Naomie Harris, Jameela Jamil, Joel Fry and Olivia Lee have joined the cast of the British romantic comedy ‘Lola and Freddie.’
Described as a reimaging of 2012’s ‘Celeste and Jesse Forever,’ the story follows a couple who were once inseparable and totally in love but now, in their 40s and having grown in different directions, are getting a divorce. Lola is thriving in her career while Freddie continues to chase his dream of becoming a screenwriter. When a big studio hires Freddie and rekindles a relationship with an old flame, he matures and aligns more with what Lola desires in their marriage.
With Freddie’s change in fortune, Lola starts to miss a life she thought she no longer wanted. With newly separate worlds colliding again, Lola and Freddie are forced to confront the uncomfortable truth that they might still be in love with each other. But a major development...

You never want bad films to happen to great actors, but every once in a while one of your favorites inevitably turns up in an unfortunate and miscalculated clunker. Sadly, Catherine Hardwicke’s “Mafia Mamma” is that movie for Toni Collette. While she is one of the most fearless and versatile actors working today, Collette looks somewhat lost here as the story’s accidental crime boss on a quest to, well, “Eat Pray F*ck” (as one character in the film so elegantly puts it).
Despite having directed a fiercely diverse slate of genre-spanning blockbusters and indies across TV and the big screen—she’s done everything from “Thirteen,” to “Twilight” and “Miss Bala”— even Hardwicke seems a little bewildered in a script jointly penned by Michael J. Feldman and Debbie Jhoon, based on an original story by Amanda Sthers.

Kathleen Turner stars in boorish tale about a wealthy old woman whose family descend to get her money when she is dying
In 2007 and 2010 British writer-director Dean Craig gave us the farce Death at a Funeral, of which I must admit I was never a fan. But there is something in the relentless bad taste in his new all-star black comedy – something in the fanatical emphasis on the importance of the exposed penis in all its unimpressive smallness – that is actually weirdly effective.
Kathleen Turner plays Hilda, a cantankerous, disagreeable and extremely wealthy old lady who is dying of cancer, and finds that her greedy and unctuous nieces and nephews all show up, hoping for a slice of the will. These are Macey (Toni Collette), Savannah (Anna Faris), Richard (David Duchovny) and Beatrice (Rosemarie DeWitt), along with Beatrice’s bewildered husband James (Ron Livingston). "Do you have any idea how draining it is to be around you all the time?!" Lionsgate has revealed an official trailer for The Honeymoon, a romantic comedy from filmmaker Dean Craig, who also made this year's The Estate. Arriving in theaters and on VOD in just a few weeks. Adam and his bride, Sarah are about to embark on the romantic honeymoon of a lifetime in Venice. But when the trip is gatecrashed by Adam's best friend, Ed, it inadvertently turns their perfect lovers' holiday into a complete disaster. They end up on the run after a strange cross border drug-dealing mission goes awry. Can they turn this honeymoon around? The comedy stars Maria Bakalova, Asim Chaudhry, Pico Alexander, Marco Valerio Montesano, Michele Enrico Montesano, and Lucas Bravo. As expected, this looks incredibly stupid. Over-the-top performances, a cheesy crime plot, not a single joke that will make anyone laugh.

‘The Estate’ Review: Toni Collette And Anna Faris Scheme In Outrageously Tasteless (But Funny) Farce
You may hate yourself in the morning, but if you are in the mood for a completely un-pc, morbidly amusing farce about the need for greed, the new comedy The Estate may be right up your alley.
Quite frankly if you know the work of its writer/director Dean Craig, the British filmmaker best known for both English and American remake versions of the over-the-top farce Death At A Funeral, as well as his directing debut Love Wedding Repeat, you will know what you are in for. Subtle comic wit and three dimensional human beings are not his specialty. Neither is restraint. The Estate, shot in New Orleans, will not disappoint, and in fact his penchant for completely politically incorrect situations and comedy is – so sue me – something of a tonic in the increasingly woke obsessed world in which we find ourselves. It has, as the ad line for the...

If The Estate is a farce, and it tries—if not hard enough—to be one, where does that leave classic examples of the form like La Cage Aux Folles, The Producers, or It’s A Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World? Well, still comfortably above The Estate. The film, directed by Death At A Funeral screenwriter Dean Craig, has a promising…...

