The Grinch tells the story of a cynical grump who goes on a mission to steal Christmas, only to have his heart changed by a young girl’s generous holiday spirit. Funny, heartwarming, and visually stunning, it’s a universal story about the spirit of Christmas and the indomitable power of optimism. Academy Award® nominee Benedict Cumberbatch lends his voice to the infamous Grinch, who lives a solitary life inside a cave on Mt. Crumpet with only his loyal dog, Max, for company. With a cave rigged with inventions and contraptions for his day-to-day needs, the Grinch only sees his neighbors in Whoville when he runs out of food. Each year at Christmas they disrupt his tranquil solitude with their increasingly bigger,...

The Christmas Chronicles
Stars: Kurt Russell, Darby Camp, Judah Lewis, Oliver Hudson, Kimberly Williams-Paisley, Debra Wilson, Kari Wahlgren, Andrew Morgado, Debi Derryberry, Michael Yurchak, Jessica Lowe | Written by Matt Lieberman | Directed by Clay Kaytis
The story of sister and brother, Kate and Teddy Pierce, whose Christmas Eve plan to catch Santa Claus on camera turns into an unexpected journey that most kids could only dream about.
Netflix’s The Christmas Chronicles has only one factor that kept it out of the clutches of a dollar bin – the absurdly affectionate performance of Kurt Russell as Santa Claus. A role in which he revels in with humorous and lively exploits. The rest is your standard merit of a traditional direct-to-video treatment that has moments of entertainment but stagnates in saturated genre convention. Russell steals the show undoubtedly. His charisma and charm is the lifeblood of the picture. A wonderfully exuberant and joyous role is clearly on display,...

His heart may be small, but that doesn’t mean his box office returns will be.

Holiday season has already started for “The Grinch” as it heads for a merry $61 million opening weekend at 4,140 North American locations, early estimates showed Friday.
Universal-Illumination’s animated comedy is performing right in line with forecasts of between $55 million and $65 million this weekend. Fox’s second weekend of “Bohemian Rhapsody” should lead the rest of the pack with about $28 million. Newcomers “The Girl in the Spider’s Web” and World War II horror tale “Overlord” should take in about $9 million each and will probably finish behind the second weekend of Disney’s “Nutcracker and the Four Realms” for third place.

Chicago – They should have left well enough alone, didn’t anybody learn anything from the trainwreck of the Jim Carrey live-action-as-The-Grinch? Apparently not. A more kid friendly and modern animated version of “The Grinch” opens six weeks before Christmas, and already I want to return it.

It’s isn’t bad bad, it’s just ho-hum and lazy storytelling. It starts with the inevitable, and by this time bordering-on-satire hip hop version of “You’re a Mean One, Mr. Grinch” by Tyler the Creator… because we all know that the kiddie target audience need hip hop 24/7. And then we hear the voice of new Grinch, and it sounds exactly like a Brit doing an American accent (stretch out those vowels!). It would have been much cooler if Benedict Cumberbatch has just done his natural voice. Oh well. At least it had a decent emotional connection at the end, but...

Older children are apt to be skeptical. And anyone past voting age may need to be seriously stoned to swallow it. Don’t get me wrong: It’s not that the story can’t be done right outside of the classic 1957 Seuss book. The gold standard remains the wickedly whimsical 1966 TV version from director Chuck Jones, with an unapologetically nasty Boris Karloff voicing the mean, green Xmas-hating machine. And the latest Grinch is nowhere near as insufferable as Ron Howard’s 2000 live-action How the Grinch Stole Christmas with Jim Carrey...

Illumination and Benedict Cumberbatch deliver a surprisingly complex (and timely) new take on Dr. Seuss’ The Grinch.
If it’s true that the Christmas holiday season is continuing its march toward calendar domination, then it’s also true that the number of Christmas movies made each year is also increasing. The cable network Lifetime is especially guilty of the latter, as this year’s slate of Lifetime Original television films currently rests at a whopping 23 titles, never mind Netflix dipping its toes into the Yuletide weather. But then there’s, always, The Grinch.
Thus enters the third adaptation of the Dr. Seuss classic How the Grinch Stole Christmas! since its publication in 1957. The first was the 1966 animated television special narrated by Boris Karloff while the second was the 2000 live-action film directed by Ron Howard and starring Jim Carrey in the title role. Now, these two forms have merged into a...

While researching the history of Christmas movies, I watched 22 different adaptations of “A Christmas Carol,” and even that felt like just scratching the surface. So if Ebenezer Scrooge can be subject to myriad interpretations — even when some fans are convinced that one version or other is the “definitive” one — why shouldn’t the Grinch?
That’s an easier argument to make now that we have “Dr. Seuss’ The Grinch” as an example of how to revisit the material, particularly since the 2000 live-action take was such a grim and overblown piece of Yule-sploitation. That version no doubt led many to dread this latest one, from “Minions”-makers Illumination Entertainment, but this new animated feature is bright, both in its color palette and in the wit and liveliness of the storytelling.

