Sensible Soccer designer Jon Hare takes to Kickstarter with his new arcade-y football videogame, Sociable Soccer...
The good thing about Sensible Soccer, first released in 1992, was that even someone who didn't know their Arsenal from their Eintracht Braunschweig could get something out of it. It had an arcade-like pace and flow that made it accessible and fun.
If you've been pining for a return to those simpler times, there's good news: Sensible Soccer designer Jon Hare, the designer behind the original games, has just launched his Kickstarter campaign for Sociable Soccer.
Like the original series, Sociable Soccer takes a top-down, pared-back approach to what we're led to believe is called the Game of Kings. But because this is 2015, it's built in the Unity engine, so those are 3D, polygon-based footballists you can see running around and not the sprites of kickballers we used to play around with.

We delve into the first book from new publisher Read Only Memory - an exhaustive document from the UK’s Sensible Software...
If you were playing games in the 80s and 90s, it’s likely that you played something by the UK’s Sensible Software. You may have enjoyed the classic Wizball - perhaps not even realising that Sensible Software programmed it. You may remember its puckish sense of humour, as demonstrated in such games as Sim Brick, an amusing parody given away free on the cover of Amiga Power.
It’s equally likely, though, that you’ll remember Sensible Software for the string of games that really made their name in the early 90s: Mega Lo Mania, Sensible Soccer and Cannon Fodder. Although very different in terms of gameplay, each game was united by their pace and addictive qualities, their slick programming and presentation,...

There's something about ultra-violent sporting events that stirs our competitive sides, and they don't come any more brutal than Speedball 2. Debuting on the Amiga and Atari St in the early 90s, this cyberpunk sports sim ensnared fans with its hard-hitting gameplay, and still maintains a cult following today. To mark the game's 20th anniversary, license holder the Bitmap Brothers has sanctioned an iOS remake titled Speedball 2: Evolution and placed it in safe hands. Sensible Soccer designer Jon Hare is overseeing the project's development at Polish studio Vivid Games. Retro titles have enjoyed considerable success on Apple platforms and old school sensibilities are being adopted more and more in contemporary titles. Nevertheless, building a new audience around this reinvented classic is a core objective for the development team. Digital (more)...

Jon Hare has said he is looking into releasing his back catalogue on iPhone. The Sensible Software founder told BeefJack that he is "looking into" the possibility of releasing Cannon Fodder and Mega-Lo-Mania on the platform. Hare, who is currently working on original projects for iOS, Steam and PlayStation minis, said that digital distribution gives developers a fighting chance of being published. "[Digital distribution] the best opportunity there has been for a while. I think a lot of the younger developers are very lucky to be starting out now. It is the best chance they have had to make original games for 15 years," he said. "I designed or co-designed, and had (more)...