The sweet animated opening credits sequence of Dean Craig’s “The Estate” introduces two nice sisters who run a café. It’s a classic misdirect: a warm overview of sweet, caring Macey and sharp, smart Savanna under the guidance of their father, running a neighborhood joint replete with hot coffee and cozy regulars. Once the credits fade to real life, as it were, we learn that the sisters are in over their head and way behind on their payments, with no feasible financial solution in sight.
The Macey and Savanna of the cartoon prologue do not resemble the Macey and Savanna of “The Estate.” Macey (Toni Collette) is vaguely empathetic but weak-willed. Savanna (Anna Faris) is impulsive and possibly a sociopath. In order to save their precious café, one the audience never actually sees them working in, they’re going to have to butter up their dying, miserable Aunt Hildy...

We all make mistakes, even Toni Collette. Fans of the fearless and versatile Australian actress can take solace that she isn’t alone on this one; a whole host of beloved talented people cast their lot with the same sinking ship that is the cringe comedy “The Estate.” in her final days. The most consistent comedic thread in “The Estate” involves a pushily flirtatious cousin, and it’s not nearly as fun as “House of the Dragon” made it look.
In an odd couple pairing, Collette and Anna Faris play sisters Macey and Savanna, who are struggling to keep their family business afloat. When they learn that their wealthy and childless Aunt Hilda (Kathleen Turner) has taken a turn for the worse, scheming Savanna suggests they ingratiate themselves to her in the hopes of securing their inheritance. Though kindhearted Macey has reservations at first, the threat of losing her first...

If, as the old actor’s maxim goes, dying is easy while comedy is hard, comedy about dying is the most high-wire act of all. Get the balance right and it’s intensely, savagely funny; when it doesn’t land, it’s a bit icky for all concerned. In 2007, British screenwriter Dean Craig mostly pulled off the trick with the self-explanatorily titled “Death at a Funeral,” which was broad and crass but frequently very funny indeed — sufficiently so for Craig to pen an inferior U.S. remake three years later. Now directing as well as writing, he attempts a similar coup with frantic coffin-chasing farce “The Estate,” getting ahead of the game by setting it in the States to begin with. This time, the results fall largely flat.
On the face of it, it’s hard to see why. The premise — hard-up chancers attempt to scrap and claw their way...

A total of 164 feature films will play at this year’s London Film Festival, alongside an abundance of shorts, TV series and an expanded program of Xr (extended reality) works — and that’s in a comparatively slimmed-down era of curation for a public-facing festival that has long aimed to bring the best of the global festival circuit to non-traveling cinephiles.
What has definitely grown is the Lff’s national reach: In what fest director Tricia Tuttle terms the festival’s “new normal” format after a few years of structural shifts and Covid-era adjustments, the capital-centered event will also be hosting screenings in 10 other cities around the U.K., from Manchester to Edinburgh to Belfast — sealing its status as the country’s preeminent film festival. Ditzy farce in the time of a solemn family function became a popular mainstream sub-genre with the release of "Four Weddings And A Funeral" all those decades ago. Years later, writer Dean Craig successfully tapped the formula to set up the 2007 British comedy, "Death At A Funeral", which was an instant winner. For his directorial debut "Love Wedding Repeat", Craig tries re-hauling the formula all over again.
The film is pitched as a rom-com that tries serving up random slapstick to keep moving a very basic plot. Cokehead Marc (Jack Farthing) gatecrashes into the posh wedding reception of Hayley (Eleanor Tomlinson). They have had a fling of sorts in the past, so Marc is convinced that Hailey will readily walk out of her affluent marital bliss with him. Netflix’s new film “Love Wedding Repeat” is exactly the kind of entertainment the world could use right now.
“We wanted it to be this really light, fun romantic comedy,” star Olivia Munn says on this week’s episode of the Variety and iHeart podcast “The Big Ticket.”
The wedding ensemble (available now on Netflix), directed by Dean Craig, stars Sam Claflin as the brother of the bride (Eleanor Tomlinson) who is hoping to rekindle a romance with one of his sister’s friends, played by Munn. It’s not a bad idea in these dark days to provide sheltering audiences with a light-hearted romp. In a romantic comedy, any good-looking British actor can probably coast along on his charm and accent and manners. But to do what Hugh Grant did in the ’90s — to make you believe that for all his cultivation and civilized sex appeal, he lives inside a spectacular thicket of self-doubt that’s even more enchanting than pure confidence…well, that takes a true actor, and maybe a star. And that’s the quality Sam Claflin has in the minor but captivating “Love Wedding Repeat.” He plays Jack, who spends his sister’s wedding trying to put out a dozen fires at once. To say that the character is working overtime to hold himself together would be an understatement. He’s exquisitely flummoxed.