Exclusive: Pharrell Williams, whose Oscar-nominated song “Happy” helped turn Despicable Me 2 into a monster hit in 2013, has rejoined with Illumination and Universal Pictures. Williams has come aboard to be the narrator of the animated The Grinch. Grammy nominee Tyler, the Creator has written an original song — “I Am The Grinch” — and will perform it for the film. Oscar-nominated composer Danny Elfman has written the film’s score, and Tyler, the Creator and Elfman collaborated on a re-imagined version of the classic Grinch theme “You’re A Mean One.”

Chicago – “Keeping Up With The Joneses” illustrates how hard it really is to make a funny action comedy. After watching this, I have begun to think that the ones that work are something of anomaly – more often than not they’re like this. An amiable but aimless project that can’t quite grasp what it wants to be and doesn’t have the vision or the laughs to sustain itself.
Rating: 2.0/5.0
The film’s inspirations begin and sadly end with the casting. I have no problem with Zach Galifianakis and Isla Fisher as a domesticated suburban couple who have settled into boring routine. With the kids away at summer camp, they finally have some time to themselves. But all visions of out of control lovemaking are dismissed in a single montage by fears and worry. So they settle in to watch the Good Wife instead, but they’re intrigued and...

Mash together True Lies and Mr. & Mrs. Smith. Remove all the wit and all the sexy charm. Get rid of the action thrills. Eliminate all satirical metaphoric commentary on marriage and suburban living. And then have your head examined: Who on Earth could possibly think this was the recipe for a movie that anyone would want to see? And yet here we have Keeping Up with the Joneses, which appears to have been created to precisely this plan.
Nothing is funny here. Nothing. It’s so perfectly unfunny that it almost seems deliberate.

We have to handle Keeping Up With The Joneses carefully, because it's something of an antique. Except for a couple of jokes about waterboarding and Siri, we're convinced that the script must have been hanging around since at least 1986. This film looks as if someone walked into an office at Fox and pitched 'The Burbs meets The In-Laws' a long time ago and they literally never looked back.
At the start of the film, Jeff Gaffney (Zach Galifianakis) and his wife Karen (Isla Fisher) fretfully send their two kids off to summer camp.

Light on big laughs, entirely predictable and almost completely forgotten five minutes after you leave the theater, Keeping Up With The Joneses can’t really keep up with much of anything that matters. Of course, a rather dumb comedy like this will inevitably hit its marks every now and then, and most of that is thanks to a game cast who do their best with slight material written by Michael LeSieur and directed by Greg Mottola, who in the past has done much better movies…...

How’d that beloved tune from the “pre-fab four” go? “Another Pleasant Valley Sunday, here in status-symbol land”. Well, they might’ve been crooning about the locale of this new comedy. Everybody’s lawn is perfect, right out of American Beauty. Maybe even “picture perfect”, but more than a bit dull. Some of the residents perhaps secretly hope that things will get shaken up a tad. Ah, be careful what you wish for, so goes the old saying. That’s what happened in the final John Belushi/Dan Aykroyd team-up in 1981, Neighbors. But instead of that off-kilter, way-too friendly couple, the new arrivals bore more than a passing resemblance to Mr. & Mrs. Smith (not the Hitchcock comedy, but the first pairing of Pitt and Jolie). That’s the premise, as two “normals” risk life and limb when they’re Keeping Up With The Joneses.

There’s more lingerie than laughs in this dull meet-the-sexy-superspy-neighbours actioner
The umpteenth runout for the old suburban-squares-versus-sexy-superspies plot unfolds in predictable fashion. Isla Fisher and a newly svelte Zach Galifianakis commence curtain-twitching with the arrival of glam neighbours Jon Hamm and Gal Gadot. Covers are blown in modestly budgeted action setpieces; everyone exits feeling shortchanged in the laughter department. The shopworn conceit begs lampooning, yet director Greg Mottola – seeking a return to the studios’ better graces seven years on from Adventureland – plays matters blandly straight. The leads huff and puff accordingly, but Michael LeSieur’s dull-edged script squanders their timing, more concerned with reducing the actresses to their lingerie than with raising anything other than the occasional snicker.

