At the outset of “Promises,” protagonist Clémence Collombet is not an obvious fit for the talents of its leading lady. A former doctor turned mayor of an impoverished town on the outskirts of Paris, now reaching the end of her political career, she’s a decent, conscientious woman who has done a respectable job in office, but doesn’t seem blessed with great ambition or imagination.
If only because of who is playing her, however, we anticipate some additional layer of human complexity or complication to emerge in this merely respectable woman, and eventually we (and she) are rewarded. When Clémence receives an out-of-the-blue offer to become a government minister, her selfless principles are shed and her conscience suddenly plagued faster than you can say “Isabelle Huppert”; only then does writer-director Thomas Kruithof’s measured political drama begin to get going.
Even once it gets its heroine a bit dirty,...

Thomas Kruithof’s Promises (Les Promesses) tells the winding tales, or perhaps rather, the trials and tribulations of a mayor facing a political dilemma. Isabelle Huppert stars as Clémence - a valiant mayor who is reaching the end of her term in office. Kruithof’s feature is a fresh look and examination of the problems and hardships of employees within the political sector - although the political portrait fails to feature a sufficiently tangible background to support the socio-political layers in focus.
Clémence plans to stand down from politics and with no intention of standing for re-election she is in the process of preparing a young and upcoming candidate (Naidra Ayadi), and finalising her paperwork, duties, for a swift and silent exit. When it comes to light that an apartment complex is close to collapse, and an opportunity for Clémence to step up as minister arrives at her feet - she must.

Like a low-key, realistic take on Taken, the French dramatic thriller Ma Fille follows a father searching for his missing daughter during one long and despairing Paris night.
Heavy on mood and ambiance, this first feature from actress-turned-director Naidra Ayadi (Polisse) doesn’t always ratchet up the tension it should and fails to nail down its ending, though it still provides an intriguing glimpse into the world of sex workers and other marginal figures scraping by in the City of Light. After a modest release at home, the film could travel to festivals and select art-houses specializing in Francophone fare.

Girls Just Wanna Have: Achache’s Breezy Sophomore Feature
After adapting Muriel Barbery’s celebrated novel The Hedgehog for her 2009 debut, director Mona Achache returns with her latest feature, Gazelles, based on the successful one woman show “Camille Attaque” of its star Camille Chamoux. Fans of her fantastic first outing may be a bit disappointed by the slightness of her latest, which feels akin to English language female buddy comedies, but happens to be a bit more refreshing due to its realistic female characters. Given its familiar scenario, Achache and Chamoux manage an energetic rendition of heterosexual female thirtysomethings finding empowerment as they overcome the building ennui of pre-mid-life crises brought on by refusing to accept standards they’ve had no say in creating. But even with its frank, sexual embrace in tow, there is a constant itchy niggle shadowing every scene because that fact of the matter is, we...

The Summer 2012 Movie Season is here with Marvel's The Avengers getting things off to a good start and considering I've already seen that movie, and reviewed it (read that here), I decided I would leave it off this list. So, I guess, this is my Top 15 Most Anticipated Summer 2012 Movies... excluding The Avengers. However, along with The Avengers, there are three other films I've already seen and reviewed that are also hitting theaters this summer that I thought I would mention before we get started. The Avengers (May 4) Should You See It? Yes! What's It About: Superheroes teaming up to defeat an alien god flanked by an alien army that really likes blowing up cars. Review Quote: "When it comes to grandiose summer blockbuster spectacle this is the kind of movie you want to see." (Read the full review here) Polisse (May 18) Should You See It? Definitely! What's It About:...

It would have been better to get this trailer out there early yesterday, with all the talk of the Cannes Film Festival, but now I guess will have to do as Sundance Selects has released the official trailer for last year's Jury Prize winner at the Cannes Film Festival, Polisse, written and directed by someone you are probably more familiar with as the Diva Plavalaguna in The Fifth Element, Maiwenn Le Besco. I saw and reviewed the film at last year's fest and really enjoyed it and was then surprised to hear from so many others that they weren't as taken with it as I was. It's a fast-paced look at the French police's Child Protective Unit and as I noted in my review, it "plays like a documentary, or a hard-hitting two hour premiere to a new cable police procedural, which we all now know is in no way an insult.

Maiwenn starred as the blue alien opera singer Diva Plavalaguna in The Fifth Element. She has since gone on to become a writer, actor and director, most recently winning the Jury Prize at last year's Cannes Film Festival for Polisse, which then went on to be nominated for 13 Cesar Awards, which tied for the most nominations ever. It would eventually win only two for best female newcomer (Naidra Ayadi) and editing. Polisse hits theaters domestically on May 18, and you can read my Cannes review here. I only thought I'd mention all of that as I present a green screen look at Maiwenn's full diva performance, which wasn't used in its entirety in the film.

Karin Viard, Joey Starr and Marina Fois in Polisse Polisse is a fast-paced, tragic, touching, emotional and occasionally hilarious look at the French police's Child Protective Unit (Cpu). It plays like a documentary, or a hard-hitting two hour premiere to a new cable police procedural, which we all now know is in no way an insult.
Co-writer and director Maiwenn Le Besco has crafted a story focused on the Cpu with a dedication to realism as it places the daily life of ten Cpu agents under the microscope. Trouble at home, trouble with co-workers and all their joys, disappointments and successes are on display. With each new scene comes a new emotion. Polisse is so tightly edited you're barely given a moment to breathe as it moves from one story to the next and by the time it's over you'll be surprised two hours has already gone by.
