Very rarely do filmmakers helm the remakes of their own films. In these cases, they are movies like 1993’s The Vanishing, in which director George Sluizer remade his original 1988 international thriller of the same name for an English-language adaptation in the United States with American stars Jeff Bridges, Kiefer Sutherland and Nancy Travis. Action legend John Woo would do the same, albeit to a smaller degree, as he remade his 1991 film, Once a Thief, into a TV movie in 1996.
The guns-a-blazing maestro is at it again. This time, with the movie that many regard as his best film, 1989’s The Killer, which starred his frequent collaborator, Chow-Yun Fat. According to World of Reel, Woo has already started production on the remake of The Killer, which will be taking place in France. The film is set to star Nathalie Emmanuel and Omar Sy. Emmanuel has had little slivers of action displayed...

The 1984 Martial Arts Epic The 8 Diagram Pole Fighter will be available on Blu-ray April 5th from Arrow Video. It can be ordered in advance Here
After one of its lead actors (cherub-faced actin icon Alexander Fu Sheng) unexpectedly died midway through production, master director Lau Kar-leung (The 36th Chamber of Shaolin) retooled his latest martial arts epic, The 8 Diagram Pole Fighter, as the ultimate action spectacular in tribute to the fallen star.
Loosely based upon the legendary Yang dynasty chronicled in Chinese folklore, the film starts as the family patriarch and all but two of his sons are brutally wiped out in a bloody battle. One surviving son (Fu Sheng) returns to his mother and two sisters, deeply traumatized; the other (Gordon Liu) escapes and joins a nearby monastery while in hiding. Once he learns his sister (Kara Hui) has been captured by their enemies,...

King Hu’s Come Drink With Me (1966) will be available on Blu-ray March 22nd from Arrow Video. It can be pre-ordered Here
Years before Shaw Brothers’ kung fu films made them the biggest film studio in Hong Kong, local audiences flocked to their wuxia pian films: mythic tales of swordfighting (and often gravity-defying) heroes fighting for honor. In his final film for the studio, Come Drink With Me, director King Hu (A Touch of Zen) broke fresh new ground in martial arts storytelling, and catapulted fresh-faced lead actress Cheng Pei-pei to stardom in the process.
When the Governor’s son is taken hostage by bandits, a mysterious swordsman named Golden Swallow (Cheng) is hot on their trail to ensure the son’s release. What the bandits don’t realize, however, is that Golden Swallow is actually a woman, and that the hostage is her brother.

International film markets represent a somewhat hidden world for those who aren't directly involved with the film industry. They are where independent producers gather to sell their films for international distribution and pitch new projects to prospective investors while distributors come shopping and festival folk prowl for the projects they will screen at their upcoming events. While there are many film markets around the world the four largest are the American Film Market in La, the European Film Market in Berlin - starting a little more than a week from now - the Marche du Films in Cannes and the Filmart in Hong Kong.Occasional Twitch contributor Frederic Ambroisine is a regular figure at the Filmart and he has just passed along a lengthy video shot...

Hong Kong based producer Bey Logan is always a prominent figure at the Hong Kong Filmart but the 2011 edition was different. Most active in previous years due to his work with UK film label Hong Kong Legends or, in more recent times, as the head of Dragon Dynasty for The Weinstein Company, Logan in 2011 was doing the rounds for the first time as a director. Logan's directorial debut feature Snowblade was just gearing up at the time and he was working the market hall with leading lady Sable Yu at his side. Twitch contributor Frederic Ambroisine caught up with Yu for a lengthy video interview shortly after the market closed and you can now watch the complete interview below. Photo by Thomas...

Designed as a sort of tribute to hard edged exploitation fare like I Spit On Your Grave, the French produced but English language feature Villa Captive represents something of a change for director Emmanuel Silvestre and star Emilie Delaunay. Because while both have been in the film industry for quite some time neither works under these names or in this type of film as a general rule. Silvestre and Delauney are both veterans of the French porn industry - Silvestre is better known as Jack Tyler, Delaunay as Liza Del Sierra - and this is Delaunay's first lead part in a non-porn film.Shot in Miami on the Canon 5D, the film recently premiered at Panic! Cinema in France and regular Twitch contributor Frederic Ambroisine...