The most surprising thing about “Keeping Up with the Joneses” isn’t that it’s actually funny, but that some touching unlikely friendships emerge amidst the outrageous action sequences. Jeff Gaffney (Zach Galifianakis) is a lovably dull suburban husband, who dotes on his wife, Karen (Isla Fisher), and enjoys a simple life in his beloved cul-de-sac. With the kids off at summer camp, the Gaffneys have time on their hands to wring their hands over the mysterious new couple that moves into the neighborhood, making an all-cash offer on the house across the street.
Tim and Natalie Jones (Jon Hamm and Gal Gadot) are gorgeous, worldly and very much in love. Naturally, everyone in the cul-de-sac hates them. Except affable Jeff, who quickly develops a “man-crush” on Tim (in the words of the movie). But Natalie’s perfect potluck dishes and Tim’s glass-blowing hobby are not fooling Karen, whose...

Keeping Up With The Joneses is your garden-variety suburban spy comedy, and while that might not sound “garden-variety,” try acting surprised even once during Greg Mottola’s new comedy. Admittedly, it’s not the most humorless cul-de-sac thriller (without the thrills), it’s just incredibly unmemorable like so many mainstream jokers of late. It’s not as destructively devious as Mr. And Mrs. Smith, nor is it witty enough to exploit squeaky-clean parents who turn into unexpected secret agents. A nice guy plays overly nice, his nosy wife snoops excessively and the new perfect neighbors turn out to be exactly who they aren’t – so, again, it’s just like almost every other espionage comedy you’ve ever seen.

Greg Mottola has made some fine contributions to big-screen comedy — including sweet-and-salty teen flicks Adventureland and Superbad — but his new film, Keeping Up With the Joneses, is decidedly not one of them. Stale as week-old bread and every bit as bland, the movie saddles a strong cast with a groaningly ineffectual script (courtesy of Michael LeSieur, who wrote 2006’s You, Me and Dupree) and wastes the director’s gift for bringing lived-in charm and feeling to broad comic premises. It’s been obvious for a while now, but bears repeating: At a time when we’re

Universal Pictures and Illumination Entertainment's planned CG animated feature based on Dr. Seuss' "How the Grinch Stole Christmas" has been significantly delayed.
The project, originally slated for a November 10th 2017 release, has been pushed back a full year to November 9th 2018.
Benedict Cumberbatch voices the title role in the newly-imagined version of the enduring holiday classic. Pete Candeland and Yarrow Cheney helm the new take which Michael LeSieur is penning the adaptation of.
The only film now occupying that November 2017 release slot is Francis Lawrence's "Red Sparrow" for 20th Century Fox.

All of Whoville will have to wait till 2018 to see the remake of the Dr. Seuss classic...
Universal has just announced that the animated remake of The Grinch Who Stole Christmas, in which it has partnered with Illumination Entertainment, has been delayed by a year. It was originally set to release on November 10th 2017, but has been shunted back to November 9th 2018. No reason has been given, but we'd wager it just wouldn't be ready in time.
Benedict Cumberbatch, who showed us just how irredeemably evil he can sound as the voice of Smaug in The Hobbit trilogy, will voice the eponymous green grouch who is bent on making Christmas vanish by stealing every last candy cane. Pete Candeland and Yarrow Cheney will co-direct, with Michael LeSieur adapting the screenplay, Audrey Geisel (the wife of the late Dr Seuss) and Chris Renaud executive producing, and Chris Meledandri,...

Benedict Cumberbatch and his silky, sinister voice born for "it was a dark and stormy night..." tales (and greedy dragons) is now going to voice the Grinch.
Illumination, the studio that made "Despicable Me" and "Minions," made the announcement at CinemaCon. Cumberbatch will voice the Dr. Seuss character in a movie simply titled "The Grinch." (Sorry, Cindy Lou Who, you'll have to wait for your own standalone movie.) Why Cumby? Well, it's probably obvious, but producer Chris Meledandri said he has a voice that exudes "comedic wickedness while embodying vulnerability."
It sounds like it's early days for "The Grinch," but it will be adapted for the screen by writer Michael LeSieur and directed by Pete Candeland and Yarrow Cheney. According to Entertainment Weekly, the current release date is November 10, 2017.
You'll remember that the Grinch of the 1966 Chuck Jones animated TV short "Dr. Seuss' How the Grinch Stole Christmas!" was voiced by Boris Karloff,...

With Jon Hamm, Zach Galifianakis and Isla Fisher all aboard, he wants to add Gal Gadot to the list.Mottola's film, written by Michael LeSieur, finds a settled yet bored couple discovering that their new suburban neighbours might be more than they appear on first glimpse. Could they be criminals? Or spies? Or both? Or neither? Or something else entirely? Are we trapped asking questions at this point? Possibly? Not much is known about the roles the various actors will play yet, though we’re guessing at Galifianakis and Fisher as the first couple, with Hamm and Gadot as the second. That, of course, assumes that Gadot’s talks work out – she’s got a busy schedule with her Wonder Woman duties and other films,...
