Michael Urie will reprise his Off Broadway performance opposite Sutton Foster in the upcoming Broadway summer transfer of Once Upon A Mattress, the Mary Rodgers musical newly adapted by Amy Sherman-Palladino.
Urie and Foster will continue their roles when the Broadway production moves to Los Angeles’ Ahmanson Theatre in December.
As he did in the recent New York City Center’s Encores! production, Urie will play the good-hearted Prince Dauntless, who becomes smitten with the free-spirited commoner Winnifred (Foster), much to the chagrin of his not-so-nice queen mother.
Additional casting will be announced at a later date.
Directed by Lear deBessonet (Into The Woods), Once Upon A Mattress begins previews Wednesday, July 31, at Broadway’s Hudson Theatre, opening Monday, August 12, and running through November 30. The production begins its four-week L.A. engagement at Center Theatre Group’s Ahmanson Theatre on December 10, ending its run January 5.

The great Broadway Crunch of Spring 2024, when 18 new productions opened between mid-March and late April – 19 if you count the commercial transfer of Appropriate – seems to be showing early signs of the inevitable shake-out, with one show (Lempicka) closing soon and a few others already playing to houses with attendance at 80% of capacity or less.
For the week ending May 5 – the first full week after the April 30 Tony nominations announcement – while overall box office was down about 7% for all shows and attendance off about 6% from the previous week, a good number of the newcomers were filling more than 90% of their seats. Some much more.
Selling out were An Enemy of the People, which grossed $1,048,286; Cabaret at the Kit Kat Club, grossing $1,920,289 and not far off from the August Wilson Theatre’s house record set by the recent Funny Girl; and Hell’s Kitchen, $1,270,519.

Winter had a chilling effect on Broadway last week, with most shows reporting at least some downturn at the box office and overall receipts dropping nearly 10% from the previous week.
In all, box office for the 24 productions totaled $21,192,251 for the week ending February 11, with attendance of 187,573 down about 12% from the previous week.
Only a half-dozen shows bucked the downward trend, most notably Sweeney Todd, which on February 9 welcomed Aaron Tveit and Sutton Foster as the permanent replacements for Josh Groban and Annaleigh Ashford (understudies had been filling in since the originals departed January 14). Grosses for the Sondheim revival were up $402,763 for a $1,260,185 total.

Broadway said goodbye last week to two well-regarded but underperforming productions, with both Harmony and Purlie Victorious: A Non-Confederate Romp Through the Cotton Patch posting better-than-usual weekly box office as last-chancers grabbed seats.
Harmony, the Barry Manilow-Bruce Sussman musical about the real-life 1920s German singing group the Comedian Harmonists, filled a robust 99% of seats at the Ethel Barrymore Theatre, grossing $853,055 for the week ending February 4. That’s a bump of $145,978 over the previous week.
Purlie Victorious, the universally acclaimed revival of the Ossie Davis comedy starring Leslie Odom Jr. and Kara Young, grossed $706,882, a boost of $58,090 over the previous week. Still, the production filled only 81% of seats at the Music Box.
In all, the 25 Broadway productions grossed $23,493,675, a slight 5% bump over the previous week (and nearly identical to last year’s gross for the week). Total attendance was 213,281, about 2% over the previous week and 9% over last year at this time.

Broadway box office held fairly steady last week, with Sweeney Todd‘s post-Groban slide at least partially offset by gains from most other shows. In all, the 25 productions grossed $24,615,726 for the week ending January 28, about 4% greater than the previous week.
Attendance was up about 5% to 217,847.
Box office for Sweeney, which recently saw the departures of original stars Josh Groban and Annaleigh Ashford, was on the decline for the second consecutive week, down about $19,000 to $776,081. Attendance at the Lunt-Fontanne was at 90% of capacity, but a low average ticket price – $81.97 – kept total receipts modest. The trend likely will slow or stop with the February 9 arrivals of starry replacements Aaron Tveit and Sutton Foster.

