A bunch of sequels and a remake are vying for the Best Visual Effects Oscar this year, many of them from Disney, including Bill Condon’s live-action remake of Disney’s classic “Beauty and the Beast,” Marvel’s “Thor: Ragnarok” and Lucasfilm’s upcoming “Star Wars: The Last Jedi.”
Three Fox films offer stunning VFX: “War for the Planet of the Apes,” which advances its visual effects technology over the last Matt Reeves installment featuring Weta Digital’s astonishing array of digital apes led by performance capture master Andy Serkis as Caesar, could win Weta’s Joe Letteri (“Avatar,” “King Kong,” “The Lord of the Rings”) his fifth Oscar. Another visually sumptuous sequel is Denis Villeneuve’s “Blade Runner 2049.” And Guillermo del Toro’s “The Shape of Water” is also impressive.

Sean Penn is set to star in a space exploration series on Channel 4 called The First, from the creator of House Of Cards...
Sean Penn, the controversial, two-time-Oscar-winning actor who first achieved notable acclaim for playing one-liner-spouting stoner Jeff Spicoli, is about to do something that he’s never done in his storied acting career: headline a television series, specifically, streaming series The First for Channel 4 and Hulu.
Penn, like an increasing amount of A-list actors, will take the television plunge in this new project, which was given a straight-to-series order by the streaming outlet back in May - a space exploration-themed story set in a near-future that will follow humanity’s first mission to colonise Mars.
Interestingly, the visionary behind the series is not one typically associated with the space/sci-fi/adventure genre. Beau Willimon, who is best known as the creator, writer and...

Harriet Tubman may not end up on the $20 bill after all, if comments by Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin are any indication. The Trump appointee and former Hollywood producer told CNBC on Thursday that the Wh has “a lot more important issues to focus on” when asked about it. In 2016, the Obama administration approved a redesign of the U.S. $20 bill that would replace seventh U.S. president Andrew Jackson with the African American abolitionist and underground railroad conductor. Christopher Nolan and the Oscars have a love-hate relationship. He’s been nominated for only three Oscars, two for Original Screenplay: “Memento” in 2000 and big-scale epic “Inception” in 2010. That year, he was also nominated as a producer of “Inception,” which followed the surprising omission of “The Dark Knight” for Best Picture contention in 2009. That pushed the Academy to change its rules to allow more Best Picture slots, which might encourage more people around the world to watch the Oscars.

Well that was something, huh?
After spending weeks introducing quirky characters and setting up the war between St. Cloud's Stussy brothers, Fargo kicks off the second half of this year's run by tightening its narrative noose – and choking one of its major players to death. Tonight's episode – "The Lord of No Mercy" – continues this season's uncomfortably relevant inquiries into how our world is secretly controlled by cynics who manipulate what we believe. But this was also a refreshingly action-packed episode, with conflicts, close shaves … and one fatal shard of glass lodged in Raymond Stussy's neck.

The layman’s vision of musical theatre might mostly involve “The Lion King,” “Cats” or people in 1930’s outfits, but the reality of the genre is much darker than that. From “Porgy & Bess” and “Carousel” through to “Sweeney Todd” and “Bloody Bloody Andrew Jackson,” the form is at its best when it grapples with tougher subjects, and two new projects certainly look to do that.

President Donald Trump didn’t back away from his remarks that President Andrew Jackson could have prevented the Civil War, despite him dying 16 years before it began. Instead, Trump doubled down on the claim, saying the nation’s seventh president “saw it coming.”
“President Andrew Jackson, who died 16 years before the Civil War started, saw it coming and was angry,” the commander-in-chief declared in a tweet on Monday. “Would never have let it happen!”

Donald Trump, the man who thought being president “would be easier,” is now wondering why the Civil War couldn’t have been “worked out.”

There was so much to love and so much to hate (in the best possible way, of course) about Underground Season 2 Episode 5.
An hour that began with humor as a result of horror-stricken, hypocritical theater patrons after they realized they were being mocked by black people in whiteface, ended in unrest, uncertainty, and tragedy.
Whiteface was the name of this installment, and it came up quite often in various ways.
Cato had previously been accused of trying to blend in with the rest of society, which is predominately white, with his newfound wealth and his age-old arrogance. He has been flaunting his wealth but can't say he's the type to want to blend in with white people.

