Jack Kilmer has nabbed a leading role opposite Clifton Powell in B.B. King drama “The Thrill Is On,” Variety has learned exclusively.
Kilmer will play Michael, a young drummer who has a chance encounter with blues legend King (Powell), which proves to be the start of an enduring friendship. The upcoming film is based on the true story of producer Michael Zanetis’ own experience with the prolific musician, who died in 2015.
“As an actor and musician, Jack is uniquely qualified to portray our drummer on a mission. His passion for acting and music will ignite a compelling performance,” Zanetis said in a statement to Variety. “We can’t wait to see what magic this dynamic duo will bring to our film!”
Kilmer first broke out in 2013 with his starring role in Gia Coppola’s “Palo Alto,” and has since appeared in “The Stanford Prison Experiment,” “Lords of Chaos” and “Hala.

Gearing up for the release of Tea for the Tillerman² on September 18th — his rerecorded version of his 1970 album — Yusuf/Cat Stevens unveiled a video for “On the Road to Find Out.”
“On the Road to Find Out” was inspired by Yusuf’s battle with tuberculosis in the late Sixties. He filled his time recovering with meditating and reading, most notably Paul Brunton’s The Secret Path. The original version is a buoyant song about renewal and self-discovery. “Well sometimes you have to moan/When nothing seems to suit you,...

This history of America is littered with real stories begging to be told about real people.
Next up: Legendary bluesman B.B. King.
"Treme" star Wendell Pierce is set to take on the big star in "B.B. King & I," based on the true story about a drummer who attends a concert by the legendary bluesman and the pair end up becoming lifelong friends.
"Almost Famous" star Patrick Fugit will be picking up the drumsticks.
According to Variety, production is set to begin Sept. 1, with a projected Spring 2012 release. The script was written by Michael Zanetis (the basis for Fugit's character) and Melora Donoghue, and Michael Schroeder (Christopher Plummer's "Man in the Chair") has signed on to direct.
We're pretty psyched to see B.B. King getting his cinematic due and even more psyched that TV's "Bunk" is playing him. We're huge fans of "The Wire" (who isn't?). Plus, his character on "Treme,...

Elle Fanning certainly looks to be going “Somewhere.”
Miss Fanning will be following up her impressive turn as a movie star’s daughter in Sofia Coppola’s quietly scathing look at celebrity with “Pure Life,” an indie drama set to go in front of cameras this spring.
“Pure Life” sees Fanning as a teenager obsessed with the kind of “perfect” romances depicted in the old Brat Pack movies, according to The Playlist. Her desire for such a romance leads her to a bad boy she deems worthy of taking her virginity.
We have a feeling things won’t quite work out the way they do in the movies.
Vera Farmiga will once again play a woman about half a bad day from a complete nervous breakdown as Fanning’s hard-working, short-tempered single mom. Omari Hardwick (“Kick-Ass,” “The A-Team”) has also joined the cast.