There have been rumors swirling this week that Hugh Jackman and Sutton Foster have been having a secret romance, but her latest Instagram post seems to debunk those claims.
A report from In Touch claims that “their romance is an open secret on Broadway.” The report added that Hugh “has been besotted with Sutton from the moment he met her. He followed her around like a puppy!”
If you didn’t know, Hugh and Sutton worked together on the Broadway musical The Music Man. The production was set to open in 2020, but then was delayed because of the pandemic. It began performances in December 2021 and then closed in January 2023 after a massively successful run.
Keep reading to find out more…

For the second consecutive year, Broadway cast albums made a clean sweep of the Grammy nominations for Best Musical Theater Album, shutting out both the West End and Off Broadway.
Competing for the 2023 Grammy will be Kimberly Akimbo, Parade, Shucked, Some Like It Hot and Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street. Three of the five nominees are new shows, while two – Parade and Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street – are revivals.
With today’s announcement, the Grammys reprise last summer’s Tony Awards, when all five of the productions made strong showing in both nominations and wins. At the Tonys, Kimberly Akimbo won top honors for Best Musical and Best Original Score, while Parade was named Best Musical Revival – three wins that might be most relevant as a Grammy predictor.
Still, the Tonys also awarded performances from Some Like It Hot and Shucked – Kimberly Akimbo‘s Victoria Clark and Bonnie Milligan took the Actress nominations in those categories – while Parade‘s Michael Arden was honored for his direction. David Lindsay-Abaire won Best Book for Kimberly Akimbo.
Like last year, all five of the nominees are Broadway cast albums, bucking a previous nomination trend that saw strong showings from both London, Off Broadway and even a concept album from a TikTok musical (the 2022 winner The Unofficial Bridgerton Musical).
Related: 2023-24 Awards Season Calendar – Dates For Oscars, Emmys, Grammys, Tonys, Guilds & More
Even in years when the nominations are more representative of theater both Broadway and non-Broadway, the Grammy winner almost always is a Broadway cast album, Bridgerton being the notable exception. The 2023 winner was the revival of Into The Woods, which began life Off Broadway as an Encores! presentation but took the Grammy for the recording of its subsequent Broadway staging.
Also worth noting: Of the five 2024 nominees, one has already closed (the limited engagement of Parade starring Ben Platt and Micaela Diamond), two will definitely be closed by the time the winners are announced on Feb. 4; and one – Sweeney Todd – will have lost its original leads (the final performances of Josh Groban and Annaleigh Ashford are January 14; Aaron Tveit and Sutton Foster step in beginning February 9 for 12 weeks only).
The 2024 Best Musical Theater Album nominees, as listed by the Grammys, are:
Kimberly Akimbo – John Clancy, David Stone & Jeanine Tesori, producers; Jeanine Tesori, composer; David Lindsay-Abaire, lyricist (Original Broadway Cast)
Parade – Micaela Diamond, Alex Joseph Grayson, Jake Pedersen & Ben Platt, principal vocalists; Jason Robert Brown & Jeffrey Lesser, producers; Jason Robert Brown, composer & lyricist (2023 Broadway Cast)
Shucked – Brandy Clark, Jason Howland, Shane McAnally & Billy Jay Stein, producers; Brandy Clark & Shane McAnally, composers/lyricists (Original Broadway Cast)
Some Like It Hot – Christian Borle, J. Harrison Ghee, Adrianna Hicks & NaTasha Yvette Williams, principal vocalists; Mary-Mitchell Campbell, Bryan Carter, Scott M. Riesett, Charlie Rosen & Marc Shaiman, producers; Scott Wittman, lyricist; Marc Shaiman, composer & lyricist (Original Broadway Cast)
Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber Of Fleet Street – Annaleigh Ashford & Josh Groban, principal vocalists; Thomas Kail & Alex Lacamoire, producers (2023 Broadway Cast)...