The influence Hong Kong cinema has had on Quentin Tarantino has never been a secret. Kill Bill made the director's love affair explicit but observant fans had long since recognized the influence of Ringo Lam's City On Fire on Tarantino's Reservoir Dogs and there have been numerous other nods to films of the region in Tarantino's work. And now a French directorial duo who refer to themselves simply as Jac & Johan are tackling Tarantino's relationship with the region head on with a produced-for-French-tv documentary titled simply Tarantino: The Disciple Of Hong Kong. Occasional Twitch contributor Frederic Ambroisine worked as an associate producer on this, helping the directors line up and impressive array of interviews on the subject, talking to stars like Simon Yam and...

International box office is obviously very important to films that are made in the U.S. Many times, domestic productions only become profitable after the world has had a chance to sample the goods. It makes sense that some movie titles will be changed in order to better communicate the movie's concept; especially with so many relying on English-language idioms and slang that doesn't translate well into other languages. Two films released today in France provide good examples.
Frederic Ambroisine, filmmaker and film critic, tweeted today that Get Him to the Greek has received a limited release in Paris, retitled as American Trip, while Youth in Revolt has been changed to Be Bad!. The former sounds vanilla, though the German version, pictured above, looks better; I prefer the Spanish title, Todo Sobre Mi Desmadre, which sounds positively decadent (All About My Total Chaos?). But I like the idea of Michael Cera trying to Be Bad!

"Gallants", which opens in Hong Kong today and China tomorrow, is probably the most enjoyable kung-fu comedy made in Hong Kong since "Shaolin Soccer". First movie produced by actor Gordon Lam Ka-tung ("Infernal Affairs", "Election", "Vengeance") for Focus Films Limited (a film production, investment, acquisition, and distribution company founded in 2002 by superstar Andy Lau), "Gallants" stars veteran actors from the 70's such as Chen Kuan-tai ("Boxer From Shangtung"), Michael Chai Wai-man ("The Club"), Bruce Leung ("Kung-fu Hustle"), Teddy Robin Kwan ("Mad Mission"), Susan Shaw ("Big Bad Sis") and Lo Meng ("5 Deadly Venoms").
It also stars younger talents like Wong Yau-Nam ("Just One Look", "Ip Man"), Jj Jia ("Isabella") and the rapper Mc Jin. Third movie directed by Derek Kwok after "The Pye-Dog" and "The Moss", "Gallants" is also the first movie that he co-directed with his long-time friend Clement Cheng, who makes his director debut with "Gallants". Enjoy the first...

"Dream Home": Beneath the soft, romantic title (1) lurks what might possibly be the craziest, bloodiest slasher film ever made in Hong Kong! Produced, directed and written by the rebellious and prolific Pang Ho-cheung ("You Shoot I Shoot", "Men Suddenly In Black"), who doesn't give a damn that its sexual and violent content guarantees it won't be shown in Mainland China, "Dream Home" had an unparalleled $4 million production budget (amazing, considering the current Hong Kong cinema crisis) and is also the first movie produced and financed by 852 Films, a company co-founded by "Dream Home" lead actress Josie Ho. While involved in her role as a young, hard working woman willing to do anything to have her own apartment, Josie Ho revealed to Action Queens some exclusive information and gruesome anecdotes about her work on the movie, both in front of and behind the camera. Let the massacre begin!...

Released in France on November 25th 2009, "Une Affaire d'Etat" is a suspenseful, action-packed thriller in which three characters cross paths: a corrupt politician (André Dussolier), his henchman (Thierry Frémont), and a hard-boiled female cop (Rachida Brakni). Before you read the lead actress' interview, we'll start with the director, Eric Valette, maker of three other feature films. His first, "Maléfique", was a French production awarded by William Friedkin himself at the Gerardmer Fantastic Film Festival. The two others films were made in Hollywood: a remake of Takashi Miike's "One-Missed Call", released in the Us (unfortunately not the director's cut version) and "Hybrid" which involves a devilish car and another action queen (Shannon Beckner); there is still no release date scheduled for this film. In this exclusive interview, we focus on "Une Affaire d'Etat", Eric Valette's most personal work so far...
