning Boy, which was written in prison and stretched to 6,000 pages, was published last week. The book drew criticism from the families of Nilsen’s victims but it was defended by its editors as valuable insight into the mind of a killer.

On Friday’s “Gold Rush,” former high-school wrestling coach Fred Lewis finally pins down his first gold nugget — and his elated team’s reaction is rich.

Lewis, a veteran (he was a medic in the special forces), just began in the gold-mining game after losing his regular job due to the coronavirus pandemic. The same is true about most of his crew members working the Oregon fields, so this successful Col. Nugget clean-up is extra special.
With fellow veteran and experienced miner Kendell Madden by his side, Lewis leased a piece of ground with huge prospects. The down payment came down to Fred’s last $20,000, as the “Gold Rush” narrator states in our preview clip. As their journey takes them in increasingly dangerous and unexpected directions, the boys need to confront hard truths and leave their childhoods behind. Cochrane will play the lead FBI agent who goes after the family.
Michael Pearce (Beast) is directing the feature and writing with fellow BAFTA-nominee Joe Barton (Giri/Haji). Producers are Raw’s Dimitri Doganis (Three Identical Strangers), Piers Vellacott (American Animals) and Derrin Schlesinger (The Nest).

Gold Rush producer Raw Television has secured its first commission from Netflix — a three-part documentary on a man who went viral for killing kittens and was later convicted of murdering a Chinese student in 2012.
The All3Media-owned indie, which made Emmy-nominated Three Identical Strangers last year, is producing Don’t F**k With Cats: Hunting An Internet Killer, which will premiere on Netflix on December 18.

Yorgos Lanthimos’s acclaimed comedy-drama The Favourite won a record ten awards at the British Independent Film Awards (Bifa) in London tonight.
The film won Best British Independent Film, Best Director and Best Screenplay sponsored by BBC Films. Olivia Colman maintained her perfect record of winning at Bifa every time she is nominated and took home her fourth Bifa trophy.
Her performance as Queen Anne was awarded Best Actress. Her co-star Rachel Weisz was named Best Supporting Actress; Weisz won at Bifa for The Constant Gardener in 2005. The five awards on the night took the tally for The Favourite to ten, added to its five craft awards announced earlier this month for Best Casting, Best Cinematography, Best Costume Design, Best Make Up & Hair Design and Best Production Design.
The Fox Searchlight charge is rolling into the awards season on a high having garnered acclaim out of the gate at the Venice Film Festival.

The awards shows will continue until morale improves. That’s good news for Yorgos Lanthimos’ “The Favourite,” which got off to a great start by winning both Best Actress for Olivia Colman and a Special Grand Jury Prize at the Venice Film Festival and now leads all movies with 13 nominations at the British Independent Film Awards. Following it are “American Animals” (11), “Beast” (10), and “You Were Never Really Here” (8); all are nominated for the top prize, as is “Disobedience.”
Also well represented is Rachel Weisz, whose roles in “Disobedience” and “The Favourite” have her up for both Best Actress and Best Supporting Actress, respectively; her co-stars in both films — Olivia Colman and Emma Stone in “The Favourite,” Rachel McAdams in “Disobedience” — are all nominated as well.

Yorgos Lanthimos’ Venice Special Grand Jury Prize winner The Favourite leads nominations for this year’s British Independent Film Awards with 13 in its court. The twisted take on the British monarchy and period cinema, which Fox Searchlight releases November 23 in North America, has nods for Venice Best Actress laureate Olivia Colman as well as for Best Film, Director, Screenplay and for its supporting cast Emma Stone and Rachel Weisz. The latter is also up for Best Actress in Oscar winner Sebastian Lelio’s Disobedience, which likewise scored a Best Film nom and put Rachel McAdams in the Supporting Actress category.
Following The Favourite is Bart Layton’s heist pic American Animals with 11 nominations, Michael Pearce’s Beast with 10 and Lynne Ramsay’s You Were Never Really Here scooping eight. Each is also competing in the Best British Independent Film race.
Bifa noted today that the nominations list demonstrates a record year for female representation, with over 40% of the individual nominations recognizing women in the industry across directing, writing, producing, performance and craft. Female nominees make up over 50% of the talent nominated in Best British Independent Film and dominate both Most Promising Newcomer and Breakthrough Producer.
Ramsay notably continues her long association with Bifa, scoring her third nomination for Best Screenplay and her second for Best Director. With her You Were Never Really Here, Joaquin Phoenix scores his second Bifa Best Actor nomination for his role as a tortured hitman in the psychological noir thriller.
Joe Cole (A Prayer Before Dawn), Rupert Everett (The Happy Prince), Charlie Plummer (Lean On Pete) and Steve Coogan (Stan & Ollie) round out Best Actor. The Best Actress category also features Gemma Arterton (The Escape), Maxine Peake (Funny Cow) and Jessie Buckley (Beast).

After buying North American rights to Three Identical Strangers, Tim Wardle’s Jury Prize-winning Sundance doc, Neon reunited the director with producer Becky Read and executive producer Dimitri Doganis for a panel explaining how this amazing story – of how three total strangers found out in the ‘80s, at the age of 19, that they were identical triplets, separated at birth – made it to the big screen.
The three were keen to preserve some of the film’s mysteries, since it has yet to debut theatrically in the UK, but they were happy to discuss its storied history.
As Wardle noted, it began quite unexpectedly. “I was running development at Raw,” he said. “The company I worked for made documentaries like The Imposter and American Animals, and someone brought this story in. Doing that job, you get very cynical – you see a lot of the same ideas again and again, and you get very jaded.

Raw, producer of Sundance breakout documentary Three Identical Strangers, is partnering with Film4 and Sidney Kimmel Entertainment (Ske) on a narrative feature version of the picture.
The Sundance title, about three strangers who inadvertently discover that they are identical triplets separated at birth, won the festival’s Special Jury Prize for Documentary Storytelling.
Raw, Film4 and Ske will develop the new narrative feature following what they describe as “fierce, multi-studio competitive bidding in the life rights of Robert Shafran and David Kellman,” who are two of the identical triplets at the heart of the documentary.
Raw’s Katherine Butler and Dimitri Doganis and Ske’s Sidney Kimmel and John Penotti will produce the as-yet untitled narrative feature film. Film4’s Daniel Battsek and Sam Lavender, Submarine Entertainment’s Josh Braun and Dan Braun, and the doc’s director Tim Wardle will serve as executive producers. Mark O’Connor will oversee development on behalf of Ske.

Starring in “American Animals,” the upcoming crime drama, wasn’t enough for Evan Peters — he wishes he had a credit for makeup special effects, too.

Director Bart Layton said Peters was a natural at the non-acting assignment and that everyone was impressed with his work, “including the makeup artists, who are suddenly thinking, ‘Well, I’m kind of out of a job.'”