There has always been a tenuous relationship between live theatre and streaming. Some old-school voices in the theatre believe that allowing people to watch stage shows from the comfort of their own homes would disincentivize them from showing up to see shows in person. More progressive voices in the community argue that by giving audiences opportunities to stay excited about theatre in between trips to see shows only makes them more and more excited to see the real thing live and in person.

The millennial women-led series is dead. Long live the millennials.
It wasn’t exactly surprising when Freeform’s beloved critically acclaimed “Single Drunk Female” was canceled this month after just two seasons and immediately pulled from Hulu. Sure, Freeform touted the sitcom as the highest-rated original comedy during the New York City Season 2 premiere before the series returned with all new episodes on Hulu in April. But its cancellation is just one of the many reminders that networks don’t invest long-term in women-fronted shows that focus on “messy” millennial women.
While we pour one out for “Single Drunk Female,” it’s best to trace the series back to its roots with Lena Dunham and executive producer Jenni Konner’s explosively disruptive HBO series “Girls,” which celebrated its 10-year anniversary in 2022. After that massive hit, why has TV abandoned the generation of people who grew up watching “Girls”?

Earlier this year, animation superstar Justin Roiland was fired by the animated Hulu series “Solar Opposites” that he co-created after he faced a series of allegations of domestic violence and disturbing workplace and online actions. Roiland denied the allegations and the domestic violence charges were later dropped.
While Roiland co-wrote the “Solar Opposites” pilot with showrunner Mike McMahan, he did not have a writing credit since, but served the very recognizable voice of Korvo, the perennially ticked-off lead character. The series announced that they would find a way forward, and, given the goofy science fiction premise of the series, they have done so in a way that is in sync with the vibe of the series.
Dan Stevens and his crisp British accent will voice the exiled, sociopathic schlorpian in the show’s fourth season, which debuts in August.

Robin Urdang is one of Hollywood's leading music supervisors, starting in the early 1990s with The Mambo Kings and working on everything from the Oscar-winning Nomadland to horror films like Suspiria and Bones and All.
She's been the music supervisor for all five seasons of The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel and won three Emmys for her work on the pilot episode "We're Going To The Catskills!" (Season 2 Episode 4) and "It's Comedy or Cabbage" (Season 3 Episode 5).
We caught up with Robin to chat about all things Maisel as she reflects on the final season and how she, along with creator Amy Sherman-Palladino and Dan Palladino, has curated the musical tapestry of one of television's most lauded comedies.
Can you break down what your job entails for those who don't know?
It varies between projects. Generally speaking, it's clearances, licensing, finding music, procuring soundtracks, finding and hiring composers.

As Carol Burnett turns 90, she bristles at the idea of looking back at her legacy. She’s not one to watch old episodes of her iconic “The Carol Burnett Show,” for example. “I’m not like Norma Desmond,” she quips, referring to the fading star in “Sunset Boulevard.” “The only time I do it is if I have to for a reason.”
In this case, NBC gave her a good one. The network is set to air “Carol Burnett: 90 Years of Laughter + Love” on April 26, and the special features both new performances and clips from Burnett’s storied career. And it gave Burnett a chance to reminisce with old friends — and new.
“It’s exactly what I wanted,” Burnett said. “I didn’t want a birthday party with cake and balloons and confetti and all of that. What I wanted was to have an entertaining show. And that’s what we got.

When “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” emerged in 2017 as a pilot for Amazon’s Prime Video, I wrote it was a look at “neurosis, nutty family dynamics, comedy laced with heartache — my new favorite show. I would binge watch the series right now — but there’s only the pilot!”
Now, as we welcome the show’s fifth and final season, which premieres Friday, April 14, I’m carrying a lot of baggage, all matched and color-coordinated.
What can you say about Rachel Brosnahan’s breakout standup Miriam “Midge” Maisel and creator Amy Sherman-Palladino? They got it right — and then some, with 20 Emmys and 66 nominations to back up their success.
