ABC was in comedy mode Tuesday, picking up five half-hour pilots: "The Call", "Sam I Am", "Carpoolers", "Family of the Year" and "The Middle".
Fox also gave the green light to a comedy project, Victor Fresco's "Deeply Irresponsible".
"Call", from 20th Century Fox TV and Real Time Prods., is a single-camera comedy about a team of gifted yet unconventional Los Angeles paramedics who save people's lives while screwing up one another's -- all in real time.
"Kitchen Confidential" creator Dave Hemingson penned the script and is executive producing the pilot with Real Time's Joel Surnow, Bob Cochran and Howard Gordon. The project was picked up by ABC in November with an episodic commitment.
"Sam" (previously "The Memory Trace"), from Touchstone TV and studio-based Brillstein Grey Entertainment, is a single-camera comedy about a woman who wakes up from a coma with amnesia and has to rediscover her life, her relationships and herself.
Best-selling Irish novelist Cecelia Ahern and Don Todd (ABC's pilot "Girls on a Bus") conceived the story for the pilot, which was written by Todd.

Three drama projects have received pilot orders.
ABC has given the green light to a corporate soap from Reunion co-creator Jon Feldman, while Fox has picked up a cop show from writer-producers Allan Loeb and Christian Taylor and a thriller from "24" creator Bob Cochran and writer David Ehrman.
The untitled Jon Feldman project, from Warner Bros. TV, revolves around four dysfunctional but lovable CEOs. The project, which Feldman wrote and will executive produce, originally was given a put pilot commitment (HR 8/24).
The Loeb/Taylor project, tentatively titled New Amsterdam, hails from Regency TV. It centers on a man cursed with immortality who works as a homicide detective in New York.
Feature writer-producer Loeb and Taylor (ABC's Miracles) penned the script for the project and are executive producing the pilot with Loeb's producing partner Steven Pearl. The project originally was picked up by Fox with a script commitment plus penalty (HR 11/6).
The untitled NSA project, written by Cochran and Ehrman, centers on an everyday family man -- a midlevel employee at a Lockheed Martin-type company -- who finds himself caught up against his will in the world of espionage when he is recruited by the National Security Agency to spy on his boss.

Lifetime has greenlighted two one-hour pilots, The Madness of Ava and The Virgin of Akron, Ohio and has tapped Ever Carradine for the title role in Madness.
Madness, from veteran comedy writer Rob LaZebnik and 24 executive producers Howard Gordon, Joel Surnow and Bob Cochran, is described as a female-lead House. It centers on a brilliant neurologist (Carradine) who is diagnosed with bi-polar disorder and how that impacts her life and her family. Fox 21 is producing the project, which is based on the true story of a doctor at Massachusetts General Hospital.
Madness was written on spec and sent to Lifetime's entertainment president Susanne Daniels and senior vp series development Maria Grasso.
"We loved it," Daniels said. "We thought it was smart and warm and funny and interesting."
Tucker Gates is set to direct the pilot, which is slated to begin production in Vancouver early next year.
Virgin, from Fox TV Studios, centers on a young woman in Manhattan who, after a stint in rehab, is sent back to her Ohio town to do community service and live with her dysfunctional family.

Fox's 24 and NBC's The Office were both close to cancellation after their first seasons, but on Sunday night each walked away with the top award in their category. After waiting out shaky Nielsen starts, the networks stuck with the shows, and Sunday 24 went home with the best drama series and best actor in a drama series Emmys, while The Office was named best comedy series. 24 executive producer Howard Gordon noted in his onstage remarks the show's unsteady beginnings in terms of viewership. "I want to thank Bob Cochran and Joel Surnow for creating a show that most people didn't think would last for one year, let alone six. But here we are," he said. In addition to its accolades and making it to a sixth season, which premieres in January, 24 has become so successful that there is a feature film version in the works, which co-creator/executive producer Robert Cochran noted backstage could be set in Afghanistan or Washington.