When Underground returns to Wgn America for season two on Wednesday, March 8, it’ll make history by presenting Harriet Tubman’s narrative onscreen for the first time since 1978, when Cicely Tyson played the abolitionist on the TV miniseries A Woman Called Moses. In the 39 years since, there’s been little of Tubman’s vast story -- from her escape from slavery to the Underground Railroad to her role as spy and military leader during the Civil War and, later, a suffragette -- presented, unless one counts her brief appearance on an episode of NBC's 1982 time-traveling series Voyagers! or in 2012’s Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter, which even the film’s screenwriter, Seth Grahame-Smith, admitted was “sad.”
In fact, several versions of Abraham Lincoln’s story have appeared on TV and in theaters since 1978, with Steven Spielberg’s Lincoln earning Daniel Day-Lewis the 2013 Academy Award for Best Actor for his portrayal of the president. Even [link=nm...

YouTube Kids is getting into the spirit of Women’s History Month this March by tapping former United States Treasurer Rosie Rios to create a playlist honoring notable accomplishments by women in American history.
Rios, who served as the 43rd Treasurer under President Barack Obama for eight years, and who tendered her resignation last year, is perhaps best known for fighting to feature the image of a woman on U.S. currency. (Last April, it was announced that Harriet Tubman would replace Andrew Jackson on the face of the $20 bill, while a redesigned $10 bill will feature a montage of figures involved in the women’s suffrage movement.)

If you think the Donald Trump-Hillary Clinton presidential election is the craziest race in our history, you’ll be relieved or horrified to learn that it is not… as the following examples show. The 1824 presidential election was a four-way race (are you kidding me) between members of the same party (no, seriously). Andrew Jackson won the most Electoral College and popular votes, but because no one had a plurality, the House of Representatives got to choose the president. Ridiculous. In what Jackson supporters called the “corrupt bargain,” the House chose John Quincy Adams, the first son of a president to become president.

Nintendo doesn’t have many games releasing this holiday season, as they work on making sure their next piece of hardware — the Nintendo Nx — is a success, but they are filling the gaps by smartly repackaging old software instead.
The company has announced that eight games will be joining the Nintendo Selects line (essentially their budget-priced greatest hits) later this month, and a brand new New Nintendo 3Ds bundle that launches August 26. That’s not all, though, as September will also see the release of five separate amiibo bundles.

Though, when a pandemic breaks out in Quahog, the actor must persuade the Griffins that it would be a huge mistake to listen to the anti-vaccination propaganda. “Hillary’s America,” the third documentary from author, filmmaker and convicted felon Dinesh D’Souza, begins with an undeniably fascinating premise: What if a Twitter egg made a movie? While D’Souza’s previous feature-length attacks on the Democratic Party were similarly falsified and foaming at the mouth (remember the part in 2014’s “America” when he argued that Hillary Clinton wants to use Nasa to turn the United States into her own personal panopticon of terror?), “Hillary’s America” is different — this time, it’s personal.
In January of 2014, D’Souza was indicted for violating campaign finance laws after it was discovered that he made illegal contributions to Wendy Long’s Senate bid (she wound up losing by more than 40 percentage points). He was found guilty, and accused the court of selective persecution on the basis that the Obama administration was supposedly trying to silence its dissidents.

Dinesh D’Souza‘s third documentary, “Hillary’s America,” is subtitled “The Secret History of the Democratic Party,” but the movie strains the definitions of both “secret” and “history.” In its first hour, D’Souza lays out a series of past crimes that “Democratic historians” have purportedly tried to cover up, like the Democratic party’s founding by slave-owning president Andrew Jackson — a detail so closely guarded it’s on Jackson’s Wikipedia page. In its second, having undermined Democrats’ historical claim to the moral high ground, D’Souza attempts to drag Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton into the mud,...
