For anyone who really wanted a movie about John McAfee, the anti-virus software mogul who basically went balls to the wall crazy in Belize, I have some very good news. Someone's going to make a movie about it. The movie will be about the time Wired magazine writer Joshua Davis went to visit McAfee and McAfee was just all sorts of crazy, holed up in a compound with teenage girls in bikinis and bath salts. Lots of bath salts. And not for taking baths.
The movie is to star Johnny Depp as John McAfee, which sounds like a good fit. Most of my favorite Depp roles are him on drugs, most famously as Hunter S. Thompson in Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas. It will be directed by Glenn Ficarra and John Requa, who wrote Bad Santa and I Love You Phillip Morris, and it will be written by Scott Alexander and Larry Karaszewski,...

If you’ve read Joshua Davis’ shocking “Wired” article, “John McAfee’s Last Stand,” which chronicles the strange places anti-virus software creator John McAfee’s life has gone in recent years, then you know that he’s not the sort of person you typically envision when you think of someone who used to program for Nasa. Instead what you get is a vision of a tattooed gun nut whose recent life has involved alleged murders, isolated compounds in Belize, police conspiracies, accusations of narcotics trafficking, escapes to Guatemala, fake heart attacks, and an eventual deportation back to the United States. Sounds like an interesting story, right? The kind that could make for a good movie? Yeah, you see where this is going. Variety has learned that Warner Bros. is in final negotiations to acquire the film rights to Davis’ article, and they’ve hired the Crazy, Stupid, Love team of John Requa and Glenn Ficarra to adapt...

Warner Bros. has picked up the feature film rights to Joshua Davis’ recent Wired magazine article ‘John McAfee’s Last Stand’ setting John Requa and Glenn Ficarra to direct, script and produce via Zaftig films.
McAfee made millions as the first developer of a commercial antivirus software and then sold his software company to Intel in 2010 for $7 million and he moved to Belize.
Before he went underground, a Silicon Valley legend led a noisy and increasingly stressful life in Belize. He had been hunted by authorities for questioning about the murder of another American who lived next door to him in Orange Walk Town. He was arrested before for suspicion of unlicensed drug manufacturing (methamphetamine).
The eccentric software millionaire reportedly is back in the United States since December and seems he came to Portland to work on a graphic novel about his life with local artist and friend Chad Essley.
