Twenty years ago today, Quentin Tarantino and Harvey Weinstein unveiled the filmmaker’s sophomore movie — an ambitious anthology of crime stories, all interconnected and metatextualized — at a late Saturday night screening at the Cannes Film Festival. A little over three hours later, as the crowd staggered out of the Palais des Festivals, they knew they had an audience favorite on their hands. Soon, they would be able to add Palme d’Or winner, Best Picture Oscar nominee, the first indie film to break the $100 million mark, a gamechanger and a modern classic to the list.

It doesn’t seem possible that it was around 30 years ago that A Flock of Seagulls ran so far away or Modern English melted with us, but it was. The story behind those acts, their biggest hits, and dozens of other New Wave acts are captured in all their ‘80s bad hairdo-ed, brightly colored-glory in “Mad World: An Oral History of New Wave Artists And Songs That Defined The 1980s.” Written by Lori Majewski and Jonathan Bernstein, with a forward by Duran Duran’s Nick Rhodes and an afterward by Moby, the book examines the New Wave era through the filter of 36 songs associated with the time, such as Gary Numan’s “Cars,” Duran Duran’s “Girls On Film” and The Smiths’ “How Soon Is Now.” Each chapter deals with one act and, while not limited to the group’s biggest hit, explores the story behind that tune and the...

It’s not uncommon for the GTA franchise to introduce its players to a bevy of new songs they most likely would have never found out about otherwise.
As a teenager growing up in the 90’s and 2000’s, I vividly remember just falling in love with the pop 80’s soundtrack of Vice City, featuring classics such as I Ran by A Flock of Seagulls. The vast selection of radio stations and songs have been a beloved staple of the franchise, and in GTA V, it is no different.
It’s somewhat more pertinent than ever before here, as going into GTA V, there wasn’t a lot I was personally familiar with. Even the artists I recognised had songs listed I hadn’t even heard of. When the dust had settled, though, I found myself with a multitude of new songs stuck in my head, ready to toss into the ol’ iTunes library,...

A Flock Of Seagulls just had $70,000 worth of gear run (so far away) from their van in Downey, California. The gear—which the group says included at least three hand-built or customized guitars, and several hard drives containing frontman Mike Score’s new solo album—was stolen along with the band’s van, which was parked overnight outside a Comfort Inn. (Why the band didn’t take important stuff, like custom guitars or irreplaceable hard drives, inside with them is anyone’s guess.) Ktla has surveillance video of the gear being stolen by someone in a dark SUV ...

'80s band A Flock of Seagulls hit a bump in the road on their recent tour when a thief made off with what band members claim was $70,000 worth of musical equipment in a van stolen from a hotel parking lot in Downey, CA, where the band was staying.
The band had performed a show in Bellflower on Saturday (July 20) and parked the van at a Comfort Inn in Downey while on the way to play a free show in Woodland Hills on Sunday. (Clearly, the band had fallen on hard times before the theft.) Hotel surveillance video, which shows a man emerging from a nearby parked car, quickly entering the van and driving off, indicates the crime occurred at about 2 am.
"Somebody just broke into it, stole our whole van with all our equipment, clothing, band gear, cellphones, everything you need when you're on the road -- all your good stuff,...

Music was my first love. And it will be my last. Music of the future. And music of the past. Oooh, I think there’s a song in there somewhere. Although, being a bit of a pedant, how could John Miles sing about music that he Hadn’T Even heard of yet?
Electronic music was my real first love. The day that “Jack Your Body” by Steve Silk Hurley went to the tippety-top top of the pop parade was the day that music in this country changed forever. Goodbye Cliff Richard! Goodbye middle-of-the-road mawkish pap! Goodbye yellow brick road! Welcome to the future!
Ok, so I was a tad naïve. But what it did do, it made me not only search out music that I had previously dismissed when I was going through my pop phase (Haircut 100? Really, Neville), but also to listen to those records again and realise that well,...

MTV News' Gil Kaufman and James Montgomery face off over song selections for the 'Idol' top eight.

"American Idol" top eight

Last week, we tried to give the "American Idol" top nine some helpful advice with a selection of songs they should sing during Idols week. Of course, they mostly ignored us — except for our girl J.Sanch, who totally did Beyoncé and advanced — but we remain undeterred, which is why we're back this week with even more picks.
This time out, "Idol" is taking us back to the 1980s, which is great news for both Randy Jackson and Steven Tyler, but totally makes us wish Heejun Han was still around — we'd pay good money to see him do "Weird Al" Yankovic's "Living With a Hernia." But that doesn't mean there aren't plenty of great opportunities for the remaining eight.

I'm a big jazz fan, so one of the things I've been looking forward to the most about "L.A. Noire" is how they'll use the pop music of the post-wwii era in the game. Rockstar's pretty much perfected the art of assembling music that reflects the tone of the interactive work they create.
"GTA: Vice City" introduced new wave acts like The Human League and A Flock of Seagulls to a generation of gamers who were born after their music topped the charts Similarly, "Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas" packed its radio stations full of classic electrofunk, Reagan-era R&B and mid-1990s hip-hop when it hit the PS2 in 2004. The approach changed a little bit out of necessity for "Red Dead Redemption," since last year's hit Western game was set in an era before the proliferation of radio devices was widespread. So, the music in "Rdr" ranged from...

Courtney Love couldn't have come up with anything weirder.
Those of us in the throes of teen angst when Kurt Cobain shot himself in 1994 remember his death as The Defining Moment of the Era. It was The Day We Lost Our Innocence. Kurt Cobain: our flannel Kennedy.
It was probably inevitable, then, that a few art-minded representatives of this shattered generation would concoct something like the "retroactive urn for Kurt Cobain." It's both an urn and a cultural memento, the sort of thing in which "our hero re-emerges larger than life within the pantheon of dead rock stars, forever eternal," the L.A.-based designers say.
Actually, it's four separate urns, and instead of holding Cobain's ashes, the urns are the ashes; they're made from the musician's remains suspended in a substrate. (Familiar?) The weird shapes have a basis in Cobain's life and music: how he died, what his voice sounded like,...
